I imagine now it will become a debate like cockpits and planet landing, but personally I like capital ship piloting and can't understand if it were to be removed. A huge part of the allure for me in my short time playing this game is that I can fly any ship I want, whenever I want. I know it could be an error in translation, but to see it said that 'only a small portion of players care about it' is surprising to me. I'd think nearly everyone who played a game long enough to have any kind of empire would like it. I pesonally almost exclusively fly M7's and M2's, with an occasional foray into a faster M3/4/5/6 just to taxi around/blow up a couple pesky enemies.

In a way it would be cool if capital ships were commanded from the bridge by giving instructions for the crew, I recall a submarine game this was done in a relatively cool way, the name escapes me though.
I have to say, if they remove player control of large ships apart from owning and guiding them from a fighter, I'll be quite disappointed. I mean, I trust Egosoft to make good games and all that, but one of the things I really love about X3TC is that sense of scale...that you start in a Buster with a 5-meter wingspan and end up slowly gliding through sectors in a massive warship the size of a small town if you so wish.
Variety was one of the things I really liked about IL-2 flight sims as well...I would spend hours just trying out different aircraft.
It's like, games where you pilot things have developed from just having a couple of alternative machines for the player to often being able to jump in the controls of any vessel in the game. I really don't want to go back to piloting just a couple of fighter classes!
The only way I would be happy with that was if they actually made piloting a spacecraft simulator-grade hard, and I mean for real. Jump in the controls cold without a clue and you can't even turn the damn thing on-hard. Didn't remember to pressurize the cockpit before launch or forgot to manually set the engine RPM limit to reflect the gravity well of the nearby planet? Splat. Boom. Perform a jump without a manually-adjusted calibration? Splat. Problem with starboard vernier nozzle? Oops, no left turns for you.
I don't see this happening so I want a large variety of different craft to fly...if the only attributes of a craft are speed, rate of turn and acceleration there's really no excuse for not having a lot of variety.

Bernd talks about not being able to steer the capital ships from the bridge. That is a very (very) big leap to get from there to only one ship. I suspect it's not even meant to mean you can't own and control cap ships. Just that you have a crew to help, such as pilots, turrets crews, etc.
