Nice, keep me in touch if they answer.

I don't care if that's a low-res shot, it looks sexy. I just love what they're doing with particle effects in Rebirth. It's now my new screen saver. :)

Although I am excited about the screenshot, and this game... Why does it look so smudgy? Like concept art... everything is blurred together like a painting. So it gives it a cartoon look.

its blurry as a screen shot from a test video. even if you pause the video and then screenshot it, depending on the frame rate etc would be difficult to capture a clear picture.

I don't understand why people are complaining about low res / cartoony pics, this is not a way to encourage them to post more at whatever frequency if all you do is complain.

The easiest way to think of it is, when its loaded on your pc playing on your monitor it will look a whole lot better and clearer like games always do.

Sorry I had to lol at that... so you are saying they are adding motion blur to the game? Or is it out of focus? This is computer generated... your idea would be true in the real world though.

I think this is the real deal (it said test video not tech demo). And nothing about this image strikes me as "cartoony" or "concept art". When I first saw this image I was blown-away by such realistic graphics! The one thing I can agree with though is that the image does look a bit blurry, (no doubt the test video had a low res). But the graphics increase is superb, and I even have it now as the background image on my desktop so thanks EGOSOFT!

While the ships may well be of indentical design and purpose (cap ship killers maybe) the one on the right does actually look pretty beaten up. I wonder if there is any sort of visual damage modelling - like we see in some racing games for example - or it's just clever application of smoke and fire effects? Based on what's been said previously, I fully expect surface armaments to be both targetable and destroyable, but if this is taken to the next level with other indications of physical damage I'd be happy.

Regardless, if a hurting ship actually looks like it's hurting then that's a plus. Though a dent on an enemy hull where my shots just hit would be cool...but we ain't getting that.

The screen shot is rather fuzzy though isn't it - very difficult to make out details. I've no doubt that this is entirely deliberate on Egosofts part.

Would love to see a video clip of this battle....

Man what are you talking about. :? :?

What do you think a video snapshot is, a freeze frame from a VHS video tape?

Motion in a video can sometimes give the illusion of better quality; your brain has less time to take in the quality before it's given up because the frame's changed slightly. Take a screenshot of the video, or an individual frame, and it can quite often seem worse. It's confusing, but true.

Unfortunately it is not verified by ANY screenshot I have ever gotten from digital motion video. With two exceptions:

- Interlaced video. Very rare occasion nowadays (and 0% possibility in a game).

- Post processing that induces blur etc. This is still "clean" as the frame has digital effects, which are very much unlike analog effects.

If that's a still from a video then they're recording at a rather high resolution so likely some fairly good compression is being applied. All that being said I'm not entirely surprised at the quality.

A screenshot directly from the engine would have been perfect, but I'm happy to see anything at this stage, so a slightly blury capture from a highly compressed video is fine by me.

If this video was shot using a camera pointed at the screen of the PC running the demo (could be, couldn't it?) rathter than a FRAPS-type capture, then that would explain the poor quality further. Cameras by their very nature don't capture a "pure" snapshot of the action so much as they capture all the action that occurs over the period of the exposure. That's why an action scene in a High-def movie looks great in motion, but blurry when paused.

Of course I'm still waiting to be able to download the rolling demo it came from :)

Can I speak for more than myself when I say that this screen looks amazing (graphically)?

EDIT: As for the res quality it may be because the original image is 384x216 and was made larger to 1920x1080.

@nls

i was replaying the trailer vid (i know released last year), however if you pause it when the first ship is first entering the screen, the little ships are moving left to right across it or at the end when the skunk is flying towards you they all become slightly blurry as they are stopped mid frame. If different software was then used to capture the image it would deteriorate in quality.

I'm really to sad and I'm sorry about it to announce this. But this week it was the last new screenshot so far and for the next weeks you will have to forgo upon new pictures. I'm aware about the expectations that have been made here in the last months towards this thread and the new picture for the following week. But it was me that decided to make a cut here and give Egosoft the opportunity to make new screenshots in a better quality to show the actual development progress of X Rebirth.
So they're just finishing off a lot more of the game and then plan to provide more screenshots, when this is... we don't know. Hopefully Gamescon this year.
well I notice that this paragraph of Iifrit Tambuur-san has been edited out of the OP now, and this was the reason I was expecting better quality (high res) in game screenshots... so fair enough, looks like they won't be forthcoming atm... :(

Maybe he wasn't refering to the resolution since the past images had a resolution that was just fine, I think he was refering to the graphics. Ilfrit mentioned that he wanted to post images that would show the "actual development progress" of X:R. For a comparison I put two X:R pictures below, I stated my opinions on top of each link.

This is an older screen with better res but lower graphics.

I'm still shocked by how impressive the new screen is.

I think the capture was in native resolution. No resizing.

(and NO CHANCE of 384x216... how did you come up with that :D :D :D)

384 by 216 is a resolution, smartphone screen sized, and if you resize it to that size it looks like the sort of quality you'd expect on a screen that size.
It's entirely possible that it's taken from a video that was playing on a smartphone...

Personally? I think they're taunting a little, and will continue to do so for as long as people complain. ;)

@NLS EmperorJon is right about that, it's possible for the image to be 384x216.

How I got the number? Well, when I went to see Ilfrit's post on page 51 I saw two links. So I clicked on them both, and curious to see the res I saved them both to my computer. I checked the res of both and saw that one was 384x216 size (which had a much better looking res) and the image sized 1920x1080 (the one that me and otehrs said had bad res).

Just in case you want to check it out for yourself, I have the links.

The small image (with better res).

The large image (with worse res).

If it's true that EGOSOFT isn't using DX11 to make those graphics, then I'm really impressed. These graphics blow the graphics from other games with DX11 out of the water. Now combine those graphics with a new AI and physics and gameplay elements, WOW! And to top it all off it will be moddable (which I intend to script for X:R :D).
