I just bought a neat new frigate only to have it crash into a factory a minute later. This sort of thing hasnt happened that often, but sometimes ships have gone MIA when I wasnt looking.
So, how do I know the differance between when the game is just being annoying, and when the-worlds-least-brilliant-DRM-scheme has decided my game should be pulverized into a pile of bugged up goo?[/i]
How do I know the differance between rubbish AI and TAGES malfunction?

sounds like Paranoia to me, what makes you think TAGES is out to get you? provided your DVD-Rom Disk is legal you should have no issue's with TAGES if you think you are having a problem it would be wise to contact them as Egosoft does not provide support for TAGES copy protection system.
Answer to your next question is TAGES was chosen by Egosoft's publisher Deepsilver.

TAGES actually advertises such behavior if you check their site. Rather than just say 'you have a pirate copy' and shut down, it can be configured to screw with your game. The video on their site depicts the results of this with a flight simulator. The player with the pirate copy runs out of fuel and crashes.
If EgoSoft set this up for X3, its would be more likely to mess up the business side of the game, taking your credits or something like that. I believe ES did this with X-BtF, back in the day. But I haven't seen anything to indicate that TAGES has been set up this way with X3TC.
