Think the only way it could placate me is if the "player ship" is customizable by look, race style, even being able to upgrade the size of the ship. As by customization I mean being able to redesign the ship to what your play style is.
If that is what they are going for then I don't have an issue one bit but if not... well... I'll just leave it at that and not my head off.
also...
it's in german but according to the people posting and using google translate that basically speaks volumes.
I have to say, I jumped into the series at TC and loved it...now they are aiming to make me leave it??
I thought piloting and acquiring different ships was part of the heart of X. Starting with something not-so-great and then you feel awesome when you get your first heavy fighter and your first corvette etc.
If you want a different perspective, stand on your head.
No capital ships, no flying other ships, you get to fly only one ship?
Well screw this game. Guess I will just rely on mods for TC.
EDIT: I went into rage mode too soon. Apparently you are able to "remote control" other ships that you own, which basically means you are there in it. If that ship dies you lose connection and return to your primary ship. There is a large discussion on the announcement forum. And translation mishaps can cause frustration.

Death is not a hunter unbeknownst to its prey, one is always aware that it lies in wait. Though life merely a journey to the grave, it must not be undertaken without hope. Only then will a traveler's story live on, treasured by who bid him farewell. But alas, my guest's life has ended, his tale left unwritten
I think I understand what is said about the ``only one ship`` thing
you have YOUR ship (like the Xproto)
and you can own and controle other ones but with no cockpit so you are remote controling them...
what do you guys think?

Yeah it sounds like you remote-control ships from your own player ship.
Which I don't particularly like the sound of. I know that rationally it's just an additional abstraction layer and nothing more, but viscerally there's a disconnect. Either you're worrying about your NPC pilot handling your 'personal safety' in a mass battle while you virtually joy-ride a cruiser, or you've parked your personal ship somewhere safe and aren't actually in any real danger. There's an emotional attachment to being "in" a large ship that's lost by remote piloting, for me. I actually care more about that than about directly controlling capital ships. I'd be happier "in" a capital ship that you then have to order around via a captain intermediary or something.
Underlying this is the loss of a certain freedom of choice. Sure, you can now virtual-jack warheads with drones or something, but we've lost one important choice: Which ship we're personally piloting around the universe. We're now locked in to a single ship, and only get to remote-control others.

It very much does take away choice. And I have no idea what is actually gained. In TC you can jump from ship to ship(transporter device), and you can still order unmanned ships around.
Well I had a bad feeling from the start when they talked about a persistent, female co-pilot and how you don't do a lot of things directly any more.
If all I wanted was to be some no-risk, armchair, space-general, I'd fire up my copy of Homeworld 2 or SSE.
Needlessly reinventing the wheel is what this sounds like. This stuff wasn't something that I ever heard people complain about.

yes the new system sounds cool if it dos end up working , in X-tension my ships was a mamba in X2 it was to and in X3 r and X3 tc it still is to
we all get our ``own ship``
if we can chabge its aperance thats cool
I hope we can tune it....but in a balenced way....
also looking at the cockpit pics I thinks Its that ship.
just look at the shape of the cockpit . http://www.egosoft.com//img/content_x_rebirth_quote.gif

I'd guess so too.
Also since it look like the Albion Pride from X3:AP which would explain the
"old ship with a glorious past" thing.
Just like most of you I'm also not that happy about the fact that we cannot change the player ship. As a matter of fact I found it rather entertaining to pilot a Capital armed with Flak and watch fighters explode all around
guess I'll wait for some reviews too before consindering to buy Rebirth
@ JunK667: You have a replied to a post that is nearly a year old on a topic moved to its own X-Rebirth forum. There are newer and active 'One ship' threads there.
