Loading screen freeze on Steam - Fixed with Sound Driver.

Hi Guys,

Hoping you can help me out here, I've spent about an hour trying to sort this out and it's really bugging me now. I used to own the retail version of the game, which ran fine, and then lost the disk, so I bought the Steam version. Everytime I try to start a new game (or load for that matter) i's fine until the loading screen with the random imag,e where it just freezes and can only be closed with the Task Manager. I've updated all my drivers, run in compat. mode, adjusted all the graphics settings, reinstalled and verified the game - no matter what I try, the game just will not get past that loading screen! I've attached the DXDiag incase that's any use, but I'm hoping someone somewhere has had a similar problem and it's just something simple I've missed!

First a couple of simple background checks:

1. Run a Steam file verification one more time just to make sure it's correctly installed.
2. If you've run the game on that PC before and there might be setting kicking around from before, try ticking the "Ignore settings..." checkbox before running it, just once.
3. If neither of those help, run the game in Windowed mode to see if there are any messages hiding in the background.

I'd also recommend installing some proper sound drivers for whatever sound hardware you have, and possibly disabling your HDMI sound output.

Many thanks for the tips, I've re-verified the files, no problems, checked the ignore settings box and there aren't any messages displayed in the background. I've also looked for drivers, I've got Logitech X-210 speakers, and they don't seem to have any on the website, so I can't really update/reinstall them. I don't suppose you've got any other ideas?

It is not the maker of the speakers you should worry about so much as the sound chipset on your motherboard. If that is made by say RealTek, then you should download the latest RealTek Win7 x64 driver from the RealTek driver download site. Or use any other sound chipset brand-name that is appropriate to your motherboard specification. At the moment you are using an old default and very generic MicroSoft driver - presumably found from Windows Update which is never good at drivers for other firms' hardware.

Anyhow, change of subject. You used to have a retail version and did you use the trick of copying the retail files into the Steam folder to save download time? If you did, had that retail game ever been modified in any way with 3rd party mods or scripts? If so, those are not removed by a game uninstall, reinstall or verify as they are extra files the uninstaller/installer knows nothing about rather than missing or corrupt ones. They could be stopping your Steam game from running if you do indeed have them and you might have issues with previously modified gamesaves.

In that case you may have to delete the Steam folder for the X games and reinstall it without the extras via a clean download and update. You might need to consider a fresh game start too.

Oh yes, don't forget to install the Bonus Pack(s) correctly if you had them installed before and want to try your previous saves.

OK, so I've updated the drivers (from Realtek not the speakers, took me) - that's had no effect. I didn't copy the retail files across as I'd deleted them a few months ago. This is a completely unmodified version as well, part of the lure that got me back was the mods you can install, but I haven't had a chance to get any yet.

Try closing the Steam Client. Now go into the Steam folder on your PC and right-click on the Steam Application Icon and select 'Run as Admin'. When your Steam game list opens, select X3TC to run and see if that works. I am wondering if you have some sort of permissions issue.

Last ditch and if you have not done so, move (perhaps copy is better) the whole Steam folder out of Programs and either into the drive root directory or into a games folder. Try it again outside the extra control over the 'Programs' folders. You will have to redirect your shortcuts. Verify the game in its new location to get it properly accredited.

I've FINALLY managed to get it working - Realtek's website is an absolute nightmare to follow - a friend told me they'd set me up with the wrong sound driver, so I had to reinstall them again, but it's all working now! Thanks for all the help!
