Solar tsunami expected on 3rd of August, 2010

Post by BeidAmmikon »

Tsunami, you say? All hands, brace for impact! And get your Faraday cages at the ready.
Nasa scientists braced for 'solar tsunami' to hit earth (The Telegraph)
The sun sends a charged cloud hurtling our way (New Scientist)
""What wonderful fireworks the Sun has been producing,” the UK solar expert said.
“This was a very rare event – not one, but two almost simultaneous eruptions from different locations on the sun were launched toward the Earth."

You're gonna see "wonderful" when the appliances will start to fail all around the house
I'll be happy to share the possible experience - if not auroras, maybe the stories about my computer crashing several times during this "wonderful" day...

Wait, this is what makes vista not work! The effects travel backwards in time!

On a more serious note here's a clip of the sun:

Around 2:00 in it looks like the ejection though I'm not certain. It's rather pretty in an SPF 1 trillion sort of way.

September has come early in Germany. All the clouds will do in respect to the solar storm is block any view of aurora if there are any at this latitude. Saw some in Iceland a few years back and it was incredible. I'll be phoning some relatives in Scotland tonight telling them to get outside.

Well, it's currently overcast in my part of the UK, which is about par for the course really - any chance of seeing any kind of aerial phenomena in the sky in the UK and it's overcast and grey!! Especially where I live!

Depends on where you are. The further north, the more likely you will be to see aurora. I don't know if the south will be as lucky in their winter. I've not heard anything more accurate than 'Britain' and 'Northern America' being mentioned as possible areas to see them from.

:o Is "memory parity check error" or something on those lines, bad?
I wonder if I'm next  Where do you find driver updates for that?

Look on the bright side - there will be boosted consumer demand for all the out of warranty appliances that have just been fried.

Plus, more casual work for technical fix-it sort of blokes.

The solar events aren't strong enough to interfere with communications or any electronics. I seriously doubt they'd be strong enough to cause a Tsunami, but some of you still have a few hours until midnight don't you. :P

Actually, strong enough Coronal Mass Ejections aimed at us have the potential to cause several billion dollars worth of damage. We've not had one in living memory, but one struck when the telegraph system was in place and downed it for a while.

Info on potentially damaging sun storms
edit: Found info on the 1859 solar 'superstorm'

As for the 'Tsunami', I think they were describing what was happening on the sun. No, the solar activity won't cause a Tsunami on earth.

I shall be hiding my eyes from the skies. If the Triffids escape, I don't want to be blind! :D

I hope my precious satellites survive it ... I do not want to go to work on wednesday and nothing left to take care of. :)
... what is a drop of rain, compared to the storm? ... what is a thought, compared to the mind? ... our unity is full of wonder which your tiny individualism cannot even conceive ... I've heard it all before ... you're saying nothing new ... I thought I saw a rainbow ... but I guess it wasn't true ... you cannot make me listen ... I cannot make you hear ... you find your way to heaven ... I'll meet you when you're there ...

Be wary of the Aurora... supposedly it can make people vanish.

Seen it do some really weird stuff, though that was over ten years ago. The dormant phase must have been a coincidence. Nothing to worry about now.

"memory parity check error"
Oh oh.
