Can't Drive and Watch someone Talk at the Same Time?

Whenever I'm in a com channel with a station, I can't operate my ship, is it normal?
For example, I'm tailing another ship in a fight and I want to tell him to surrender (which I question the usefulnes, but that's beside my point) but when he's telling me to go eat a spacefly or that I betrayed the honor of his stepsister, I can't control my ship, so I end up not following him anymore.

It is a bug or some kind of feature?

As a workaround, I know I can do something like c -> 1 -> Escape in a fast sequence since escape ends the conversation, but it's annoying, takes more time and I'm not sure I'll be able to follow the target around.

(Also happens when I want to dock and the station tells me to wait for the green...)

Edit: I forgot to mention that this only happens when I'm NOT in classic mode, so if I find a way to stay that way, I won't mind!

I can navigate fine during conversations. But I use a joystick to fly with. I presume you're using the keyboard?

What I've done is map some extra turning keys for use in menus.

Go to the controls menu and move to the 'game' tab.
Add the keys: SHIFT+Up / SHIFT+Down / SHIFT+Left / SHIFT+Right - to the different pitch/yaw controls.

Now, when you are in the menus, you can use SHIFT+Direction to turn your ship.

@Xenon_Slayer: Oh, I get the idea! (I had to read 3 times, I'm a bit numb (or dumb...) tonight.) This won't be necessary though. (Read bellow)


(Bellow ) : As suggested on another post, I remaped the "classic control" toggle key to space (and the new one to shift-n) so I can now follow my pray! I still can't shoot, but I'm fine with that : That will teach me to ask them to surrender!
