[AP] Freeze on entering sectors - probable faulty ship script/job found

EDIT: for a plausible explanation of freezes skip to glenmcd's post below.

Black Hole Sun. Self-explanatory. Neighbouring Xenon Sector loads fine. Permanent blank screen no matter whether jumpdrive or gates are used.

Win 7 64-bit, regularly defragged HDD. Clean German Steam versions of X3TC and X3AP, rehashed the files just recently. 32-bit dxdiag output below. Will probably try X3AP on my Ubuntu installation.

Could you try in windowed mode with Task Manager running at the side to see if the memory usage or CPU load is doing anything when it goes to black?

According to task manager, while jumping into BHS specifically the game fills RAM for 2 or 3 seconds and stops doing so abruptly (freezes). I tried jumping into surrounding sectors - worked just fine. I also tried jumping first into surrounding sectors and then BHS - freeze.

P.S. Forgot to mention that I have AP bonus pack installed though I played with it for some time already w/o any troubles.

I had a similar problem in TC in early December (before AP) but the sector in question was Menelaus's Paradise. At the time I was having infrequent memory hardware problems and this lead to memory corruption which then went into every save file. As I always keep a copy of every save (batches of ten at a time are copied off) I was able to go back through 15 or so saves until I found one that was okay. I played from there and the issue did not happen again. The big fix in my case was eventually upgrading the system as the fault was bent CPU socket pins on the motherboard.

To diagnose the problem a bit further, I made some scripts that made lists of stations, ships etc in Menelaus's Paradise when it was already corrupt, but couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. A Xenon Q was on a rampage but this is common in that sector, although BHS gets that too. I tried waiting a while before entering sector, entering via jumpdrive and by each of the three gates but none of these helped.

In your case try a previous save?

I tried the save of -3h of game time and jumping into BHS worked. Recent saves seem to fail.

You might have a corruption saved into those later saves, or there may be something happening in-sector now that causes the issues. If you already have any assets in the sector that crashes, try setting their orders to none before jumping in. Also you can use them or an asset sent in to see if anything unusual exists or is going on in that sector before you jump in (eg massive fleet engaging a single indestructable ship with no hull points).

There were no assets there. Nothing unusual is happening in BHS OOS, checked with Mistral SF. I tried first exploring the sector OOS, then jumping in - still freeze.

Okay, I have traced the corruption. Luckily the last of ten savegames was clean, playing from that point on. If you wish, I can provide two consequent saves, before and after corruption.

EDIT: After playing for some time BHS is corrupted again.

Logic says that there has to be an object or action in BHS that is causing the issue when you jump in. The problem is that I have no idea what or how to find it from here.

Please upload and link the good and bad saves (stating how far apart they are in gametime) and we might be able to narrow it down from those.

Okay, I have uploaded two packs of savegames.

In the first pack save 1 is clear and save 2 is corrupted. IIRC saves are ~20 min apart.

In the second pack save 1 is clear, the last save is corrupted and idk about saves in between.

@SkyBon, please do a memory test on your computer so that faulty hardware can be ruled out as the cause. In windows 7, restart and hold down the alt key around the time Windows is about to start loading.
Down the bottom of screen should be an option to perform diagnostics.

Thanks for that. I'll assume that you used a late version of memtest86 which supports both 32-bit and 64-bit, thus testing memory beyond 4GB. It doesn't matter that AP is not a 64-bit app as Windows is and it can still buffer the game save/reloads through 64-bit memory and thus corrupt the save along the way. But read on and an alternate explanation looks plausible.

I was able to readily duplicate the black screen issue on entering Black Hole Sun. There's a Rapid Response Teladi Phoenix in that sector with 86% hull. Move one of your MSFs close to it as these all seem to have Triplex scanners. Look at the sector map without jumping in there and you'll see that the Phoenix can't make up its mind which way it wants to go. I went back to an earlier (20 mins) save of yours and tracked that particular ship down in Wastelands. If you get info on the ship it will tell you that it is flying to Grand Exchange, yet its overall effective movement is in the opposite direction, but very slowly.

Next I set ownership to player and then tried various commands on the ship. Once I gave the "none" command to the Phoenix, I was able to fly into Black Hole Sun. If you go back to your earliest save you posted and fly into any sector that the Phoenix is in, you'll get the same lockup. In your earlier save try flying into Nathans Voyage and SETA for a while. The moment the Phoenix enters the East Gate from Wastelands, you'll get a lockup. Although I was viewing the East Gate, I didn't actually get to see the Phoenix enter before it locked up. But the timing was right for the expected Phoenix entry.

Diagnosing the ship commands: There's two scripts giving this ship commands, Task IDs 100 and 0. In each case, the running command (top of stack) is move to sector, and both at priority 0. Task ID 100 is commanding the ship to dock at the Argon Shipyard in Omicron Lyrae, so that the ship can be destructed. Task ID 0 is commanding the ship to get back to Grand Exchange so it can kill all enemies. So the fact that visually it can't make up its mind which way it wants to go would seem to be explained by this. Two drivers both with hand on steering wheel as it were, both with identical strength in their arms. So what is triggering Task ID 100 in this ship? A damaged hull that eventually invokes the wrath of G.O.D.? If so then I guess that might explain why this isn't happening all the time. Ships more often are either destroyed or maintain 100% hull. If my speculation is accurate this should lead to more lockups where there is more fighting, and more lockups in AP as compared to TC due to the war and pressure on the player to enter war sectors. All speculation mind you.

While it's possible (although frustrating) to reload and go elsewhere when this happens to a player, the same cannot be said about Dead is Dead mode. My last 4 DiD games ended with lockups, but as I mentioned above my hardware was highly suspect too. Even worse I'm using an Asus Essence STX sound card (but with latest drivers).

If you destroy the ship remotely you can enter the sector that it was in with no problem. If the player takes ownership of the ship and changes the command to none, Task ID 0 releases its grip and the ship flies on to Omicron Lyrae Argon shipyard and ceases to be the moment it docks. Along the way it is attacked by multiple Terran ships but fights them off no problem. If instead of commanding none you give any other command, you get the same problem back. The command you give at player level is Task ID 0 and at priority zero. I started a new AP game, had a quick look around and couldn't find any with Task ID 100 running but expect this will be readily explained by someone else. Task IDs start at 101 in types/Jobs. I tried setting hull to 50% on a bunch of capital military ships and SETA'd for a while but didn't see Task ID 100 run in any of these. I only watched for like 20 mins.

@Skybon, you can salvage your game from any of those saves, just don't enter any sector that the Phoenix is currently in or enters, until it gets destructed at the Argon Shipyard Omicron Lyrae. If you have one of your ships follow it watch out for the Terran military attacks. Due to the multiple commands it may take a very long time to reach its destination.

Thanks Alan. I don't want to scream bug just yet as this is only one occasion (that I've seen). If another one comes along or someone manages to force it to happen in a vanilla game then I agree it should be escalated and I'll then follow your advice.

P.S. This is a bug because it occured in almost Vanilla game (Vanilla+Bonus pack) and without outside glitches (RAM etc). Although rare it could readily occur in every game.

It moves if you don't look at the sector. The refresh mechanism is different depending on whether it's in sector, OOS and not in view, or OOS and being viewed. But don't bother waiting as even using above is painfully slow.

I managed to break the Phoenix out of its bind by purchasing a Discoverer S at Argon sector M148 shipyard with 1x IRE and fight software, and commanded it to attack the Phoenix in BHS. As soon as they met the Discoverer vanished, the Phoenix flew west at a much more reasonable speed and I was able to enter BHS. It cost about 60K for the disco plus 4% of your Teladi Majority Shareholder notoriety. Be sure to apologise to the Phoenix Captain as soon as you can so that he won't keep attacking all of your ships.
