Tupman and the Long Road to Recovery
I decided after reading Squiddy McSquid's Possibly Short Life for a while that I'd like to try something similar with the Poisoned Paranid Start. I will say that I'm a university student, so updates will be dependent on what time I have, saying that though, term is close to ending so my workload is decreasing (Besides revision for my exams in January) so I should be able to update quite regularly. I was aware that this could be a very short story given how the Start drops you off, but as it turns out I survived for long enough to start this...
My Rules:
1. Dead is Dead
2. No Reloads, I lose something, it's lost. Including my life.
I however wish to add that I use a lot of scripts, mostly for my main, and I don't want the pain of having to uninstall them when I play as Tupman/Tuppy, so I will list the "Major" ones here
NPC Bailing Addon 1.6.1 (With big ship bailing set to 10% and Small ship bailing at 30%. Fairly realistic imo)
Salvage Commands and NPCs (If I want to salvage a ship, I have competition)
MARS Fire Control [If I decide to use this on my ships I will enable it for NPCs, fair is fair.]
Lazcorp Claim Derelict (Because Cycrow's SCS didn't work for me)
Medusa Rapid Fire Missile Interface (Moot point, Paranid hate my contagious guts)
Marine Repairs - Allows ships with Marines onboard to repair slowly over time
The Marauder Shipyard - Pirate shipyard
Turbobooster - Cycrow's Split Turbo upgrade
And finally Commodity Logistics Software/Commercial Agent/Economy Supply Trader - Well, let's see if I live long enough to use these
**************************
My name is Tupmanckolanks, I was a Paranid of renown once, until I was poisoned, infected rather, with a contagion deadly to my kind. Now I am hunted, hated by my own people, forsaken by them and the Priest-Duke when I needed them most. Fleeing my small trade empire, and my luxurious Hyperion Yacht, I book passage aboard a Demeter Hauler headed for Boron space, when suddenly, in the middle of Preacher's Refuge, the pilot bails....
I slip into the recently vacated cockpit and take a look, then curse softly, the fear of death stabbing me with an icy claw, every military ship in the system is bearing down on me. If I ever reconcile with my people, I am done with our faith, it has done nothing for me....
This is my story.
[A Little In Character Intro]
*************************
As if being ill wasn't enough....
Immediately, I gun for the East gate into Shore's of Infnity, it's my only hope of getting out of this alive, especially since nearly every Paranid Military ship in the sector is bearing down on me, and there is an M2/M7M carrier group about 20km away, which is never good.
I set my turret to attack all enemies, screw my rep with the Paranid, I've got bigger fish to fry, like getting out of this system alive when nearly every fighter flies faster than my puny 75 m/s. I have around 40km to the gate, none of this looks promising for me, especially as the aforemented carrier group is off to the "South-East" of me and moving towards my intended flight path.
Suddenly my Hauler (Which I have already affectionately named the Barn Door, as in... easy to hit) lurches and the shields drop a little as IRE blasts impact along the side, followed by the sound of my turret opening fire. Two Pegasuses (Pegasi?) have reached me, the forerunners of a small patrol wing involving another Pegasus and two Pericles, by the looks of it. Not good news, my lone IRE in my rear turret can just about fend off the Pegasi, maybe even destroy one or two, but those Pericles are going to be a whole different circle of heck unless I reach the gate before they reach me. It's going to be tense, and I feel like praying as the distance between me, the gate and the enemy ships grows shorter with every seconds.
At 30km I'm rewarded with a drop in Paranid reputation and the satisfying scream of a Pegasus pilot who's ship just blew up around him, and at 27km the other Pegasus pilot bails. I don't have time to collect it though, as after a brief lull in which my shields climb back up to 75%, the Pericles arrive.
15km to go to the gate, and my shields are at 40%, the Pericles keep overshooting me in their attack runs, rather than just staying on my butt and blasting me to spacedust, which gives some time to recharge my shields, it's looking like I might just make it, and then.... things get worse. A lot worse.
Remember I mentioned that M7M? Something motivated it to launch some Flail Barrages at me, three or so, I believe, from around 20km away. 10km to the gate, and a barrage of missiles that will tear me out of the sky coming after me from 20km away. Some might say that isn't a problem, I only have to cover 10km, they have 20km to reach me, but these things move faster than me, a lot faster, if I remember from my Kraken in another game. However, I make it, just. I have 20% of my shield when I reach the gate, and I can see every individual missile in the flail barrage when I am rewarded by the sudden lurch of my ship entering the jumpgate.
Shore of Infinity, here I come!
*********************
Now Entering: Shore of Infinity.
As soon as I enter the sector I am greeted by two things, a Paranid Demeter and it's Pegasus escort which seems really keen to finish the job started in Preacher's Refuge, and a message from some Paranid, obviously a former associate of mine, and a nice one at that, as he's just said that he's holding onto my former assets for me, including my Hyperion, but reckons he can only hide them from the Priest Duke's forces for 75 hours. Thanks mate, but I'm infected and I don't know of a cure for this disease.
My turret begins whittling away at the Paranid Demeter (The joys of attack all enemies) as I punch the engines to full and begin desperately legging it for the Boron Trading station. This nets me more trouble than I needed, as a Boron Border Patrol Barracuda decides that it's time to show me a lesson. Ulp... I don't think I'm going to make it. I take the time to survey the Barn Door's freight bay and find that I have four fighter drones onboard.... Maybe this can work to my advantage.....
(At this point I recieve a message from a Boron doctor saying he can cure me, but it costs 25,000,000 cr. Yikes, and I need that cure within 75 game hours.)
The Barracuda finally catches up with me when I'm 15km from the trading station, and my back turret immediately begins to fire at it. I release my fighter drones and start praying again as my shields begin to fall once more, having climbed to 45%.
Lady Luck decides that she's been mean enough to me so far to give me a little luck, and the Boron pilot bails with 90% of his hull intact, most of his upgrades and his shields and.... a single IRE. He's about 200 metres from my ship which is on auto-pilot. I decide to eject my rear turret's IRE, bail from the Barn door and claim the Barracuda, I collect my IRE, bringing my Barracuda up to two IREs, and apologise to the Barracuda Pilots incoming buddy. I take a small rep hit with the boron, but I just doubled my assets. For the first time since infection, life is looking up.

Alright, here we go guys, the culmination of my second play session on Sunday evening, and of my game today.
****************
I for one hail our new fishy overlords
Since Boron are the nearest race that don't hate my guts, I've decided that I shall, for the moment, "sail" under their flag as a Privateer. This makes sense on two levels, the immediate, and the future. The immediate being that I've noticed a lot of Split traffic in these sectors, and it's an invitation to state sanctioned piracy. The future being that it's a boron who has the cure for me.
I spend a few minutes repairing the Barracuda, now named "Lady Luck", and then a few more fixing up the "Barn Door". Once I've got this all done, I'm eager to try out my awesome array of.... 2 IREs. Well, this could be... interesting.
I need weapons, and I'm too poor and too much of a cheapskate to buy my own any way. I need all the credits I can get simply to pay for this medecine. I bring up the sector map and begin looking at the few pieces of Split traffic moving through the system. Jackpot. I see a Split Weapons Dealer in a Demeter coming from the East Gate to Lucky Planets. I begin homing in and start hoping that this is not the end for Tupman, because, as much as I need her valuable cargo of weapons (Or what I can only hope is a cargo of weapons, and that she's not sold them), I fear that it's packed with fighter drones.
As I begin to engage, my fears are answered and I spend the next five minutes playing Cat-and-RSLG tactics with four fighter drones, but I manage to get the pilot to drop 2 PACs (YES!) and even better, to hand over his ship. I should take up a job as a diplomat, I appear to be very good at negotiation. I spend the next twenty minutes repairing this Demeter, which has absolutely no equipment left, before heading into Lucky Planets.
I cruise through Lucky Planets, picking on split shipping as I go, with the Demeter following me, and Barn Door safely tucked away at a BoFu Lab in Shore of Infinity. I cap a Mamba, and after repairing it, I sell it at the Boron Shipyard in the sector. I loot a few missiles from my kills and sell them, and if there is something I can sell in my immediate vicinity that requires something larger, I use the Demeter. I earn myself some needed Boron Rep through this, and some even more needed credits. I continue in this fashion into Rolk's Legacy and onto Great Trench, where my luck turns a little sour. I cause a Split Caiman to bail, but a passing Argon Salvager beats me to the punch and claims it before I can. Cheeky little sod, I was tempted to blow him to Kingdom Come (Or should that be Kingdom's End).
I do a couple of Easy Station Defence missions in Great Trench, capping a Pirate Harrier Raider, and discovering that Gladiator rear turrets HURT. I then use my credits (at this point, around 220 000) to upgrade my ship with a Triplex Scanner, Fight Command Software MKII, and my Cargo bay extensions, plus Engine/Rudder Tunings, before heading back to Rolk's Legacy. Here I pick up another two missions, one of which involves shipping some BoFu to a High Tech Weapons Complex, and another which involves bringing a Paranid pilot a Demeter. All this looks good to me, and I order Barn Door to buy some BoFu (20 units, the mission only asked for 8 though) and fly to the station. I then order the Demeter that's following me to dock at the station and give it to the Paranid pilot, netting myself some more cash. I then take on a mission transporting some small goods to Lucky Planets to kill some time. The Cargo is small, so I take it in the Lady Luck. The mission is considered hard, but luck is on my side and I complete with around half a minute to spare.
Lady Luck in Rolk's Legacy
I then wait for the Barn Door to enter the sector and take another, harder Station Defence mission. It involves offing two M5s, an M4 and an M8. Not that hard at all, but it pays well. Eventually, the Barn Door joins me and I begin to escort it towards Rolk's Legacy. Three-Quarters of the way there, a Paranid Military Taskforce which has a Carrier and an M2 in it, enters the sector. Looks like the Barn Door was lucky not to get caught by that back in Shore of Infinity. I complete the delivery on time and then get another from the same station for another ten units of BoFu. I happen to have that in the Cargo hold, and so complete it right away. I'm coming up on my first million credits and it's not even been two hours yet. To break the threshold, I take another station defence mission and am pitted against 3 M5s, 2 M3s and an M8. Easy even with my lack of weapons, but I still haven't got one of the fabled M8 bails, sadly. I have however, got my first one million, so it's not all bad. I was a little unsure at first, but it seems I have a real shot at getting that 25 million before my time limit expires. Even if I get 1 million every 2 hours, that's only fifty hours to reach my threshold, which leaves me with plenty of slack.
I decide to hop north into Montalaar to check things out up there, but Argon Security forces do a fair impression of Gandalf ("You shall not pass!"), and like a good little Balrog, I leave when asked so politely.
As I enter Rolk's Legacy once more, I notice that the Paranid Task force has shown up, an decide that I'll tail them with Lady Luck and the Barn Door, once they're inevitably destroyed, or come across some Boron Security forces, their is likely going to be some nice loot. If I could grab some capship weapons for resale, I could get a few more million credits with minimum effort.
All the missions have got me some decent rep with the Boron. I guess the Boron and the Teladi are my current "most likely" friends4lyfe at the moment.
Assets:

2x IRE
2x PAC
Full Shielding
1x Demeter Hauler 'Barn Door'
1x Harrier Raider 'New Horizons'

(Edit: Forgot my Harrier Raider in my assets list, that's because it's happily exploring away)

real enjoyable read ravenholme
very informative between you and slug i have decided to take up the life of a privateer
well on my third life so far but learning from my mistakes
1 : killed myself on a return ship mission after claiming the ship i gave it instructions to dock at x station and kaboom the autopilot ran me over as i was parked 300 m away
2 : picked up a defend station mission from terracorp hq and well i hit the station once too many times and kaboom i was toasted
3 : doing well so far luck seems to be with me as there was a pirate convoy going through argon prime that got toasted so i did a bit of salvege and netted a fair bit of cash that got ploughed back into my ship ( discoverer )
so far i have
4 ire
10 mosquito missiles
and 38 k in creds
4 hours of gameplay and hopefully many more
ps is there a thread about missile types and usages ( apart from blowing stuff up
)
well peace out

Alright, here we go.
****************
It never rains but it pours.... creditsssss
I mentioned that Paranid Taskforce, and recently said I thought it'd be a waste following them. It would have been, but as they reached the south gate, a Pirate Carrack and escorts popped through the south gate from Gunne's Crusade. Watching the resulting skirmish was entertaining, and left enough loot for the Barn Door to pick up, along with having two Boron Border Patrol Octopus pilots bail after taking a beating from a Pirate Nova, which I promptly vapourised. Once it's all clear, I swoop in and claim the Octopi, repairing them and sending them West to Lucky Planets to be sold.
I then remember that I haven't yet sold a Demeter SF and Mamba I captured a while back, and sell them, bringing my credits up into the 5mil region. A fifth of the way to my target. My scout ship has been exploring east of Great trench into the Teladi sectors that way and I decide it's time to follow it, and after the Barn Door has picked up the missiles left over from the skirmish, we set off.
In Great Trench, I find a Discoverer and Octopus Sentinel that have bailed in some form of skirmish, and capture them too, repairing them and sending them west again, before accepting a Station defence mission with a decent payout (Around 178 000 cr). I learn that this is because it's got quite a large number of enemies, and after a bad experience with a Buzzard mounted with Fragmentation Bomb Launchers, have to perform an RSLG to behind a trading station before going after the Pirate Hades, who, to my great surprise bails at around 90% hull damage. After around 8 station defence missions with no bails, this is amazing, so I finish off the remaining pirates, claim it, and send it west to be sold with the M5s. I then dock at the EQ dock in Great Trench and upgrade my armaments to 4 PACs and 2 HEPTs, to finally give Lady Luck a proper bite, before purchasing a freight scanner and a Boron Police License.
I head East into the next sector and pick up another station defence mission to earn some more rep, and in this easy mission I cap a second M8, a Gladiator. I repair her and send her North to Ianumus to be sold, along with a Pirate Falcon that I retrieved after picking on a Pirate convoy moving north.
With these ships sold, I have over 14mil credits. Almost 3/5ths of the way to my target, in around five hours of play.
I spend a little while raising my rep with the Teladi through some boring trade missions, and invest in trade command software MKIII and turn the Barn Door into a sector trader in Lucky Planets, to let her autonomously trade and raise my trade rank, which isn't all that great.
Not bad for a Paranid with a cough, huh?

Here we go, and I just want to say that I got up to 21 mil credits.
The end of "The Cure" mission is in sight, and I will be soon coming into posession of a Hyperion Vanguard. I'd like advice from people who are in the know - How best to outfit it, a decent, general loadout?
I also need tips, I really (Desperately) want an Otas Venti as a personal fighter to dock at the Hyperion Vanguard, would anyone know of any way to acquire one? If I *Have* to pirate it, where would be the best place to jump an Otas convoy to get one?

Well, the day started with me accepting an assassination mission from an Argon pilot in Lucky Planets, for Rolk's Legacy. A quick nip through the jumpgate and I spy with my little eye, something beginning with T. The Target. I lock up the target, flying a Pirate Nova Raider and close to engagement range, before opening fire in a devestating first barrage that uses up all my weapon's energy (overkill, I know), but incinerates the target. I earn a small set of credits and, finally, the Argon rep of Citizen! Yipee! Time to head north into Montalaar and take advantage of all these juicy hostile Paranid Freighters.
I ended up taking a Defend Station mission in Montalaar, to buff my rep, and ended up capping a Buster Hauler and a Falcon out of it, after the mission was done, I repaired them and sent them north into Light of Heart for Sale. Earned me a cool 1.2 mil. I then took on a single sector patrol against Xenon in Montalaar, to try out the reduction of enemies in 1.3 . The reduction is massive people, it spawned around 4 Ls, 3 Ms and a couple of Ns. It was an easy enough mission, though I had to RSLG to the south gate with an L on my tail for emergency repairs, but earned me a half decent amount, especially when I gathered up what the barracuda could hold to sell in the way of missiles.
I then saw an Otas Venti go by in an Otas convoy, and fell in love. I think it's a lovely looking fighter, and it's stats are not to be sniffed at, so I began to edge my way north to Legend's Home, taking missions as I go and shooting up Paranid freighters, eventually getting my rep up to Trusted Ally, and breaking 20 mil credits, only to find to my disappointment that they do not sell the Venti, only the Solano (Which I'm not so fond of). They do however sell JDs, and I purchase one, before jumping back to Montalaar. (After going the long way round for the past six hours, the ability to say that I JUMPED somewhere is nothing short of a huge relief)
I narrowly avoid becoming a splat on the windshield of a Mercury SF, and take another Xenon Patrol mission. This one is even tamer than the last, but I grab a few bailed Argon Military Discoverers out of it, and with the mission reward and the sale of those Discos once they are repaired, I break 21 mil credits.
The end is very much in sight, Tupman is soon to become a force to be reckoned with.

And a final question: What sort of equipment does the Hyperion come with as a standard?
