I have spent some time browsing the forums and following some of the good advice which has already been given. X3TC plays nowhere near as well as X3R which ran happily on max settings with 611 ships, 264 stations, etc. I am a fan of the new interface and see far more potential in this game, but presently for me it isn't producing the goods.
I have cleaned up the registry, removed unnecessary services, defrag'd the hard drive, updated the graphics drivers. Set the 3gb switch, dedicated a core to the game and suspended AV services. Run the game with the on board HD sound card disabled for comparative purposes (no change). ffdshow audio and video configured to exclude X3TC.exe
Performance didn't start off this badly but has got progressively worse. I also seem to have stumbled into 3 plot threads at the same time Terran, Goner, (and something to do with the Kha'ak) ah well!
Any advice please on how I could improve the SETA performance?
Changing graphics settings does not improve SETA behaviour.
X3TC v1.2.1 English, no mods.

i also have noticed seta problems. i have seen it a lot worse in some sector compared to others. i have already turned down the settings, reduced screen resolution, and made sure no other programs are running.
i reformatted my pc the day i got this game, and the only thing i installed other than the game was zone alarm, paint shop pro and printer drivers.
i installed all the latest video and sound card drivers, and still have the same problem.
hopefully it will be fixed with the next patch.

What you must remember with SETA is that you are asking your computer to do more work at any given time. For example, making some basic assumptions and taking a number for the hell of it.
Universe with 1000 objects:
Normal speed: 1000 objects tracked each second.
2x SETA: 2000 objects tracked each second.
4x SETA: 4000 objects tracked each second.
And so on and so on. Now, there are a lot more than 1000 objects in the X universe but that should give you an idea as to what is going on. Also, the sector you are in has collision detection - depending on the number of objects in sector that can be next to no work or too much work. Trying to get a 10x SETA in a busy sector is almost (but not quite) impossible. That said there are a few things that can help:
Have a really fast CPU - Dual/Tri/Quad cores are of no real assistance, but they can offer a small performance boost as other tasks (n on X3:TC) can be done on those cores.
Fly quite slow and away from heavy traffic - Basically remove yourself from the collision detection, I have found that this can help. However, it does not always do anything other than negate the use of SETA.
Make sure there are no battles going on - All those lasers etc take a fair amount of processing. SETA while an M2 spreads PPC's all over (and missing that single M5 all the time) can really kill performance.
Disable Catalyst AI - Catalyst AI tries to optimise certain parts of the driver at run time, I'll be honest I am not really sure exactly what it does but it does take extra CPU power. Unless you have a Dual/Tri/Quad core CPU this should be turned off.
Search Google for Windows tweaking guides - Find the Black Viper services list and follow it (If you feel confident enough). You might be shocked at how much more you can get out of your computer. Do you really need that smart card service running? No? Thought not
Sit back and accept it - Ok, that might not seem helpful. I don't think a patch is going to be able to work wonders with SETA. No matter how fast your system a CPU still only has a finite number of slices to let an application do it's work.

At least a dual core is a good idea. Yes, the x3tc.exe process only has one thread itself, but if you look at it while it's running, there's quite a few threads - some to do with directSound, some to do with the graphics drivers, and at least one to do with direct3d. In my experience, all the other threads put together probably do a third of the work of the main thread. Add system processes on top of that and 2 cores are worth it imoEventHorizon wrote:Have a really fast CPU - Dual/Tri/Quad cores are of no real assistance, but they can offer a small performance boost as other tasks (n on X3:TC) can be done on those cores.

I agree about a Quad core processor being of no real benefit playing X3:TC over a Dual core system. I also agree that using SETA places a far heavier burden on CPU resources than playing in standard time. However it doesn't explain the enormous margin of game play experience using SETA in X3:R against X3:TC where I was vastly further on in the game and owned 100's of stations and ships and had explored the entire universe. I am not convinced this isn't a performance issue with the new software and note that my situation isn't unique judging by many threads in the Forum. As a test I have experimented by reducing SETA to x3 in a sparely populated sector away from other ships and stations but it gives no real improvement. Perhaps it could be my system or the way it is set-up but it handles X3:R without issue or incident and is well within recommended specification.

I have the same problem appeared just out of the blue !!!
Ive been seating on SETA for 4 hrs training my marines yesterday and I have noticed that my perfomance on SETA went badly slow. Now my ship is moving faster without it
I really dont understand how does a training of 20 marines simultaneously affect the perfomance, but I do think its quite logical that if you have huge complexes making goods for THE HUB for example, then your computer should just stop
It has nothing to do with computer itself I believe. Maybe there are some tweaks that can be made for better but I think its the game problem alone. And we should learn what to do to avoid it.
By the way, early marine training did not affect SETA. Whats the difference really ? I mean the game just make them train slower on higher levels - there are no additional calculations to be made in this process. I guess I can be wrong in that (and I hope I am and when marines are done - game will be back to normal) but it seems so logical.

by the way - I tried rebooting comp, reloading the game, nothing helps. In the past it was a solution when playing for a long time, but now it doesnt help

We talked about something along these lines in another threat too. Until they come up with some fixes and patches what we do is pretty much disable all fancy stuff and no AA/AF. And there is a script that removes all rocks from the universe and only lets minable asteroids stay behind. Needless to say this script alone doubled and more fps in some regions.
EDIT: I almost forgot, there's an excellent script that removes the civilian ships from the game too and only lets the essential ones behind. That one helped a lot too. It is not up to X3:R speeds yet, but it is pretty ok now.
