"The known Terrorist and pirate leader Sebastian Gauge was last seen in the battle for Senators Badlands. The battle was to be a coordinated attack by the USC against the terrorist organization known as the Yaki. The operation went afoul when the infamous Yaki vessel known as the 'Scurvy Dervish' destroyed an unidentified Yokohama before escaping under heavy Point Singularity fire from the lead Tokyo. Sources say the Tokyo jumped out shortly after it's escort was lost..................."

"This now in, we have just received an official press report from USC command pertaining to the events in question. It seems that all reports of the Scurvy Dervishes involvement in the destruction of the USC...Navajo were spread by Yaki agents as propaganda to fuel the fear they hold over the commonwealth races. Jon Tanaka, the Commander of the USC Valiant which led the strike force reports here that the Navajo was lost due to a containment leak in the weapons cooling systems causing an explosion which in turn caused the antimatter ordinance being carried to detonate, destroying the ship and killing all on board. Apparently the Scurvy Dervish fled shortly after the USC fleet jumped into the sector. I quote directly from the report I see here in front of me."

"Our forces are stronger than any in the known universe, all terrorist threats will be eliminated in short order."
- USC Commander Jon Tanaka

"We here at the Sol News Network express out deepest condolences to the families of the brave warriors that died aboard the Navajo, a moment of silence....

Sector: Emperors Ridge - Paranid Border

"Are these people SERIOUS?!" Screamed my helmsman and navigator Ikko Maru with a look of pure fury on his face.

We all turned from the computer monitor to look at him.

"Calm Ikko... It is to be expected, we knew that when we received our orders from the Circle of Twelve." I said trying to sooth him. The Bastu is an ace pilot but too young for this kind of pressure.

"Yaki Intelligence is rarely wrong, yet it was wrong this time. What were the Terrans thinking, sending in a single Carrier and Frigate escort
to take on the entire Yaki Armada? We were expecting ten times that..." Aiden Nguyen, my first officer looked concerned, he is always seeing
patterns to events, always finding connections that will lead us to a new piece of intelligence.

"What were the Terrans thinking, sending a single Carrier and Frigate to take on the Scurvy Dervish?!?" Gray Stone, a grizzled veteran of the last Paranid war, and a master tactician barked with a rough laugh that smelt slightly of Yaki's finest gin.

We were all living well at the moment after our latest acquisitions.

"Remember Ikko, when one engages the Terrans in war, one is also engaging in a war of propaganda, and lies." my science officer intoned with mock solemnity, we all burst out laughing as she put her nose back into the files she was reading, she tried not to laugh but a small smile crept onto her face, just hidden behind the yellow folder she was holding.

There was a long pause of silence and I looked up toward the monitor where Hoshi hacked into the Sol News Network, routing the stream through the Jumpgate system. Then I looked back down at the faces of my people. I could see that despite the apparent good spirit my crew was in, they were worried. They had a reason to be, soon the Yaki would be in all out war with half of commonwealth space, starting with the Paranid, and now we have the Terrans to face. Our long-ago brothers and sisters will likely turn out to be our most dangerous enemies.

I grabbed eye contact with each of them and began speaking again.

"In any case we need to get used to the propaganda, in a war for freedom half the battle is winning over the hearts and minds of the ones oppressed. Pirates? Terrorists? We are neither of these things, we fight for liberty. You all know the histories of our people. We the Yaki are the ones who have stood up to the never-ending slew of corrupt political regimes, and police states. We left Sol as mercenaries and cannon fodder, yet we were the ones who held the machines back long enough for the Sol gate to be destroyed with us trapped on the wrong side.

Soon after, conflict arose between the Yaki and the Gunners for their betrayal. It was Gunne's pride that destroyed all chances of peace between the Yaki and the Argon. Since then we have lived as nomads and outcasts with few friends, and many enemies. Yet once again we are called to be the ones to hold the lines, because no one else will.

The Argon will be of little help in the coming days, they have more problems in the streets of Argon prime than half the galaxy put together.

We have intelligence reports that the Terran government suffered yet another silent coup and are now building a war machine to begin expansion through commonwealth space. This compounds the problem exponentially.

The Paranid are stirring yet again, scouts have sent word of a capital fleet amassing near Paranid Prime. Argon Prime being the most likely target. Intelligence also reports that Xaar has constructed a massive mind washing facility aboard a Paranid TL somewhere near Trinity Sanctum.

The Boron military has all but been wiped out by our Split "allies." A shame too as their ships are very effective in electronic warfare, which will be all important against the machines.

While all this goes on every day more and more Xenon flood into the uncharted space directly bordering the Commonwealth. The machines are the true threat, they surround us, yet the governments both Terran and Commonwealth alike do little to stop them. Too busy plotting against the galaxy themselves, or too blind to see what is right in front of them. Luckily the machines still wait, biding their time... Not to mention the Kha'ak..."

I cut off abruptly realizing that my little speech went to a place that would cause more worries than it would alleviate. Though all veterans of many battles, I held few worries of my own about them.

"Tis a mess, what's your point Cap'n?" Gray said gruffly.

"The point is we will soon be facing a galaxy at war, and we must be prepared... Xaar must go down before we have a hope against the Xenon. Then the Commonwealth must be made as one against the machines is any of us are to survive. We again hold the front lines..."

The silence stretched on for many moments until I calmed down and collected my thoughts, what were we talking about? Oh yes...

"Anyway... back to business, we are capturing Paranid fighters at a decent pace, I wouldn't let a Yaki pilot get caught dead in one of the ugly little Space-Otters, but they all carry much needed parts and supplies. we struck gold with that Mercury XL Freighter, the ore it was carrying will greatly help the Yaki cause. So far we have a 100% capture rate for the pilots of the ships we requisition from the paranid...

Speaking of which... Hoshi, how are the finances looking? And are we nearly ready to begin the reversal process on the mind washing Xaar has put on those poor Bastu's?

Hoshi my "Technical Adviser" / Engineer / Science Officer / Accountant skittered over to me from across the room dropping a few papers along the way, why she uses paper in this day and age is beyond me..I mean, where did she even get the stuff? Hoshi Ara is 5 ft 1, 90lbs of pure bookworm, she collects knowledge like the rest of us collect loot and credits. To be honest she keeps this whole ship and its crew in one piece, you wouldn't know it by looking at her but she is a crack shot with a blaster too.

"Cap'n, here we have the figures for this weeks..salvage operations in Paranid border space, 5 fighters captured, 2 M3, 1 M4, 1 M5..."

She went on to list the exact figures for parts and components gained, plus credits earned at the Yaki Shipyard, I stopped her before she could start on with economic statistics.

"Thank you! how about the prisoners?"

"I estimate out of our five prisoners there is a 86% chance four will not survive the reversal process. Yaki scientists have been working for a long time on a process that can reverse Xaar's mind washing capabilities with 100% efficiency, yet we have not made great progress. Partly due to the lack of captured Paranid warriors, and partly due to limited resources. Most Paranid who are in the Yaki ranks were born on Yaki Prime in Weaver's Tempest. Those who have volunteered have only been helpful in better understanding Paranid physiology... For example, did you know that their third eye is really a........."

I cut her off there again, did I mention she also holds great fascination with biology?

"Thank you Hoshi, you can go back to reading now."

She beamed at me before skittering away picking up the papers she dropped before she sat back down tucking her legs up under her, already lost back in her analysis of the reports in front of her..

After we got done eating lunch and discussing our current situation we all went back up to the CIC to relieve the standby crew. I stood next to the command station looking at the stars through the viewscreen, the local planet glowed with life, once a Yaki stronghold during the last great war, it now serves as a "Holy Military Base" for High Priest Muckity Muck.

Gravidar is what guides us through space, yet the view screen is where we really get to appreciate the wonder of it, and the tragedy of it.

"Alright people, I think it is time we bolster our forces for these special operations. So far the Scurvy Dervish has held her own but the Paranid are sending more and more fighters to escort their corvettes, it's time we had some fighter support of our own.

Spool up the Jumpdrive, set course for Senators Badlands, North gate.

My rep with most races is low eg. <Antagonist except the Teladi "Profit Opportunity", Split "Friend" , Yaki, and Pirates are also friends at the moment, though I'm sure I will be pissing off the pirates soon enough.... I put myself at Terrorist rank with the Terrans after the Yokohama incident when the game first started.

I plan on flying mostly Yaki and Pirate ships, but I am not going to limit myself if the opportunity presents itself. *wink* :)

"Reporting to you first from my deep cover GNN M5, I am here at the site of a devastating encounter between Yaki forces and the Paranid Empire in Trinity Sanctum. Eye-witness reports tell of the infamous Yaki Pirate vessel, the Scurvy Dervish attacking, and destroying a defenseless Paranid Casino ship, The Duke's Luck. The massive Cruise Liner was destroyed soon after the pirates realized a Paranid Military Destroyer was closing in on them. The death toll is currently unknown but is estimated to be in the thousands, this may be the final straw that pushes the Paranid military to finally clear the Yaki from their space once and for all. More will come as more is learned. This is Harriet Sharlea signing off..."

Sector: Pontifex Realm - Paranid Border
Location: CIC of the Scurvy Dervish - Exiting the North Gate
Date: 03/06/2939
Time: 1523 Hrs Earth Standard

The Command Crew of the Scurvy Dervish moves about the CIC with the skill and calm composure that can only be acquired by years of service in the Yaki Armada. Except one… In all my life I have never seen a better pilot. He has one flaw though, the tendency to panic at the sight of red on the helms gravidar.

Young Ikko Maru, an eighteen year old prodigy fresh out of the Yaki Military Academy, and Helmsman of the Scurvy Dervish began frantically shouting at us upon our exit from the North Gate into Pontifex Realm. The Dervish suddenly engaged its boosters and started cork screwing through space… Which caused the artificial gravity to momentarily weaken…

Before I knew it I was picking myself up after getting tossed into a wall near the main strategic terminal. I had been examining the fleet movements of the Boron military remnants in the border sectors near Paranid space on the Dervishes holo-map.

Note to self: Get the snipes on the gravity generators ASAP.

"EASY IKKO!!" I shouted at the boy…

"SIR! Gravidar has positive contact on one... make that two Paranid Corvettes closing in on our last position!" Old Gray Stone barked while running a hand through the unshaven gray stubble on his chin in a considering fashion.

"Alright boys..." A sharp look from Hoshi made me include... "...and girls, get me comms."

"Set condition red throughout the ship, battle stations, I repeat, all to battle stations."

"Ikko, bring us in on the lead M6." "Gray, coordinate all gunners on point defense, I don't want any surprises." "Aiden, take forward cannon control.”

"Yes sir!" my bridge crew said nearly in unison as we started burning toward the lead M6, it was a dozen klicks out from the second, there should have been enough time...

BOOM! The explosion from a missile salvo of unidentified configuration tore into the shields of the Scurvy Dervish right as we started unloading all forward cannons into the Paranid Corvette.

"All gunners, Missile Defense!" I shouted, hearing my order echo from Gray.

"Hoshi, what was that?"

"Scanners show a positive reading on nuclear material, likely Hammerhead configuration. If our gunners had not of shot that down we would be dead."

"Keep all turrets on missile defense exclusively." "Begin strafing maneuver Alpha-12."

The battle was heating up fast… we had the first corvette down to 40% shields when another missile alert came. Ikko strafed around our target while keeping our main cannons pounding into it, and more importantly keeping a screen between us and the source of those missiles. That second M6 was packing some serious heat.

"Captain! One M3, and three M4 class Paranid fighters heading our way!" Hoshi shouted from the science station where she was watching the sector activity. Ikko adjusted his flying tactics as he struggled to keep the enemy vessel between us and a deadly nuclear payload. The second corvette started moving straight for us launching more missiles; our gunners knocked most of them down right before they slammed into us. Hoshi said they were of a lesser configuration, at least the blast waves didn't fry our shields that time, much, damn seekers moved right around the ship we were hammering into and came straight for us.

“Call in our fighter support.” I said as I quickly calculated the time it would take for them to get here versus the time it would take for those fighters to close range. Just enough time, it has to be.

The Dervish continued to use her greater maneuverability to her advantage as Ikko kept moving us out of the line of fire. Then the second enemy vessel crept towards us maneuvering around his partner getting us back into its line of fire...

In a hail of green plasma our lead ship, the Holy Corvette "Priest's Might" exploded in a bright flash before snuffing out in the vacuum of space. The Unholy Demons sped through the explosion straight toward us... 6km...5km...4km... "For High Priest Xaar!" I shouted as I activated the final Hammerhead class nuclear missile I had been outfitted with for this divine mission. "I fired... and white light consumed me as my soul left through my third eye into the Great Void of Infinity...."

"Gray!! All forward turrets, Missile Defense!"

I shouted the order then stood there watching the view screen in horror as the fire from our turrets shot down the Hammerhead. "It's too close, no way, we're all dead..." was the only thing that went through my mind… The giant shockwave consumed the Paranid Nemesis and spread outwards directly toward us...

"Captain! Captain!! Captain!!!" "CAN YOU HEAR US?" "How many fingers am I holding up??"

Ugh "Very funny Ikko, just one..." "Damage report...?"

Dare I ask after that…? The Scurvy Dervish is the most high tech vessel of her class that the Yaki has ever put into service. But… could she really have been able to stand that without some serious hull damage?

"Aye Cap'n, surprisingly the shields held at 2%... but some damage on the hull across the bottom of Deck 1 where the blast wave hit first. We're going to need to be in dry dock for a few hours hammering the dings out." Gray said after examining the Damage Controls console.

“What happened?” I asked with my head still ringing from the near-impact.

“I’ll tell ya what bloody happened, that damn suicidal three eyed monstrosity sent us flying end over end for nearly 10 klicks. Luckily Infinite Sorrows came when she did; the Stooges wiped the Paranid fighters out of existence, the fireworks were amazing. Just in time too, we had no shields o‘course.” Gray chuckled sounding half amused, half angry, a dangerous combination for him, especially after drinking Yaki made booze.

“No time to visit the shipyard, the Paranid are up to something big, like I said in the briefing… Yaki intelligence reports they have a large mind washing operation going on, we have no time to spare.”

“Captain… You do know this had to have been a trap, right?”

”I know Aiden, what’s your point?”

“What do you think they will have waiting for us at our destination?” he said before shrugging then turning to walk over to the helms view screen to get a better look at the wreckage. “They will most likely be angry at us…” I couldn’t help but smile.

I was exasperated though, we haven’t even gotten to our mission objective yet, and we have already taken a bit of a beating. First control over sentient beings using slave chips, and now hypno-chemical mind washing... It is a threat to the whole galaxy much less the Yaki. We can’t let this happen if we have any chance of overthrowing Xaar before the machines make their move.

“Spool up the Jump Drive, set course for Trinity Sanctum.”

Jump Drive Charging…

Shift..

This is more work than I thought trying to keep up with the writing and still have time to play! Fear not though, I am nearly caught up to where I am in game, and once I am things will be smooth sailing.

By the way, if anyone sees any continuity/grammar/logical errors, or anything that seems off feel free to call them out so I can do something about it. :)

Also if anyone has any constructive criticism I would love to hear it, this is good writing practice for me.

I turned off Race response fleets, it became too hard to "privateer" with it on. I may turn it on when/if I get my own capital ship.

"We nearly didn't make it through that blockade…” Chortled Hoshi while she twirled a pen between her fingers... “Do you think we lost them?”

"Indeed, no gravidar contact for a good ten mizura. More importantly they didn't get a good look at us when we came through. These new ECM drones did the trick perfectly for blinding their IFF's."

"Now that we are here and in the green we need to begin looking for that facility. Hoshi, how did the sector list look upon entry?"

"Incoming IFF signals included two TL class freighters, one Paranid Casino, and one Arena."

"It has to be the casino." "It has to be the arena."

Hoshi and Aiden both spoke the same time, they glanced at each other with considering looks before turning to me. Naturally where all the hard decisions fall... “It could be either one, it seems obvious that one or possibly both are decoys. We just have to wait and see what we have on our hands. Without running a bio scan on both we have no way of knowing, and if we get close enough to do that they may jump away."

"It is a quandary" Hoshi said faintly, seemingly deep in thought. "How about if we use a captured Paranid fighter to do the scanning?" "We just sent two to the shipyard for gutting, I am sure we can get one back temporarily."

"Hmm..." I mumbled, considering the idea, it might just work.

"Hoshi, do you think you can set up a bio-mask to fool their sensors into believing it's a mind washed Paranid flying the ship though?"

"It might take some time but yes, it is possible."

Excellent then, do your magic on the Gate network and get us in contact with Infinite Sorrows."

"Yessir" she smiled as she skittered away back to the science station to begin the hack.

"This is Captain Sebastian Gauge calling Infinite Sorrows, do you copy?"

"This is Captain Isao Katsu, good to hear from you Sebastian.”

“You too Isao…” I paused running the plan through my head one last time.

“So, did you just call up to say hi, or did you have something for me to do?”

“Smartass, in fact yes, we need you to jump back to Senators Badlands and pick up one of those Vanguard Space-Otters we dropped off yesterday, looks like a Yaki will be flying one after all…..”
I could hear him laughing on the other end of the comms, we had known each other since our early academy days. He likes to remind me of how I had to fly a re-outfitted Perseus Vanguard for nearly five months during advanced combat training. The thing stunk permanently of incense and something that can only be described as…unholy……

“Anyway, yes, go get the thing and bring it to Pontifex’ Realm, North gate mind, we don’t want them getting suspicious.” “Once you are in sector deploy ECM drones and get well out of range of any Paranid sensors. We will meet you there at the uploaded coordinates.”

“Yes sir!” He said in a tone that made it so I couldn’t tell if he was being completely serious or not. I am going to have to get him back the next time we meet up back home for R&R, not that kind though sadly, just Repair and Resupply before heading back out into hostile space.

“We beat Infinite Sorrows to the rendezvous point by a good 15 Mizura.” That old tub is fast but not nearly as fast as the Dervish.

“Alright, we’re here, now are you going to tell me what is going on?” Isao laughed as he walked up to me. We grasped each others wrists in the traditional Yaki fashion of respect and salutation before sitting down in the ready room aboard the Dervish.

“We have a big target to hit, the Paranid have constructed a mind washing facility that is larger than any that has been discovered and destroyed to date. Spies reported that today this facility will contain dignitaries and civilians from all five major civilizations. If they are converted then all may be lost.” From there Hoshi took over and explained the plan in greater detail, and in no time at all we were on our way back to Trinity Sanctum. A brave Yaki-born Paranid named Esterasshar in the cockpit of our captured Perseus Vanguard leading the way. The scanning filter was in place to make it look like he had been mind washed. All will go according to plan… I hope……

We temporarily dubbed our Paranid fighter “Twisted Humor” and gave Esterasshar a five mizura head start before we initiated our Jump drives and headed for Trinity Sanctum behind it. By the time we got there the ugly little ship had already blended into the crowd, and we once again had a chase on our hands.

“Rear gunners, fire across the leaders bow, cook that cockpit.” Growled Gray Stone across the intercom as we sped away from the gate with a squad of Paranid Military M5’s right on our tails. In a hail of hyper accelerated exotic particles the lead fighter broke off with ~70% hull intact, its escorts following it away. Some sped ahead to get out of range of our main cannons which we had brought to bear after they broke attack formation. Soon after we were well beyond scanner range of the Paranid, and free to hunt down our objective.

“Esterasshar, how is it coming?”

“Sir, I am closing in on The Duke’s Luck, the Paranid Casino, I already scanned the Arena, and it showed nothing out of the ordinary. No passengers.”

Hoshi glanced over at Aiden but he was not paying attention, he seemed lost in his own thoughts. I wondered what he was thinking…

“So, the Arena was the decoy… Then why does something still feel fishy about this mission? All Boron present excluded of course…” Aiden said wryly.

“I don’t know… I am sure we will find out…” Now that I look back on it, I can’t believe I had been so stupid. I KNEW it was a trap, yet my curiosity and arrogance blinded me to the fact that I might not be able to handle what was to come. Our destruction of that Terran frigate made me cocky, and careless. Live and learn I guess…

“Excellent, notify us when you have results, radio silence till then, Dervish out.”

The mizura stretched by as he closed in on the Paranid Casino-turned-Zombie production facility-turned-Embassy.

“Captain, I have something, it looks like it is Jump drive equipped, and carrying over 3,500 people, men, women, and child life signs detected from all five commonwealth races.”

“Alright, return back to Infinite Sorrows, you did great Esterashaar.”

“Yes sir” he said as he gunned it back towards the rendezvous point.

After he was clear I ordered the Dervish to Jump to the Pontifex’ realm gate and start the race towards The Duke’s Luck. As soon as we left the event horizon we came under heavy fire from a fighter wing that we dispatched easily, and we soon again had a clear gravidar. The Scurvy Dervish flew through space like a torpedo straight at our objective… The plan was simple; try the easy way first, then strip its shields and order it to surrender computer control to us. If that failed we would board and take the facility by force. Once under our control we had planned to jump it immediately into Ocracoke's Storm where we could better assess the mental condition of those on board. After that, if they were all clean we would have sent them all off on a one way trip to Ringo Moon to let the Argon deal with the fallout for now. Plans rarely go that smoothly, this plan no exception, we were headed straight for disaster and tragedy without even realizing it.

“Captain! Gravidar shows a single Paranid Odysseus closing in on our position, 25.6 km out and closing in at 48 m/s, ETA 8 mizura. Shouted Hoshi as her hands moved swiftly across the control panel in front of her, no doubt running trajectory and velocity analysis.

“That should be just enough time… Ikko, take us in weapons range of The Duke’s Luck. We have time for one warning volley, if there’s no positive response we have to strip those shields, and fast.

Aiden took up the headset next to his station and began opening up a channel to the civilian vessel. “This is the Scurvy Dervish ordering your immediate surrender. Deactivate all firewall software for systems override. You have five sezura to comply.”

“Paranid do not know fear.” Was the only response.

“Alright, all forward cannons active, take those shields down, we’re ganna board the bastu.”

“Yessir. All marines, prepare for EVA deployment, you know the target, you know the plan. Get to it you starry eyed space dogs!” Gray barked the order over the intercom as he went over the best route of attack through the ships decks one last time at the tactical station. We had no time to waste on getting lost down a wrong corridor; those Paranid capital ships are like labyrinths.

“Captain the Destroyer is 19km and closing. I don’t know if they are going to make it in time. Should we pull them back?”

“Of course not, we need this operation to succeed.”

“We’re in position, all marines, deploy!” At my command the marines left the rear hatch and began floating toward the ship. I looked down at my gravidar, that damn M2 is getting closer, 15km now. We might not make it…

“Sir, we are meeting heavy resistance!” Major Amanda Takai screamed over the sound of weapons fire, and lots of it. “We have taken command decks 1 through 4, we are still making our way to the computer core.” “We have taken causalities, it’s a mess in here captain, what are your orders?”

Right as I was about to order her team to continue pressing through the ship I looked over and dropped the comm to the floor. Ten, no twenty, thirty… I lost count of all the globs of photon pulse fire that headed straight for us….No…..Not for us……For The Duke’s Luck… All those people…

“GET OUT OF THERE MAJOR!! MOVE! MOVE! MOVE! HEAVY FIRE INCOMING!!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs after scooping the mic back up from the floor.

“We can’t, we are surrounded, we have to fight our way out.”

“Move your ass marine!” I shouted but it was too late…Paranid hull plating began to melt under the super-heated photon blasts; I could hear the screams of my marines, Yaki marines being burned alive over the comm system. The entire plan going to Hades, and there was nothing to do but watch as their engine core went critical, causing an explosion that tore The Duke’s Luck asunder before sending a secondary blast wave that incinerated almost all remains of the once massive ship. “All those people…” I thought again before snapping back into my position.

“Get us out of here Ikko! Evasive pattern Alpha-2.”

“Captain, sector readout shows multiple Jump points forming, one Deimos, and ten Nemesis class corvettes have entered the sector. Sir, it’s the Hammer of Light…” Hoshi began frantically typing something at her station when a booming voice came over the comm. system.

“This is Superior Being calling Unholy Demons aboard the Scurvy Dervish, by the authority of Holy Commander Artazetyuh of the Hammer of Light we order you to surrender.” The Hammer launched its fighters and they headed straight for us. 23 Km and closing…

“Not likely…. Captain, permission to launch EMP drones.”

“Launch what?!”

“Electro-magnetic-pulse drones, I have been working on their development in my spare time, they work on the principle of…”

“Excellent! Launch! Launch!” I interrupted before she could start lecturing, I knew what an EMP was, that brilliant woman, this just might work.

I ordered a comm channel open to the Paranid light carrier… “Sorry Arty, no can do, you see if we did that then you might be mean to us!” “Close comm channels, block all incoming communications from them, and get us the frak out of here.”

A squad of five drones flew in a tight V formation through space toward the group of incoming fighters. Four broke off and dove underneath the incoming ships, the lead one remained on course heading straight for them…in a flash of blue light the single drone was gone and there were six Perseus heavy fighters floating lifelessly in space with their computer systems fried. The four remaining drones zoomed straight for the Odysseus and the flagship of Commander Artazetyuh…

“We are taking heavy fire stern at 5 o'clock!" Hoshi shouted over to Ikko and he deftly maneuvered out of the way and into a course that would take us out of their weapons range.

"Spool up the Jump drive, set course for Shore of Infinity, there is something we need to check out before we head home for R&R.” As I gave the order four blue bursts of light shone off in the distance.

Shift..

“Your Holiness…” One Gathetbuntu, Chief Officer under Commander Artazetyuh started with a tone very unlike the one he displayed to the demons earlier when he demanded their surrender. “We are nearly finished replacing the damaged computer core components. The technicians estimate the Hammer will be fully functional within the hour.”

“Good..good… Leave now, prepare the command deck for my return.” Artazetyuh, Holy Commander of the Hammer of Light and third Gatar to Priest Duke Pontifex Maximus Paranidia, stood watching the repairs from the upper deck of engineering. How could this have happened? He thought to himself. The plan was flawless, the enemy was all but defeated. Then he remembered the sight he saw upon entering Trinity Sanctum... The Chariot of Dawn, sending salvo after salvo directly toward The Duke’s Luck. When he questioned Commander Tarahemhoat about it the wretch claimed it was a targeting malfunction. What orders could he have had that would go over MY head? The problem remained on his mind until the repairs were finished. Then only one thought process entertained him, revenge on the Scurvy Dervish.

“SITREP, what the hell happened?” I exclaimed as I stormed onto the CIC, apparently we came out of the wrong gate in the wrong sector. “Where are we?”

“Captain we have just exited the Trinity Sanctum gate into Preachers Refuge.” Great, just as Hoshi said it I knew we were in trouble. You know that feeling you get when something bad is about to happen and you know there is nothing you can do to stop it?

“There’s something else… More than an hour has passed since we entered hyperspace.”

“Impossible.”

“If these readouts are correct it seems as we were spooling up the Jump drive the rift opened through a black hole causing our singularity slope tension converter to malfunction…Orders Cap’n?” Hoshi suddenly looked down at her panel with intense scrutiny. “Wait…Multiple Gravidar contacts, IFF signature confirms, it’s the Hammer, and he has brought some friends, two Heavy Nemesis class corvettes, 7 km and closing.”

“Full forward thrusters, get us some room to breath.” I replied while examining the holographic readout of the sector at the tactical station. “Turn us around, skirt the edge of the Nem on the port side, let’s see if we can get them to break formation.”

“Sir they are launching fighters, we are outgunned, I estimate an 86% chance of the Dervish being obliterated if all their firepower hits us directly.” Hoshi sometimes gets on my nerves with her perpetual statistical analyses of our impending deaths.

“Ikko, bring us around again, get some more distance. Gray, ready all forward turrets for point defense. Hoshi get…” I was quickly cut off by the bright explosion in front of us as one of the Paranid fighters blew up, through the explosion flew an ugly little space-otter flown by an even uglier space-dog.

“Captain, having all the fun without me? Paranid is displeased.” Esterasshar laughed over the comm system. “Now hurry and beam me out of here before too much fun is had at my expense.”

And so we did… As his molecules were being reconstructed on the CIC’s transporter platform a red light flashed on my command console. Wow, “Twisted Humor” gave an automated alert signal that it was set on a collision course for the Hammer of Light…That crazy son of a spacefly has more guts than brains.

“Get us out of here, head for the gate to Shore of Infinity, it should be somewhere to the East… Look! There, behind that asteroid! Ikko, gun it!”

Typically if an image is too big it will be removed and replaced with a link by one of the mods. I suspect you'll get at least one warning before they shut a thread down, they're not quite that arbitrary ;)

I have to admit, I wasn't sure about this when I read your first post Neeros, but I'm finding myself increasingly enthralled. Your shameless fleecing of techno babble appeals to my inner geek, which is always a good thing! :p I find I am now eagerly awaiting the next updates. Very good stuff indeed :D

Sector: Shore of Infinity – Boron Border
Location: CIC of the Scurvy Dervish – Exiting the West Gate

“Alright, we are finally at our last stop. Boron military activity in this border space has been rarer and rarer due to the Split-Boron conflict… till recently. We need to make contact somehow and assess the situation before we can figure out what is really going on here.” If there is any chance of coordinating with them…

“Captain, Sector list shows a single Boron M6, and four Boron M3’s closing fast… Captain, we are being hailed, it is the M6, a video feed Sir.” Great, I had hoped to make contact on less hostile terms.

“Put them up on auxiliary view screen one.”

“This is Imperial Knight-Guardian Kala Amaria, you have entered Boron controlled space, leave immediately or be obliterated. The unhol… *spluttering sound* Leave immediately!”

I was shocked, up until that point I had never seen nor heard of a Boron behaving in such a way. Even at their worst they are at least polite…Plus we had always gotten along to some degree or another. The only Yaki that have attacked them are the ones who have split off from our society in favor of a more….direct means of living. Maybe this is part of the answer…and what was that about unhol…frak!

“Lead ship is firing! Ikko! Evasive maneuvers!” Aiden called out in warning right as the ion pulse hit us. “If they want a fight we will give them one…” They didn’t even give us a chance to reply…what is going on here…could it be?

“Sir, a single Recon Pegasus has just jumped through the gate… and the Boron are moving to engage. I estimate a…”

Damn, outnumbered again, our shields are dropping fast under their ion weaponry. No choice… Our rear turret shot towards the Pegasus but too late, it turned and jumped back out…Not good…

“Aiden, call up Infinite Sorrows, tell them we need fighter support ASAP. Gray, get all forward cannons firing on that M6. Aim for their weapons then propulsion, try and disable them if at all possible… Ikko, keep us alive.” I added the last just to make sure he was serious, all too often he has a tendency to forget this is real life; not some space simulator back at the academy.

The explosion of the Hydra class corvette sent our shields down to 20%. Sparks flew from half the consoles and lights in the CIC due to the electrical damage we sustained. The entire ship shook like a concussion bomb went off in its belly… “Get us out of here Ikko!” The four Boron fighters were slowly chipping away at what remained of our shields, all seemed lost. Our turrets were having tracking issues and the snipes reported they couldn’t figure out what was wrong.

The ionized feedback accumulating in the shield projectors were causing a plasma storm around the Dervish. The hair on my arms stood on end and I looked around thinking that this really was our last stop…

“This is engineering, calling the bridge.” What now… “Talk, fast Tayu.”

“We are still having trouble with the turrets but we managed to reroute power from the main energy grid into the shields, I don’t know how long they will last though…”

Specialist Tayu Sohjin sounded as nervous as you would expect from someone having a near death experience. I looked over in time to see Hoshi run over to the airlock and sprint out of the CIC towards the turbolift. I muttered an oath under my breath and just hoped that she could do something to help down there.

“This is Infinite Sorrows calling the Scurvy Dervish, head towards our signal, we got your back.” As the message boomed over the Dervish’s speaker system the Stooges zoomed past us close enough to scrape some paint and began engaging the enemy wing.

White hot streams of raw plasma flowed out from the front of the Yaki fighters while they went straight for the Boron Fighter-Craft. The leader of the four Royal Boron Guardians began to chant passionately over and over on the intercom connecting the four ships together. “For High Priest Xaar!” And the following pilots responded in turn. Even as they chanted the fluid in their encounter suits began to boil as their cockpits quickly rose to extreme temperatures. Boron Royal Guardian Krat Harl was the first to hit his eject button even as he passed from this life into the Deep Sea Beyond…

“Damage report?” I called to Hoshi when I realized we were all still alive and in one piece.

Over the comm system I could hear Hoshi yell as something quite heavy seemed to have dropped onto her foot.

“Those slime headed Bastus fried our secondary computer mainframe!! Not to mention about half our electronic warfare capabilities are totally shot… Not to mention we will be lucky to even make the jump back to drydock!!!!” Hoshi looked as mad as I had ever seen her. You can shoot our shields, you can put plasma burns on our hull….just never touch our electronics or engines while Lieutenant Commander Hoshi Ara is stationed on this ship...She visibly fumed as she worked at getting some of the more critical systems operational again.

“Well, it could be worse I suppose. Let’s start salvage operations on these fighters. They will provide invaluable Intel on what is going on with the Boron in these border sectors. Transport the survivor directly into the infirmary, and send two marines to keep watch. If he wakes up we should be able to get more answers than the black boxes on the fighters will give.”

Three out of the four Barracudas were in fair shape, Hoshi estimated that around 60% hull was intact. The fourth however was broken down to nearly nothing, I am still not sure what was holding the thing together actually. I ordered a mosquito launched and the thing popped out of existence before it could slow down the operation.

We overrode what was left of the remaining three fighters and they began the limp back to Infinite Sorrows. “Hoshi, send a signal to Isao, have them put gold wing on carrier protection duty while they wait to ferry those barracuda’s home.” Luckily one of those suicidal squids survived, we had to get to the bottom of this. Just as Hoshi got back to her station her eyes popped and her jaw dropped open momentarily.

“Sir! Gravidar contact, coming from the West Gate, 31km and closing.” We were near the middle of the sector next to Infinite Sorrows performing an underway replenishment on our energy reserves. “I don’t believe it…Sir, the Hammer is back!”

“Damn!! We need to give those fighters time to dock, move to intercept!”

The boosters on the Dervish engaged and we began flying towards The Hammer of Light, as we got closer I wondered if we could actually pull this off. “Ikko, strafing maneuver Alpha-4, keep us close and fast.” The Dervish began flying circles around the Hammer while pouring High Energy Plasma bolts into its shields the whole time. Not enough, we were taking heavy incendiary bomb fire…Our shields yet again dropping swiftly. 90% … 70% … 40% …

“Sir they are launching fighters!” Before I could give the order Ikko beat me to it. He engaged boosters and sent us wildly strafing and rolling back towards Infinite Sorrows.

“IBL fire 70m Ster..!” Before Hoshi could finish shouting Ikko had sent us into a bucking maneuver tilting the bow forward and sliding us to starboard before correcting the ship back out. The Incendiary bomb missed our stern by less than a meter, and Ikko set us speeding forward again. Damn, but the kid can fly…

“Get Gold Wing over here, it’s our only chance!” I yelled over the comm to Isao, perhaps a little louder than was strictly necessary, but can you really blame me? We came all this way and I was desperate for Intel, this had to succeed.

“This is Gold-1 standing by awaiting orders Captain.”

“Jimi, get the Stooges into that soup, we need to give those ‘cudas more time to dock.” Isao gave the order wondering just how insane Sebastian was when he woke up this morning… Sending Jimi, Kate, and Varash into that crap…

“Gold-1 to Gold Wing, follow me in, keep tight, stay frosty.”

The three Susanowa’s screamed past the cluster of Paranid fighters, laying a wall of fire out before them… Paranid pilots screamed over open comms as they died. The Hammer was sending out a hail of incendiary fire towards the Yaki pilots but they evaded every shot.

Their shields are holding, good.
100%, 100%, 95%.

“Fan out, break their line!” Gold-1 flew up and over the Hammer in a tight orbit before flying straight towards an incoming Perseus. A second Paranid M3 followed Gold-1 around yet failed to follow when Jimi Faraday pulled up; sending the two Paranid pilots colliding into each other. Meanwhile Gold-2 and 3 broke into opposite directions splitting the rest of the enemy wing up.

Off in the distance I could see the battle magnified through the view screen. Munitions of every color flew in every direction. I listened transfixed to the comm chatter of the three skilled pilots as they danced around the enemy fleet. They coordinated with each other like a single unified entity. My mind wandered momentarily… There is a strange beauty to battle, like a dance of death lead by an orchestra of fate. Would today end with fate in our favor?

“Take thisssss filthhh off my tail!!” Varash Aka’tar Jeuntar III screamed as he slid through space suddenly reversing direction to let the following M4 fly past. Gold-2 flew past as well sending green and blue bolts pounding into the interceptor till it spun off wildly before collapsing into itself. “Thankssssss…”

“Haha Spacedust.” Kate Hale celebrated the kill with a cheer as she spun back around and headed into the thick of the battle with a slightly crispy Gold-3 following closely. “

The battle raged on for what seemed forever, it was a minor miracle that none of Gold wing had been destroyed yet. They were slowing down the incoming Deimos but it was still coming closer…Luck wouldn’t last much longer; we needed to move, fast.

“Gold-2 reports she ‘as been hit Cap’n, she do ‘ave only 40% shields remaining..” Old Gray Stone sounded more than slightly on edge, he had formed quite a bond with those three in such a short time, I think they remind him of his fighter-jock days.

“Recall all fighters, are those damn Barracudas docked yet?”

“Nearly, the last Vanguard just hit the outer markers.”

“Sir, Gold wing is still under heavy fire, they are making their way towards us, 11.34km and closing.” Hoshi was counting every meter. “The last Barracuda is docked, orders?” She said suddenly.

“Have them jump back to Senators Badlands, dump the fighters adrift, and get back here as fast as humanly possible. Gold wing doesn’t have much time…” At this point I was nearly at the point of biting my nails. This is cutting it way to close, even for us. They are nearly in weapons range…

“This is Infinite Sorrows! Recall Gold wing!”

When I heard Isao over the comm channel we were using I felt some of the tension starting to drain from my bones.

“YES!” We all screamed at once.

The Stooges left the fight and started the race back towards their home base. The Hammer of Light was just entering weapons range and began spewing IBL fire at both us and Infinite Sorrows as it pulled up next to us. We could take a few shots but not them...

“This is Captain Isao, Gold wing recalled.” Just as gold wing was beaming back into their hanger bays I ordered them to jump home.

“Engage forward thrusters, defensive pattern Alpha-6. Hoshi, Spool up the Jump Drive; set course for Savage Spur. We need to give them a screen against that IBL fire till they jump.”

I wasn’t sure we were even going to make it back to Savage Spur, much less Yaki space. Our Jump drive was giving us a navigation panel full of error readouts, and the ships main power was fluctuating on and off leaving only the emergency lights on to guide us through the CIC… Our shield projectors were nearly shot… Incendiary fire began melting our hull right through it's severely weakened shields. Death comes to all eventually, but not this day....

“Hail him Hoshi, lets see what is going on.” Aiden said, in command while the Captain was in sickbay getting treated for ion burns.

“This is Commander Aiden Nguyen of the Scurvy Dervish, what can we help you with this fine evening?” Aiden said, feeling slightly exhilarated by the day’s events.

“This is Hali Pa of Jormunder, immediate assistance required. Three Paranid super freighters spotted north of here, mission unknown, I was ordered to engage, my ship was severely damaged by a swarm of fighter drones they released. It is up to you now. Stop them before they get away!”

“Good work on capturing that SF Aiden, I have no idea what they were thinking coming that deep into Yaki controlled space but… It’s our gain I suppose.” "Hoshi, when the repairs are done meet me in Medlab 6, our Boron friend has woken up." As she turned away I remembered to ask.. "By the way, how much did we earn?"

“The Shipyard has reimbursed us 3,084,063 Cr for the three Barracudas and 724,932 Cr for the Super Freighter. We were also credited 621,663cr for the mission we completed when Hali Po was disabled. This brings our total account to 27,965,246 Credits to put towards the war effort. The Boron fighters have already been shipped off to The Hand of GoD where they can be examined for intel…” Hoshi rattled off all the economic figures and degrees of proft margin that would be relevant to our mission. My mind wandered to The Hand of GoD, one of the Yaki Navy's ten most powerful Carriers is also our most advanced mobile research station. If anyone can crack the Boron black-boxes it is them…What was that about the Yaki citizen tax raise?

“Good, good, we need every credit of it if we are going to keep expanding.” The Yaki system of military varies vastly from the commonwealth in most respects, however one thing is still the same. We are obligated to pay for…or find our own supplies.

Bureaucracy is bureaucracy no matter what backwater planet you travel to…

Kirlack is correct. There will be a warning, but if they are links you will have no problem. The only thread I have seen shutdown, the OP had placed 20 or 30 high res pictures inline before the mods noticed. He was not willing to move them and insert links.

Sorry for the lack of detail in my first post.

Great story, but try not to make it a quick funeral. (7% shields is cutting it close)
