It was the same with the last game, and the same with this one.
The game itself is awsome, and I understand some of this is down to the indie development of this game which I totally respect, but I cannot understand why I cannot get the framerates up.
No my rig is not the fastest supercomputer under the sun but it certainly gets 60FPS+ in most other games.
I have an 8800GTS with 640MB DDR, also an Intel Q6660 Quad core.
I thought mabey I had a memory bottleneck as you reccomended 3GB of RAM, so I dropped in an extra 2GB to bring me up to 4GB, this doesn't seem to have made much difference.
The single most perplexing thing I find is how little tweaking the in game grafics seems to make a difference, I get barely a few FPS difference between Antialiasing on 4x and totally off, which is normally the first setting I drop to get my framerate up.
I've always hated bad framerates and will sacrifice on screen detail if I have to so has anyone got any tips or is it really just impossible to run this game at 60FPS? Or at least better than the 22FPS it seems to settle on with my rig.
Please feel free to link me to another thread I've missed or put my topic in a more appropiate section etc, it's my first post
It's pretty hard to suggest tweaks without a DXDiag report.
Well you could try lowering details to medium/low also try without More dynamic light sources, ship colour variations and glow enabled.
There is also view area setting inside the game but I'm not sure if that affects the performance, I dropped it to minimum when I was towing mines towards a large complex. (though it was more effective to not look towards the complex in the first place )
you could enable that game to use more then 2 gig.
here is what i wrote about it in an other topic.
To let the game use more then 2 gigs of memory you need to edit the .exe of the game.
Use Explorer Suite from http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php
To edit it just right click on the .exe file
open with cff explorer.
File header > characteristics > tick app can use more the 2 gig.
And save.
Remeber to make a backup of the original exe.
This doesn't give a problem with the copy protection on the disk version i don't know about the steam version.
My game currently uses between 1 gig and 2.6gig depending on sector etc.
Also if you are using a 32bit system you need to enable the /3GB switch in the boot.ini.
Before anything can benefit form the added ram.
A single app can only handle 2 gig in a 32bit system unless the switch has been placed in the boot.ini
Also a list of your pc spec's and running apps during gaming can be helpfull.
wow 2 replys in the time it took to reinstall windows after that crappy xfi cards drivers nuked it for the last time (that baby is now in two bits and in my bin)
well i didn't look into supplying a dxdiag as i didn't think this was really a valid tech support request more just asking for a few pointers.
My "tweaking" approach with my 8800 since I brought it is to wack everything up to max detail and then drop the AA settings until it's good.
Works great for most titles
I found with some games though, like stalker clear sky there was just one major offending setting (in that case the light rays, drop them to minimum and my framerate doubled). I was wondering if it was the same here like some people where saying on the forums that certain plasma ball effects caused an issue (I certainly rember getting about 5 FPS at the end of Reunion's storyline).
So I was just curious if after wacking everything to high there's some rougue setting I can drop and get my frames back. Like most people I get a lot lower framerates in the core sectors with all the ships running around, another thing that is weird I get all my framerates back when I dock.
Anyway still I'm loving the game with only this as a small gripe and I didn't think anything would steal me away from Fallout 3
no wonder the extra 2 gig I shoved in didn't make a difference, i'm aware on 3 GB of it should be seen by applications but I though as egosoft reccomended 3 GB this would help
okay, i still get these issues in where the framerate drops and the game jerks about. It really isn't a problem for me until it interferes with the dogfighting. I moaned a bit in some other thread and a moderator said I should supply my DXDIAG, so if anyone can advise me on what to try I'd appreciate it.

To eliminate one possible issue, can you disable the Delta sound hardware, update the drivers for the on-board Realtek sound and use that?
It has to be said, though, that the rest of your hardware configuration is fairly typical of those who are having problems that we've yet to find a reason for.
Fresh XP install yesterday, I do use Symatec Antivirus and Agitum Outpost Security Suite (with malware scanning disabled).
I have tried disconnecting my net connection and then disabling all security software, killing pretty much everything etc. I just added that /3GB switch to my boot.ini
Tried mucking around with Nvidia control panel, forcing vsync, AA, off etc...
Those are not the latest Realtek drivers. Checking the system builder's site for drivers is hopeless; always go to the OEM except for mobile graphics chipsets.
I'm a little edgy about just reinstalling drivers for the sake of it, well at least since the XFI driver I installed yetserday took out my copy of windows.
So instead I just disabled all the audio drivers, Realtek and M-Audio. Same problem.
I just hope there's some sort of pattern being built by all the DXDIAGs being posted so egosoft figures out the problem so it can be patched or somthing.
I've never heard of anyone having problems updating Realtek drivers, so I don't see any reason to be "edgy" about updating them. Disabling the other device was the key step, though, so it's not essential.
Do your slow-downs happen when looking at particular objects or when you're in combat specifically?
well yunno it was easier than faffing around with that
yep for example I will fly away from a spacestation, I'm looking away from it the framerate can be up to 50FPS.
I turn round to look at the space station it will drop to say 20ish, usually jerk a little.
So the problem is always there it's just much worse with more stuff going on. It's at it's most gamebreaking when shooting at littlle fighters as they fly past you and the game jerks (or more accuratly freezes for a second, i think jerking is the mouse movement that has passed in this time) so you miss them.

Unfortunately adding the /3GB switch had a major detremental effect in my machine, framerate lowered down to 1 frame per second even on lowest settings where without the switch the same task would have some skipping but it was still playable at higher settings (high texture, med shadow, 4xAntialias and Anisotropic.) This was just flying through Cardinals Domain, Combat Would be even worse being totally unplayable, even to the point my guns didnt work.
- putting the Windows swapfile in a partition away from the OS might help
- I have mine whacked open to the max on default, and placed on a separate drive..
- the whole universe is running in BETA mode - we're working on it.. beep..!!
