Isn't that a tractor beam? We have those already.shebi01 wrote: So maybe what they are talking about is a focusable gravity beam that can pull smaller ships in to the bigger one.

I did say a few pages back that the next X-News would be due at the end of this month.KloHunt3r wrote:So... it's been two months since the last update.
Any news, Toastie?

What would be really good Toastie is if X-News could suggest or describe a manner in which fans could contribute positively to X-Rebirth...
Perhaps a top10 list of reasons (from the fans) why someone should give X-Rebirth a go if :
1. new to space combat and trading single player game.
2. have played X3 and not enjoyed it as much as they hoped.

But they do!perkint wrote:Except as Nanook said, if they can do that, why don't they use it as a weapon?
Tim
However - it are all prototypes. The moment they use that weapon the gravitational "impulse" let the other ship collide whit yours. A lot of people are thinking it was bad AI, but now we all know better now...

Thank youfesta_freak wrote:Infinity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7eREddMjt4.frankzappa wrote: That would be greatI doubt it will happen though, but maybe someone can answer. It reminds me that I saw a video recently of a game engine which let you fly from space and then fly around planets. It looked amazing. I need to try to remember the name.
Patiently awaiting info on X: Rebirth!

Yerp, XRebirth may have strong competition in Infinity. Really sweet engine, with being able to enter a planet from outterspace with no loading screens, fly right in (its never been done before). But I haven't heard anything about a Economy in Infinity yet, does anyone know if its going to have one with trading n stuff like X series/freelancer?

I have no idea if this is the thread for game suggestions for X rebirth but here's a few for me, based on what worked for me in previous games...
(1) I remember in X2 you could set up a camera for each of your 6 turrets, 3 on each side, so you could see where the turret was pointing at and shooting. That was a really great way of feeling you were on the bridge of a ship in a battle and could get a sense of what was going on around you. I'd love if that was part of XR
(2) The way you could swap weapons in X3:R was 100 times better than X3:TC. You should go back to that
(3) In Xtended they have a system where there is a "Core" set of weapons that anyone can use and then you have specialty weapons that are specific to certain races. That's a good way of actually making people make choices about the race of ship they are flying, while still keeping the "everyman" feel of ships if that's what you want to do.
(4) Raising your rep with one race should decrease your rep with others. maybe not to the same amount, so if people want to be friendly with everyone they still can, you just can work at it. Or focus on one race.
Thats enough for now

As far as I know, Infinity has been at the stage of "pretty graphics demonstrator" for *years* now--I don't know if even the author knows what he's going to do with the engine, or how long it will take!pwnstar23 wrote:Yerp, XRebirth may have strong competition in Infinity. I thought this is going to be mmo of sorts. Therefore no competition for XR.pjknibbs wrote:As far as I know, Infinity has been at the stage of "pretty graphics demonstrator" for *years* now--I don't know if even the author knows what he's going to do with the engine, or how long it will take!pwnstar23 wrote:Yerp, XRebirth may have strong competition in Infinity. Even though I would be happy just having that alpha-beta-whatever version it is in now and flying everywhere even though there is nothing to do.

Pretty sure in the X2 cutsceen the argon lifter take off from the middle of the city (on a high platform).Nanook wrote: Not sure where you get this from, since you're assuming a drive mechanism that's not stated in the game as well as assuming they're lifting off from the middle of some city.
The current game mechanisms are if not currently theoretically possible, at least they're plausible within the accepted 'norms' of current sci-fi. So we can excuse and accept them as 'future technology' that don't depart too much from current scientific understandings. However, the proposed mechanism to keep small ships close to large ones seems to be totally implausible, without further knowledge of how it 'works'.
I think so far we're missing one important piece of information. Is this effect a "feature" of the ship, or something inherited by design. It's not that big of a deal if it's a feature, aka a specific ability that can be turn on/off by the ship depending on the situation. Tractor Beam, Polarized hull, or create a dense ionized field ...etc..., it's not that uncommon.
It would be weird if it's inherited by design, meaning it's something that exists because of how the ship is built (like you can't turn Earth's gravity off at convenience) For once because of all the reason about physical impossibility, it's also a liability from the sound of it. Defense mechanism is about deflect incoming projectiles, if a ship always like this I can only imagine kinetic weapon would give it a whole world of hurting. I wouldn't need fancy weapon if the ship always emit this kind of gravity, all I need is a mass driver and keep hurling asteroid at it

Yeah infinity has videos from 2005 I think. They looked cool back then and they look amazing now but it is a very small team working on it, like under 5 I think. They just recently started working on it full time I believe but it won't be done for a very long time
Something to look forward too though.
Anyways, I'm eagerly awaiting the X-universe news!

interesting article, i loved when it started talking like a 5 year old baby... or mabey that was just the translator!
hope that someone can point me towards a english version
There are a couple things i really want to see in X-rebirth, such as better remote exploration commands, and mabey the ability to use mods and get steam achivments in 1 playthough!

There are only two things in life that matter, and I have them both. They're not what you might think, and once you learn that you'll be much happier.

You must have missed the combat videos. They have real time combat like x series in the engine, check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2rcjpVTmm4supahfly wrote:I thought this is going to be mmo of sorts. I would like to see competition in this genre there are not many games like this, maybe competition in the genre would increase sales?
