However I do have concerns, things like 'Is it going to mean less customisation options?' 'Does it mean the game will be smaller scale if small ships like yours are going to be more of a focus in the late game?' 'Is it going to be a serious restriction of freedom in terms of how you want to play the game, or is it practical to play most of the game through proxy ships to allow you to do whatever you want with whatever ship type you need?'
I don't mind less customisation. Whoever tried to equip the whole M1 fighter contingent agree with me - you have to hate that manually adding upgrades, software and weapons to every single damn fighter by yourself. That's why M1 and wingmans are so useless - it take ages to configure them while stupid AI makes them dead in the matter of seconds.
I'm more like a combat guy (Freespace 2 FTW) than trader or empire buildier. If it'll get better command interface and more disposable fighters/wingmans/drone I'll be more than happy to pay a price of less customisation, especially for those big modular capships :)

I hope that they make weapons more ballanced. Now missiles vary from useless (most missiles) to mega overkill (M7M missile barrages).
Also I hope that they make primary weapons more diverse, like beam cannons, railguns, standard pulse laser guns (aka blob guns like PPC), capship missiles/torpedos.

well, that's the good angle of drones; it makes perfect sense for drone fighters to be standardized.

i just hope theres a good variety in fighter-type drones, since a lot of the drones sound like they will be utility ( like the Shield Drone).
Irrational factors are clearly at work.

The comparison with Darkstar One is bad, because DSO lagged a logical story. It was merely a bad written crime story where one is thought to be the enemy and in the end it was someone completely different - oh, how dramatic! The ship's upgrade feature also was a stupid idea which added nothing to non-represent success of this game. Collecting ancient crystals to gain update functions...

To be honest though, history wise X's story were even worse. As mentioned before writing a coherent story is definitely one of Egosoft's weakest point. We don't know yet, but if that's your take on the story then I have even more reason to worry.

In general less customisation is fine, as you said most of the time you won't be customising a lot of the ships in the fleet, but your personal ship is the HUGE exception to that rule, they seem to be going for the idea that your personal ship is very important, with the whole interior and cockpit and stuff, so it would be really missing something if you couldn't customise how it works a lot, which you would usually do by changing ship class, in rebirth? Who knows.

Comparing X and DSO stories.. I'd say that conceptually, the story for X games is actually more interesting... The absolute major failing in it has been the execution - partly, the game's engine really, really limits what you can do, partly the almost absolute lack of cutscenes and proper exposition/character-building distances the player further from the events.. and partly, the game's entire nature goes against the methods of the plot(s). Things are also very rushed, and not explored in any depth at all.

Perhaps with a new engine and revamped gameplay, Egosoft can finally properly implement their plot documents, without being brickwalled by the game & engine mechanics... We'll see.

Is this confirmed? Coz if we can fly any ship (apart from capship, that is clearly state that we'll have no direct control) from fighter to M6 via remote control, then the whole "one ship is bad" issue become non-existant...which would be good news...hell a greate news after the dissapointment with the statement that we can fly only one ship.

Think of it this way, the ship control issue is not an issue. you will contorl ships the same way you control ships every day when you play x games. you pick up a peripheral / human interface device and you control the ship represented on the screen. the only sifference is that now you'll be a space cowboy who has to say "hey darling take the wheel for a minute" to you co -pilot lol and then log into the other ship.

as for cap ships the only differnece will be you cant control the u down left right forward back faster slower movements with a joystick or mouse / keyboard which is fine by me because i like emmersion and ordering your subordinates to carry out a tactic or attack a target is much more immersive that shift-c , 2 , 2 :P lol

Nope. What's confirmed is that you can control drones. This includes combat (missiles & different laser?) mining and scanning drones. I think shield drones as well, but I don't remember that being confirmed explicitly...

Looks like there is a bit of confusion.

You can only issue orders to your ships, so you can "command" other ships, and looks like you can do that to a very detailed level.

You can only fly drones via a Virtual Interface in the manner of goggles that drop from your cockpit.

That is the only things confirmed by Bernd and info going around.

Bernd Lehahn wrote:But you also can still own and control drones and capital ships
I guess the defination of drones needs some clarification but he does mention capital ships as well.

I for one am excited by having a ship interior for the first time and who knows what modders can do with this? Make interiors for other ships. I hope now tho some more info will start flowing and cant wait to see what else is in store.

I didnt play darkstar 1 that long but I dont see harm in allowing the main story ship to add modules thus increasing its mass. I mean in the X series before, you upgraded your ship but really the only thing that ever changed visually was weapons. Whats wrong with adding a passenger hold and now seeing you ship showing it.

Too many are doomsaying the game before they even seen it. I for one applaud the fact that they are trying to make their game more immersive.

Thats doest give me back the ability to do wharever i want.

Whats the problem if i want to use a Caiman with forward IREs to hunt down other TS? i can do it in X3TC... thats the whole idea behind a sandbox, player able to use every element in the game as their wish.

X:R may have another elements, but it removes the most important one of in X games.

We dont even know what ship types are in game (in the case there is anything more than drones). There is nothing more than capitals and drones for all we known.

Boarding probably is out too, there no mention to it anywhere, i was hoping to be able to disable->disarm->board ships... That was one of the most important point in having subsystem targeting.

i think boarding will be in otherwise whats the point as bernd sais of disbabling say just the engines and jump drive for example.

I also agree that too many people are being doomsayers before the game has even been previewed properly by fans. who knows we may even get a small demo of sorts! + I hope they bring back the x3r simulator lol

Well we are doomsayers because as history has shown us, abandoning the way of previous games and coming with a completely new approach ends bad (Mass Effect 2) or leads directly to a disaster (Dragon Age 2). So it is better to be skeptical and be nicely surprised than to have high expectations and to be disappointed.

And as I mentioned earlier the total lack of news and total lack of concrete information from Egosoft just adds to it. Hello Egosoft, fire your marketing department already and hire stuff that will actually do its work.

The problem here is that all X games have a terrible ship combat AI. Take a look at your AI controlled M6s. It is a nightmare as all they can do is to circle around till they get blown up. Take a look at your fighters starting to shoot at maximum range, missing the enemy completely and running out of energy it the time the can actually score a hit. And these are just two examples. So the idea that I can not control my OWN ship simply terrifies me. Sure, they can make tha AI better, but they had 4 games to do so and they did not...

I'm also a bit worried with the whole "drones are expandable" stuff. That's fine, but how long does it take to switch drones when yours is destroyed? How fast can you switch between (the correct) drones during a fight? I guess that the drones will be divided in wings and you can switch between them easily, but is should be fast otherwise the fight is over before you're in a new drone!

Also, I hope the whole fighting in formation will be better. I hope you can fly with multiple drones in close formation and 'slave' all controls to your drone, giving you basically a super drone.

I find it kind of amusing you can be critical of the doomsayers, and be optimistic about an unmentioned feature, at the same time. Everyone is working from the same information available. Any given game element will be seen as good by some and bad by others. Personally I've not been excited by what I've seen so far, others mileage may vary. As plynak said, I'd rather have low expectations and be blown away when it's released, than spend the next several months on the edge of my seat with excitement to be let down. A lesson learned 10 minutes after playing Spore on its release day.

i find it amusing when people pounce on someone trying to be positive! :P lol

I will admit sequels like dragon age 2, kotor 2, CAC 4 etc were disastruss because they were either simplified for console crowd or they were just badly made or tryed to be too different.

I honestly think though that ego are going to add more than they take away. When i play x3tc i normally just sit back and watch my fleet of caps attack. or im in command of one which is no difereent realy to this virtual interface perspective ego are going for. granted there is no firm concrete information on whether you can actually "fly" caps or just command them.

Personnaly aslong as i can own them and command them as part of my fleet im not worried about flying them if it gives way to having a fully modelled living player ship that you can walk around in. + the fact that we will supposedly have npc interaction! im loving the idea of beaming over to my cap ship for a quick inspection of the crew lol

p.s a screen shot of an npc would be nice. im worried we will get oblivion style npc faces lol

have we any idea of what the recommended specs will be? and can anyone speculate on how much longer we will have to wait?
