I checked out the info supplied below, works brilliantly.
Your game becomes 'modified' but so what, at least you can now play your game at full framerate again (and when egosoft releases the patch just reload your last unmodifed save).

Then go to gameplay>mission director>reset mission director.
If your Fps shot up when you did this then egosoft knows about this bug already. You can play with this however it will make your game modified.
Yeah, all the devs have been on xmas hols like the rest of us, I’m sure it’ll get fixed presently.
I started at 60fps and went down to 12fps, resetting the missions director put me back exactly to 60fps again, so it does sound like the missions aren’t terminating correctly in AP and stacking up in a queue somewhere.
Worked like a charm for me... except it reset the starting criteria for my broke assassin start and now I can't seem to get the campaign script to initiate.
People really shouldn't be using this as a general "fix". It resets all missions including the plot, abandons all mission objects and potentially creates new copies of them, as well as setting your game to modified and thereby disabling achievements. The patch will be along as soon as we've got it prepared and tested, and if your game has slowed down too much then you're better off just waiting if you have any plans to continue using your current savegames.

So it didn't really "work". heh I'm waiting for the official patch before doing anything drastic on my game.
As mentioned in my opening statement, when the patch arrives its very important you load your last UNMODIFIED save (the one before resetting the mission director).
The so called fix as noted will reset all missions and label your current game as modified and any saves based on it. But if you load the game previous to resetting the mission director you will get back to a normal non-modified game which you can use with the patch when it arrives.
Basically I’m using this temporary fix because my framerate went down to 12fps, so it allows me to continue playing, mostly exploring and trying out new stuff. When the patch arrives I will delete all my modified saves and reload my last unmodified save.
I think the devs would rather people not use this temporary fix because they’ll be players who will fail to delete their modified games when the time comes. If you know what you’re doing, then continue, if not leave well alone.

No, it worked fine. My frame rates went straight back to 100+, even in a sector that was full of asteroids and two moderate sized complexes. That it possibly broke the campaign doesn't change the fact that it did exactly what the OP said it would: resolve the lag and low frame rate issue. Nowhere in the original post did it say anything about this not breaking something.
