Games we thought we'd never get any more

Post by Gazz »

I don't mean to print a blatant Kickstarter ad, it just happens that recently a few... unlikely... games have entered the pipeline there.
Games that publishers consider to be DOA or to have such a low unit-count to not be worth their established overhead per game.

Besides, there's no need to clutter up the forum with threads about individual games.

Wasteland 2 Seriously guys? Wasteland??? O.M.G.

Shadowrun Returns I don't see how they can pull that off but I want it. =)

Nekro Just found that one today.
Seems to be a Very Evil Edition of Triumph Studio's "Overlord".
With an overarching strategic layer instead of only linear missions / puzzles.
Evil is good.
I'm tired of being forced to be the knight in shining armour.

Xenonauts Kinda old news but so far looks to be the best X-Com remake - for those who want a retro-style UI.

Hmmm, Did see on steam earlier that Port Royale 3 is on the way, the company that made the first two went bust a couple of years back (Ascaron) and I never thought it sold enough for another dev company to pick it up, despite the fact it was quite awesome.

But yeah, that's happening now, a production sub company of Kalypso is taking it on apparently.

Chris Avellone will take part in Wasteland 2 development and Mark Morgan will make the music, while I have not played Wasteland 1 I will follow the game closely just because of those two guys

I love the kickstarter program, just because those guys are making those games because they want to make them, they want to make awesome games for the love of it, they are not in it for the quick buck or to pump out just another sequel of another sequel of a sequel which are all just the same sequels.

They already borked Patrizier IV, so they will bork Port Royale 3 aswell. Don't hope for too much.

I backed wasteland 2 and shadowrun returns
don't forget DFA
double fine adventure
the legendary Tim Schafer (what you mean you not heard of him?) Monkey Island 1 and 2 writer, Grim Fandango, Psychonauts and more

I backed that one too, really looking forward to an old school point and click adventure

and backed shadowrun returns and Wasteland 2

there is also The Banner Saga
4 hours from time of writing before its fully funded

and another game that has recently popped up on KS is this
(the only reason I not really mentioned KS or any of the games on it, is because I wasn't sure if it would have been against egosoft's anti advertising rule? but for the following game, I'm also supporting the game but not making it

and that game is
Grim Dawn

anyone remember Titan quest? it was a very good but very underrated ARPG by by a studio called ironlore, but later the studio got shut down,
now some of the devs have come together to form a indie studio called crate entertainment, the game Grim Dawn is using the same engine as TQ, but heavily modded, I have pre orded the game a while ago, but also they started a KS page, to raise $280,000 so that they can hire a couple more devs, (as only one programmer and one designer work fulltime) I think the game should reach that goal, I really hope so, not interested in D3, even Torchlight 2 has fallen off my radar for taking a stupid amount of time to come out, thanks to delays, and the xbox 360 release. but GD promises to be a lot darker and far more gritty game

anyway, I really hope it does well, and I hope a few more games that would never have seen the light of day come to KS, the more games that are getting made without publishers, the better, as they really are damaging games and gaming in general, sure stuff like skyrim would never have come out on KS, but that is a pretty shoddy game anyway, we are seeing way too many FPSs, way too many sequels, EA and other major publishers are destroying games, the farce of a game known as syndicate, (the original was a classic and can be found on GOG)

but anyway, I think KS is a good thing, and both DFA and WL2 can prove making a game on KS could work

but I will leave it there

I guess it's a judgement call.
It's not technically advertising for a commercial product on the shelves, like yet another cookie-cutter FPS.

These are basically projects "by gamers, for gamers" and only take off if gamers actually want them badly enough.

And I really want Nekro because Overlord was the last game where I could be really evil and kick unicorn butt. Plus, they have pooping pigs. Awesome.

Incidentally, Extra Credits just featured an episode on crowdfunding.

I don't have much to say about this that hasn't already been said, both here and elsewhere, so I'll leave the article with you,
since I'm still on the fence as to whether to start backing some of these project myself.

It IS an interesting development in game development/publishing, even if some of them are bound to fail.
We may need to modify the expected collision between our galaxy and Andromeda...

I've backed a couple on the lowest tier possible, so for me, its just like pre-ordering at a discounted price. Both of those, (Wasteland 2 & Shadowrun Returns) I was intrigued by the higher tiers, but I'm very cheap, and when you factor in shipping & VAT for physical goods, all enthusiasm drained away.

Mind, I'm not sure I'd back serious (to me - Pocket change to near everyone else) money until the first few games come through the pipeline... That said, if Chris Avellone carries through on his threat to make a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment via Kickstarter donations, I don't know what I'll do... Mind, said threat was made prior to Obsidian agreeing to give a hand designing & writing Wasteland 2.

... Also, I'm a little worried about them being unleashed from a publisher - Yes, many games could do with an extra month or threes polish, but without a firm hand on the tiller to hold to a release date, then Fallout 2 (As an example) would likely not have shipped for a couple of years after, as the developers seemed to have a 'Wouldn't it be cool if we add this?' mentality.

Time... Will tell.
