I'm not sure if it's still an issue, actually.
Thanks a lot, that's very helpful. Will this work even on the STEAM version - I mean, won't Steam notice the file missing and replace it?

If I run benchmarks, I'll include a plot of the video RAM usage with and without that file.
Steam will only "fix" the missing file if there is an update applied to the game, or you manually tell steam to "verify integrity of game cache" or something like that. I turned off auto-updates as well since I want to stay at 1.3 until the Patrol mission rewards are un-nerfed, or I have 500 billion credits sitting in my stations, whichever comes first. :D

Couldn't run video RAM benchmarks under vista due to new video ram virtualization in Vista. :(

I didn't have any problems with ingame audio quality under WinXP x86/x64 so, there was no need to install ffdshow or any other filter/codec. Things changed when I moved to Vista. Sound was simply horrible. At first I thought some codec was missing but I couldn't find anything related in the forums.

In the end, I took my chances and installed K-Lite Codec Pack Basic which (from what I've understood) basically uses ffdshow to decode various audio/video formats. Ingame audio returned to normal. Also I was able to successfully enable EAX, using Creative Alchemy. I can only speculate that it has something to do with the way sound is handled under Vista.

Fact is, that I haven't seen any problems with the Vista/ffdshow/X3TC combo so far.

Still mono sound for me.

So FRUSTRATING.
I 've reinstalled this game so many times because of the sound issues.

Not a single problem with all my other games.

ONLY THIS ONE.

ONLY THIS ONE!!!!!
