[X3AP] *** modified ***
I have been playing a Humble Merchant on X3AP since I was able to get a copy of the game on Steam. I haven't loaded any mods or scripts beyond the eventually released Bonus Pack. I noticed the other day that I have somehow inherited the ***modified*** tags. I haven't opened the script editor, either. I never learned how to mess around with it due to RL time constraints. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks!

That is not the whole answer. Unfortunately once a save is marked modified there is nothing you can do to play on from that save as unmodified. (Often a good excuse to mod the game as you wish anyway.)
The AV issue is usually to do with real-time file checking as they are loaded from harddrive into memory. That may change the file attributes and cause the tag. The answer is often to turn off real-time checks of X3 files and start a new game or find an unmarked vanilla save.
It can be other things besides AV software though. Malware itself or gamefile corruption due to power glitches or faults during installation can do it too. Running the Steam verify gamefiles cache tool is a good way to catch corrupt gamefiles on the harddrive. Again a new start or an unmarked vanilla save would be required.

Ironically, there was a mod to remove the 'modified' graphic.ncc386 wrote:Well I ain't startin' over! I'll just plod along. I'm just glad it doesn't have the word "modified" superimposed on the screen like in X2. That was super irritating.

Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.
