[Guide] A little advice on placing turrets on your ship

Post by Killjaeden »

In addition to my custom turret tutorial i decided to make a seperate Guide for turretplacement.

This should be read my everyone who wants to create his own ship and isn't familiar with turrets ingame. Especially beginners should read this since some ship-turret design-combinations should be avoided in X3 because they don't look/work good.

I tried to make it very eye-friendly and put a few pictures in it - so not just dusty text ;)

I hope you like it and if you have any ideas how to improve this feel free to contact me :)
Feedback much appreciated. If you have questions or problems you can ask here too of course.

@ Killjaeden

You put up the wrong link for file-upload. With your link it would be possible for everyone to delete your file.

@ Everyone

THIS is the correct link for file-upload.

Great guide!

thank you for this guide it will very useful to when getting the ship i want in game, would i be pushing my luck if were ask unbelievably nicely whether i could have a copy of your customer turrets to use on the ship I'm trying to complete? they are perfect for my ship and as far as 3dsmax goes i am a compete noob at it, the ship I'm editing is already meshed and textured and this is for my own personal use, I'm not looking to rip them off and take credit for them, the stock turrets kind of suck and are unsuitable for this ship, at the moment the ship has the MM6 turrets and it look really rare, lol

Now if only the Egosoft modelers had read that guide back when they created all those ships. =)

What model do you talk about? The one i used in this guide or the one i used in my turret-tutorial?
Those 2 in the guide are standard egosoft (bigturret_dummy and bigturret4_dummy)

I'll release the custom model i made as a ressource/mod anyway, it will be released in the next version of my ressource/mod, Shipexpansion wich will be released after the release of 2.5

The single biggest improvement for top/bottom turrets would be if you took the standard turrets and only altered the mounting plate (nothing else!) so it doesn't sit below the turret but behind it.
Ideally the mounting plate itself should have a bit more vertical depth, too, so it's easier to attach it to slanted surfaces. (goddamn boron ships)

Then you could place top/bottom turrets without any trouble.

If you look at current cap ships like Odin or Phoenix, their top/bottom turrets are placed more or less correctly.
Took me quite a bit of work to arrange them like that (Turret Fix mod) and in many cases (Phoenix) it's not a perfect fit, either.
There are very few ships (Odin) which had the perfect surfaces to attach "normal" top/bottom turrets to.

actually on the subject of custom turrets, has anyone made a more authentic turret for the Daedalus, and by that what i mean is they are basically, do you know the capsules used for medicine, basically half of one of those with the weapon inside, actually think along the lines of a ground based telescope, you know with the dome which can rotate and has the up down axis through a slot in the dome.

Suppositories with guns? Sounds rather painful.

? That would look silly imo. I found those turrets ugly in any way... the 'new' turrets bigturret4 and 5 used on terran ships are a bit better though but they suffer the same 'design' problem.
They are not suitable for top/bottom even if you reposition the mounting plate. I tried to figure what you mean exactly:

i think you meant the lower version, the top version isn't possible at all (off centre rotation - look at my custom turret tutorial for pictures)

that's how it would look:

kann man glaub ich in die tonne klopfen
my suggestion: forget about those fugly tiny wannabe laser and create your own :P

Yes, the lower version is exactly what I meant.

They may not be pretty but they would be a huge improvement for the usual top/bottom turrets because their mounting plates would no longer have to hang out there in open space.

Try to mount the upper version on the vertical surface instead...

I had to sink many top/bottom turrets into the ship's hull so that only the tip of the lasers would stick out. (boron ships)
Not ideal but it beats a laser that is mounted on... vacuum.

if you already do such an improvement (which requires 3d-modifikation) it's better to improve the body if you want to keep the look.
You may have noticed the 'unfinished' bottomside of the turret on pic 2.
beside the strange look, the hole and unneeded end at the 'arc'-middleframe
Not ideal but it beats a laser that is mounted on... vacuum.
mee i wouldn't work on something to be 'not ideal' *g*
I'm a perfectionist :D

Lazy Turret

I'm not sure this is this most appropriate thread to post this in but it seems about the best I can find with the forum search.

I'm importing my model into X3:TC and (after a bit of struggle and some excellent tutorials) I've managed to get it into the game and working fine...aside from the turret.

My ship is basically a TP so I used the Express Hauler to check the size and grab camera/turret dummies. I moved the turret so it's sitting right on the very front of my ship and, after tearing my hair out trying to figure out what I'd done wrong with the camera dummies, I've finally managed to get the two views behaving as they should. The trouble is the turret just sits there and will not fire, either manually or automatically though I did manage to fit a single gun to it.

I've probably missed a really obvious step but it's probably so obvious I'm not going to think of it myself. I've resisted running for help this far but I'm really stuck on this one.

Also, can someone confirm how you determine how many weapons you can mount in a turret? presumably you just use a different cockpit but I'm not sure.
