Crashes, invisible stations and disappearing interface - Various system issues.

So I'm playing Albion Prelude, v2.5.1. The only modification from vanilla is the bonus pack. I've used the steam verify on both the TC and AP parts of the game, aswell as attempted changes to graphics including reducing all to minimum.

As for the actual problem; the game ran fine at full graphics when I first started playing. As I started building stations and complexes fps began to drop, as was not a surprise nor that bad of a problem.
Then I began getting graphical problems such as stations and ships becoming partially invisible (only docking clamps/engines remaining visible). Often this is accompanied by background planet graphics turning to a plain glowing color rather than the usual planet graphics. This problem is often triggered when I enter a menu, change camera view, enter station placement screens, when a station is built, or when a large ship enters the sector I am in, or when I enter a sector with a large complex in it.

The game tends to freeze for just a second when this glitch begins. It persists until I both leave all sectors where glitching ships/stations are present, aswell as reload the game.

It usually only affects stations and larger ships, generally only capital ships. The glitch is also usually only triggered in sectors with alot of stations in it, such as a complex sector, and is more common the more intricately populated the sector is.

I also often run into the interface disappearing, usually only for a second. This was not a problem until recently, when the interface ceased to reload after this. At first Alt+tabbing and reopening the game would cause the interface to return, but this seems to have stopped working. This problem began to surface while I was building a complex in Spires of Elusion, becoming unplayable around when the complex reached a size of ~70 stations.

I first tried reducing traffic in the sector (which was enormous at the time) by removing it from the gate hub, but this did not help, even after the population of ships in the sector fell to 1/3 of previous traffic levels.

In fact, the problem seemed to get worse, as my game now crashes everytime I try to enter the sector (Spires of Elusion, that is).

The game simply freezes at the black loading screen during the jump, exists to desktop, with a simple message saying, "Out of memory, more information can be found in the manual".

I thought my computer was up to the task though, and the game still works fine outside of this sector. Indeed, it manages to enter sectors with 90+ station complexes in it. (Altough not without problems, it doesn't crash, and the interface only disappears temporarily.)

I'm thinking of simply getting a new computer, as it seems about time, but I thought I'd ask about this to see if I can learn what to prioritize in a new computer or if I did something to mess up my current one. I would like if I could fix the current one though, just to be clear.

Your other problem is that with a 32 bit OS and a powerful graphics card with 1 Gb of VRAM addresses plus lots of RAM used as shared graphics memory, you will not be leaving that much RAM for use by the game exe itself. Hence the out of memory messages. A 64 bit OS would have given you much more memory availability from the 4 Gb fitted RAM.

What you must do is make sure that you have unfragmented space for the use of pagefile on your harddrive as you will be using it a lot (which is probably what those short pauses in game are while you access the harddrive).

One other possible tip is that if you keep your play sessions shorter and close the game after saving every so often, you will empty the game cache and probably see better fps and less pauses for a while when you start the game again.

Thank you. I always have been horrible at keeping track of drivers.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to help. Both lagging, glitchy interface and stations are still there.

As for the 32 bit OS, I'm not sure what I can do about that but to get a 64 bit if and when I get a new computer.

I've already kept a lot of open harddrive space, and I do defrag.

And while I do notice these problems get worse and more likely the longer I play, right now the problems begin the moment the game opens.

Something to try regarding the pauses that is not usually recommended for general use. It will not help your fps or memory issues though.

Go into Control Panel, System and Maintenance, System, Advanced System Settings, Advanced, Performance, Advanced, Virtual Memory (or a similar route depending on your View options).

Here you can fix the size of your pagefile using the change key. Change it from system-managed to both Initial and Max sizes of the same value of 6 Gb. By being forced to a fixed reserved space rather than being dynamic, the game does not have to keep resizing, rewriting and even defragging the pagefile during play. The X3 engine is not a good manager of dynamic pagefile and keeps asking for just a little bit more.

After a reboot, see if that helps perfomance in-game regarding pauses. If not, or it makes things worse, you can always put it back to system-managed.

OP, you can improve performance by adding an additional 1GB of RAM (if I read your dxdiag correctly you have 3GB installed). Best to add RAM in pairs, ie. 2x2GB, rather than 4x1GB. However, the latter would still be better than what you currently have.

You can also increase performance by installing an older video card, say a nvidia 6800GT, 7800GT, 8800GT(s), 9800GT with 256-512MB of RAM. These cards can be had cheap. Do stay away from any of the lower end cards, however. I played X3 for years with a 6600GT and a Pentium 4 and played it well.

If the memory issue outweighs the graphics quality in his mind then that could be a way to go. The shame is that a 64 bit OS would have avoided this issue and made use of that good if elderly card he has (I have one too with Vista x64), but too late now for that system unless he wants to upgrade it to Win7 x64.

Alan, Ive never seen dxdiag report anything other than Installed RAM. I believe the 3GB to be the correct number.

Also as far as shared memory is concerned, disable any onboard video, and lower the aperture size, also known as VGA Frame Buffer, in CMOS/BIOS settings to as low as possible. This will disable shared memory. Windows uses this memory to cache large textures, I don't know enough about X3 to address whether any of the textures are large, though I suspect not (the game engine is OLD and designed for 256MB video cards).

Your suggestion of changing the pagefile size had a surprising effect.
While I still suffered invisible stations and low framerate, the interface remained stable throughout several minutes of testing. (It always starts acting up once stations go invisible.)

What's more surprising is that I was able to enter Spires of Elusion, even though my game had crashed everytime I attempted this before.

As for changing video card/RAM; since I already figured out 32 bit won't do it for me, I'll probably go for a new computer rather than start modifying this one.

If I do get a new computer with 64bit OS, should I try to get more than 4GB RAM? Or would my problems be solved at 64bit 4GB RAM?

Best off with 6GB or more. That way X will get almost all of the 4GB allowed for a 32bit application.

@ OP: 4 Gb with OS x64 is sufficient for X3 but if you want to be ready for more demanding games and applications then 8 Gb might be better. RAM is relatively cheap compared to other hardware anyway.
