X3TC please explain ship upgrade pricing

Post by XIndy2 »

I've read wikis and tried searching this site but I can't find an explanation of what "Step 1" means in the buy bar when I'm buying ship upgrades like Engine Tuning or cargo extensions.

When I start loading the buy bar with the upgrade the label on the bar starts at "Step 1" then jumps erratically to "Step 2" or "Step 5", "Step 10" etc. If I decrease the buy amount sometimes it goes back steps but not at the same rate it increased.

I can't find any docs on what these "Steps" mean. Also in the buy menu for the upgrades I really can't tell how much improvement I'm getting for my money. Is there a wiki or formula which will tell me how much speed or cargo increase I get for each unit of upgrade I buy?

Thanks
Clark

The "Step X" that you're seeing is just an indicator of how much hitting the left or right arrows will increase/decrease the counter in the bar. For example, say you want to buy 1000 energy cells. You could hit the right arrow 999 times, or hold it down and have it first increase 1 by 1 (Step 1), then by 5s (Step 5), then 10s (Step 10), and so on. You can also type a number here to change the step size manually - for example, you could type "1000" to change it to "Step 1000", then hit the right arrow once to advance by 1000.

As far as ship upgrades go...for engine and rudder, they're pretty much the difference between the base and max values for the particular ship. For example (totally made up values), say you're upgrading a ship with a base speed of 150m/s and a maximum speed of 250m/s. Visiting an equipment dock, you see there are 10 engine upgrades available (numbers made up for easy math). Each upgrade will increase your max speed by (250 - 150) / 10, or 10m/s. Cargo upgrades are usually (IIRC) just a straight one point of cargo capacity per point of upgrade.

Just to correct Khanaset there, an engine or rudder upgrade will always increase it by 10% of the base--so in his example of a ship with a base speed of 150m/s, each engine tuning will add 15m/s to the top speed. Thus, the closest you could get to his scenario would be a ship with a base speed of 150m/s and a maximum of 7 engine tunings available--fully tuned, this ship would do 150 + (7x15) = 255m/s.

"upgrade pricing"

Each of the three tuning types has same linear pricing model, but different values. The first unit of tuning has fixed price, e.g. 10cr. The "one after last buyable" (aka N+1) unit has fixed price too, e.g. 1000cr. Every unit is more expensive than previous and the price increases linearly.

Each ship has fixed amount of tunings that it can buy. Thus, roughly guessing:
* If a ship can buy at most 2 units, first would cost 10cr and second 505cr. The third that you can never buy would then be 1000cr. Total of 515cr.
* If a ship can buy at most 4 units, the pricest would be 10cr, 257cr, 505cr, and 752cr, respectively. Total of 1525cr.

However, you don't usually buy just one unit. Price for transaction is naturally the running sum of the prices of the units that you do buy. Therefore, buying one at a time should result in same total cost as buying all at once, but rounding might occur.

Ah, thanks for the correction - that's what I get for using totally made-up numbers instead of actual in-game values
