Some tips (may or may not help u):
-- Disable onboard audio from BIOS if u have X-Fi running on PCI/PCI-E.
-- If ur board has onboard graphics, either disable it (if possible) or set PCI-E/AGP to preferred or "poll first", if u use another PCI-E/AGP graphics card.
-- If u have >2GB RAM on 32-bit Windows, try this MSDN tweak
-- If ur TC goes crazy, hit ALT-F4 instead, it should kill TC and bring u back to desktop.

If the steam version is running fine, then it may be that your drive is either having problems reading the disc during install, or while playing, might be worth trying the beta copy protection drivers from TAGES website.
Or are you not bothering with the dvd version now the steam version runs ok?
