Think about the main gripes of X3 -

Autopillock
Static political domains
OOS combat
Sector/gate structure
Fleet equipping/management

So, dump the characters, maybe keep the universe, maybe change the way of getting round. I think someone else suggested the gates failed so you need to find the sectors yourself (which means you'll need a properly last ship!!!) and deploy new jump markers. I like that idea.

And OOS will change but maybe not that much (yeah, it's limited, but the reasons for it have not completely disappeared). I think the races may well war with each other properly - that'll be fun :twisted:

Autopillock will have upgraded gerbils (maybe even as far as some lower primate) but still not as far as a higher form of primate :p

And, finally, a proper, working, easy fleet control interface! Yippee!! :D

But they're all fairly easy predictions - let's face it, Egosoft will have been looking at the limitations of the current engine (and it's strengths) when looking for a functional design for the new one.

It'll be a space game. It'll be free form (pirate, smuggle, trade, war monger, bounty hunter, whatever). It'll have a real economy (ie everything needs raw materials to be produced and these raw materials will need to be shipped round either by NPCs or player - energy will will probably be free to NPC and require some form of resource for player, as it does now).

It'll be brilliant :D

I might be wrong, but didn't EgoSoft say that the Encyclopedia will be updated occasionally? Because I'm still waiting for such an occasion.....
Oh, and they should really make a "We want TNBT" emote :D

Oh, I forgot - complexes!!! :rant:

That'll be handled better, in TNBT. Not sure if it'll have station construction in the same sort of way, but I am sure combining multiple construction modules/requirements will be handled in a much easier way :)

Choggy2 and Perkint nailed it imo. Or what I am hoping for.

Last thing I'd add is these:
Reactive race ranks. I.E. If two races hate each other you can only be friends with one. Increasing rep with one, decreases it with another. Etc etc.

Pirates. Distinct clans, roughly based on race. It doesn't make sense that they are roughly all the same.

Reactive universe. Enemy races can and will take each others sectors. Possibly allow a system whereby sectors have a security rating. Like the current core and border but more so. The higher the security rating, the more defense forces. Balancing this should allow things to change without changing too much. An X3 example would be the paranid would never be able to take argon prime, but would quite easily take cloudbase SW.

Trading software needs to be fixed. In that things like CAG/CLS or at least their functionality should be basic parts of the game, not modded in extras. Its just a mess now in X, so many different options new players really have no hope.

I for one would like more interaction with planets. Landing on them, even if its a simple cut scene to a base, would massively add to the immersion.
In X the planets may as well not be there at all, and its just doesn't feel right.
They should have an impact on the economy. Consume and produce wares.

I dont think there is anything wrong with the gate system as a principle. Simply because Freelancer manages it just fine. No face plants, easy and intuitive.
I also liked the fact you had to use "accelerator" like tubes to get across sectors. As really sectors feel a bit small in X... Space is big.
I think there should be more of a distinction between star systems. Say for example, you'd use jumpgates to travel between solar systems. Then each solar system had a system map made up of sector maps.
Maybe the hinted at FLD may hint ever so slightly at something like this xD

Complexes. Being able to build stuff is one like this is an immense part of x for me. However the difficulties in doing it, and the effect on performance are just too much. As already said need to be fixed. Basically something like the complex cleaner mod but way more sexy looking. As you add stations it grows and changes etc. Conventional scifi usually has such things ring shaped.
Maybe the complex construction kit would be way more expensive but you'd only need one, basically laying down the framework. Come in different capacity sizes etc.

Wing and fleet management. It should be easy to select and group ships, and send them off to do an order as a group without crashing into each other. Literally be able to mouse drag boxes around groups, or use conventional windows commands to select them from lists. Press one hotkey to group them. Then be able to issue any order that all the ships in the group can carry out to all of them at once. Then they go do it in formation.

A comprehensive tutorial please!
