Im not very used to posting in the forums and my english may not be so good but i have something that i've been wanting to say for quite some time, and that thing being in regards to the "omg only one ship" case.

Although we are only able to fly one ship, it may not be such a bad thing. As some posters have already speculated, this ship:

http://www.egosoft.com//img/content_x_rebirth_quote.gif

is going to be our starter/only ship, and then there are some that speculate that it is going to be upgradable, not like in XBTF where you only upgrade your tools/weapons/..., but upgrading it in a whole new way, to the point of changing it's looks, size and even the ship's class, being these 2 ships the end product:

http://www.egosoft.com/games/x_rebirth/ ... en_004.jpg ( Maybe a carrier)
http://www.egosoft.com/img/header_x_rebirth_02.jpg ( Maybe a Destroyer)

You can even see that these 2 different ships still have much in common if you compare them with each other and with the "outdated" one.

You cant upgrade a ship that much... its like buying a PT boat and "upgrade" it intro a battleship or carrier. Thats not an upgrade its a rebuilt. Not to metion the huge size diference.

You can use the trailer to get an aproximate size the of player ship... it flys enterely trought the camara in 1 second. I bet its 100m long MAX, if its larger than that, them its flying at an insanely high speed.

eh... i know i was just giving an example for how they could be upgraded (although it sounds a little exagerated) or what ships could be in our possesion.

1) The players ship will most likely be able to dock (not in a hanger but connect) to a capital ship carcase, no one knows this for sure but its one idea.

2) Egosoft have been prudent by changing the releases dateand releasing the game later....

A - because there are so many other AAA games coming out before christmas, so competing would be futile. I know most X players are not guna rush out and by Call of duty or battle field 3 but i think egosoft would like to atract new players with a more accesible game.

B - The above delay also allows more time for development which is a good think and will hopefully mean a few less bugs on release :)

Also who ever it was complaining about the fact people built new pc's expecting a dx11 HD graphics fest and then finding out its still dx9 , thats there own fault for being impatient and jumping to conclusions. + whats the problem you can now play other games at higher settings! lol DX9 also doesn't mean crap quality. im expecting skyrim to look nice on a pc even though they are still working to xbox 360 specs and just upgrading the texture sizes for the pc. aslong as its not like DA2 were you had to down load a 1G texture pack because you had a good pc that could run textures that should have shipped with the game lol

I agree with doug.

Egosoft really jumped the gun when they announced Rebirth, there's no way it can compete with the big names coming in. It's best that the game comes out when it can make the biggest splash possible; the extra development time is great, too. With games like the X-series, I prefer that the developers have more time to work rather than less (Terran Conflict still keeps me occupied, anyways).

I can live with a DX9 game. I've seen plenty of them do just fine in the visual quality department, and I'm guessing that the multi-core processor support is a more significant improvement in terms of performance, anyways.
Admitting you have a problem is the first step in figuring out how to make it worse.

I was just reading the interview, but I am actually starting to win favor with having drones. I just wonder what the distance limitations will be, like will you be able to be 10 "sectors" (I use the term sectors lightly) away and still be able to control your drone...

Hopefully the dialog will be kept to what is absolutely necessary, it will get old having to start a conversation if you need to ask a NPC to do a mundane task. Other than that I really like what I am hearing.

I can't wait to hear how the internals are going to work but either way I will be buying this game... Egosoft hasn't let me down yet and I will continue to support them until they do.

According to the interview at gamers blog, the game will use DX9 for now. It may use DX11 if the need arises(though I have no idea how they're gonna do that).
So, even if you have DX11 cards, its good since the'll be able to run thr game at a much better fram rate.

....
In this video discussion, he mentions the ability to control more ships while he is describing a satalite like object.

This tells me that the number of drones that we may control might be bound to some sort of logistical limitations, having recievers in the area where it is being controlled. Just a guess though.

I am loving what i see in that interview, the managment of stations and ships will be more complex than X3 titles!

It will be more of an RPG/ SIM rather than just a traditional sim but i think the chnage is for the better.

+ Automated Drones? If the ATF are in this game there guna be pissed! lol

Loving the fact you can customise which ship components you can have. You start with a hull and basicly decide whether you want a huge missile barge or a full on destroyer with cap ship weapons. Also seems you will be able to decide if you want to trade off firepower for sheilding etc, very interesting in my opinion.

Also stations are guna be emense, love the fact you basicly have to give managment staff a job interview lol

Poor old betty was getting overworked running my galactic empire all by herself lol

O.K. So in other words they played Freelancer and Darkstar One and decided to completely abandon their previous games and make a mixture. For me it is a big disappointment.

Changing to trade lanes as in Freelancer is the same like changing no ammo to ammo based weapons in Mass Effect. It is illogical and it has nothing to do with the brand.

And to give us only one ship, no matter how upgradable is simpy an idiotic idea, especially when we see where it lead in Darkstar One. It becomes boring really soon when you see the same ship over and over.

The inability to fly other ships is a major no go for me. Since X2 my gameplay is to have an M2, park it in front of enemies and watch the show. This will not be possible anymore.

So those other simplifications like no docking etc. only adds to my disappointment.

It is a shame, but so far it seems that Rebirth will be the first X game missing in my collection.

As Bernd stated on the GC the player can 'fly' all ships, but he can only sit in one ship. So flying means having control about the ship. The comparison with Darkstar One is bad, because DSO lagged a logical story. It was merely a bad written crime story where one is thought to be the enemy and in the end it was someone completely different - oh, how dramatic! The ship's upgrade feature also was a stupid idea which added nothing to non-represent success of this game. Collecting ancient crystals to gain update functions...

In the end it's a good idea to wait and see what Egosoft produces. Read the user comments about it and watch the ingame videos that hopefully will be available at that time and then you can make a decission. Before that everything is just bad guessing about something no one really yet knows.

I think the information from Bernd recently makes perfect sense for X:R, really looking forward to seeing the changes. The trade-off between drone flying + upgraded player ship vs. jumping between ships is totally worth it IMHO flying ships in X3 was like everything being a drone.

Sounds like a huge amount of work I'm going on a chill diet now I can't see this title being released for a good while we would have heard more by now if it was closer to release.

Here is how i see the issue with one ship and "drones".

As we know you pilot one cool ship similar to xbtf which we all loved otherwise we wouldn't all be here. But unlike xbtf we have "drones" which we can hop in and control which if im right have their own cockpit kinda view. Now the term "drone" means just a simple machine gun on a thruster to most but I think in X Rebirth "drones" are like fighters. They look like fighter type craft as in size and shape and hopefully will be able to take a few hits.

This of course means piloting drones will take you away from your main ship so to speak which will have the co-pilot take control of your ship and keep it safe which i think is the main reason for the co-pilot so you can do this.

Also if and its a BIG "if" Egosoft can make it so the drones are modable to the modders then these drones could very well be made with fighter 3d models and possibly new custom cockpits of sorts for these drones to turn them into m5-m3 or other types of ships. So even tho at first drones will be drones even tho their kinda like m5-m3 ships but probably a bit less capable they will still be different ships you can take control of and fly just as if your in them yourselves. Then later on when modders get used to the new modding structure and tools perhaps then the 3d models can be changed and maybe with help from ES modding wise can have custom cockpits for each drone, maybe add to the number of drones like lets say in the game launch theirs 10 drones you can control then hopefully if not hardcoded drones can be modded in and not replace original drones which would increase the number of drones available on top of the stock number of drones to 20+. Heck maybe modders can make drones race specific later too.

Modding is still the deciding factor as to getting proper fighters and other ships back possibly but knowing ES they had the community modders in mind when doing drones.

So "drones" being really another name for remote controlled fighters or utility craft might not be "that" bad and could in the future be expanded on to introduce full fighter and other craft you can fly by modders if all goes well.

Well that's what im feeling might be the case.

yeah flying capital ships in x3 was like having a camera strapped to the front of the ship lol so drones will be no different.

also if drones are like fighters then what the difference between them and x3 fighters. the x3 fighters / wingmen were dumb and crashed into each other anyway so your not missing much lol mabye the drones will be more intelligent!

I like the ammo based weapons in ME2 :)
Anyway lorewise adding trade lanes to X-universe isn't such a dramatic change comparing to ME2 ammo base weapons. We all know that jump gates still exist in X-R. Trade lanes are natural development step for Gate network limitations - remember, apart from Terrans TOA, commonwealth races had no way to move around their star systems in resonably fast way. Thats why Our Solar System was much more economically developed than half of Argon Federation (which was multi sector/system entity).

About player ship:
I think that powerwise it will be fighter-like light M6 with upgrades to very heavy M6 (gunboat). I think that Ego stated that they don't want you to take on whole universe by yourself, so I guess if you want to attack biggger capship, you would have to bring your own capship to the fight.

Also that Battlestar Carrier screenshots and the carrier conceptart on facebook clearly show a large front docking/hangar deck that propably has a purpose to dock your AP Gunner (the size of that deck clearly indicate that). So you dock you ship to capship to be safer in crossfire while issuing commands to that capship or whole fleet.
This way you have whole fighter-capship range covered without one IMBA ship.

Also now I think that delay to 1Q 2012 is a good decision - less bugs, maybe more content, and more time to upgrade my PC (if required).

That make sense, so you'll still be stuck with one cockpit and the same crew, but technically you would be flying a bigger ship. And when that ship takes too much damage you can just eject your AP Gunner and flee.

I'd like more information about this 'one ship' thing.

What it sounds like is that you will get one ship to start with, and it'll be really fleshed out, with a real cockpit and interior and everything, which is lovely.

From there, you will be able to remotely switch control to other ships in your fleet, similar to transporting over in X3, but unlike in X3 you don't actually transport anywhere, and you subsequently don't die when your remote controlled ships get blown up.

In theory I quite like this, as fighter through to corvette class ships are always the most fun to fly in X, so giving the player something in that category to fly around it and having it be reallly well executed is a nice thing to have in the game, and I would also like to be able to remote control ships, as it does make sense in game and would be very useful to be able to do. Presumably you can also park your little ship somewhere as well, possibly inside a larger ship which you then remote control, so it may actually be much like X3 only you get your small ship as an escape pod of sorts.

However I do have concerns, things like 'Is it going to mean less customisation options?' 'Does it mean the game will be smaller scale if small ships like yours are going to be more of a focus in the late game?' 'Is it going to be a serious restriction of freedom in terms of how you want to play the game, or is it practical to play most of the game through proxy ships to allow you to do whatever you want with whatever ship type you need?'

I'm guessing that the game is going to be sort of smaller in scale, in the sense that it seems to be focussin on stations and the space immediately around them, so it'll have less huge armadas of capital ships nuking eachother from across an empty sector, and more fighters and corvettes flying around among the structure of a station doing cool stuff.

If that's so, it'll be different, but I think it'll be better, X has always suffered somewhat from being a bit empty, so focussing in a bit and giving sectors more character and structure with big stations would probably make what content is in the game, a lot more diverse and interesting.

Plus it sounds like they're going for the immersion factor, which having played with cockpit mods and such, really makes the game a lot more fun, it becomes enjoyable just to fly around and feel immersed in the game.

As for the drones thing, past a very early point in X3, most ships were effectively drones anyway, as in 'unmanned cheap disposable fairly stupid menial workers'.

Those 30 or so fighters defending your weed plex? You could just as easily replace them with actual robots, you're never going to fly them, they just need to patrol and shoot enemies. Same with the hundred or so TSs you have supplying everything.

Honestly simplifying it to just 'robots' is nice, and also brings up the possibility of being able to produce your own, which would be much nicer than having to buy, equip and manage each one as if it were an individual. Treating your mass produced fodder like mass produced fodder is probably a lot better for useability.

Also quick question, what are 'trade lanes'? Never played freelancer.
