Disc not recognised - X3 or Tages problem?

My Pioneer drive doesn't see the disc a lot of the time. I have to eject the disc and put it back in a few times to get the game to run sometimes. Very annoying.

So, have any of you had any reply from Tages? I've got Toshiba TS-L802A, and after first reply they are ignoring me compleatly. Now I have a borrowed external DVD player but eventually I have to give it back.

OK, we have a workaround for people with this problem. It involves switching your TAGES copy protection to the version with online activation, and it means that I will need to issue activation keys individually to those who need them. Please contact me by PM if you are having this problem.

For obvious reasons I will only issue activation keys and instructions to people who have registered their copy of X3TC. I also don't have time, or available activation keys, to deal with more cases than absolutely necessary, so please don't bother to contact me by PM unless you are having genuine problems with the disk not being recognised by your DVD drive.

I´ have been researching DRM´s for quite a long time. I specialize in Securom, but I know something or 2 on the other DRM´s

Now.. How many of the users who have posted on this thread have tried to disable autorun feature on their optical drive?

The fact that no one answered me and said "I´ve tried but didn´t work" makes me think that.

Now please try, you´ll avoid yourselves and CBJ some trouble.

Disable the autorun feature and reboot...

Was always trying to run from a link on my desktop though unsucessfully, which I assumed bypassed any auto run feature on the DVD - if I'm wrong about that though please correct me, I'm sure there are others who may have as limited a knowledge of the workings of a PC and Windows as myself.... well maybe not quite so limited....

Hi all, I was just about to install the game (retail boxed) and came here for a final check on the probs posted.

Before I do though:


Will installing this game scrap my optical drives????


I have read that this can happen on several different forums. To be honest my rig is only 2 months old and I don't fancy screwing it for the sake of a game. Perhaps someone from egosoft could answer.

I posted the followig last night, it may help some less pc savvy gamers get over some problems. Its still the way I shall install if I can be assured it will not blow any of my hardware, otherwise I'm off for a drive to refund city.

Just received the game and came looking for patches, I must say I'm not too pleased so far as there seems to be rather a lot of problems posted here.

I have not installed yet, tomorrow hopefully, but just a thought for those suffering slow downs, poor fps etc. Well it works for me, although in this high spec, multi app OS time it seems a throw back to the good old days.

Its late, so quick summary.

1. Hard Drive: 2 partitions (or 2 drives)

2. Install windows (XP SP3 for me), latest chipset drivers (inc sound), latest direct X, latest graphics driver

3. Install disk image software, create image to second partition.

4. Install game including patches so as ready to run.

5. Create another image to second partition, (ie named X3?)

6. Load first image (ie clean windows) and load all your fav progs, printer etc, not forgetting firewall & anti virus.

7. Create another image of your upto date everyday windows.

8. Rember to store all data/work on 2nd partition/drive.

9. Restore image for given use, ie game or windows.

DONT FORGET TO BACK UP SAVEGAMES AND DATA/WORK BEFORE RESTORING!!!!!!!

Hope this might help some people, even if it is hastily written, you should get the idea.

I do this all the time, currently five game images, it only takes me approx 5 mins to restore my largest image, make a coffee?

It takes a bit of discipline to remember to back up but its not too hard to remember is it? Use a post it!

I have found that I am quite happily playing when others have been suffering possibly due to god knows how many resources been zapped and conflicts popping up from numerous multi prog installations. It doesn't always work, sometimes we just get a crap game.

So will this help X3? don't know, works for me on other games so hope it helps you. But its now 3AM and so i'm off to crash!

There hasn't been a single report in this thread (or the entire Tech Support forum, as far as I know) about somebody's drive getting physically damaged by TAGES. Where have you read that it can happen?

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

I was not specifically talking of X3 or this forum, although some postings have hinted it might be a problem. I can not give you specific forum postings (ie not necessarily Egosoft) but after years of playing and visiting different forums it has been stated that some forms of DRM can play havoc and/or damage your rig.

I don't know if its true, to be honest I know very little about DRM, I just want to play games.

I did not intend to imply X3 is a rig killer but was after some assurance. I like many others would just like to install and play without major problems.

Sorry for any confusion, perhaps you could answer me two questions though.

1. Does the bxed retail X3 TC install some form of DRM to my hard drive?

2. Does my way of installing/playing with images (as detailed before) promote stability and minimize glitches?

2. Creating a working image of the disk would require/constitute circumvention of the copy protection, which is illegal under EU law and may not be discussed here.

yes, there has been mention about DRM breaking people's computers. Unfortunetely it's all mince I did some deep digging about this a few years ago and was never able to get back to a primary source - it was always "everyone says it can break your computer" and never "this broke my computer". Anyway, that rumour started over a completely different make of copy protection, so that's not a problem anyway

Hmmm. Ok, the sticky says it uses TAGES, fine if you know what TAGES is, but I spent some time here last night and couldn't find a definitive answer to its exact function and how it works (or rather too many different answers) Normally I just stick the disk in and play.

On my second question, please do not boot me off I hope to be here for quite a while if i can get on with the game, could you answer this last point and then I will respectfully "shut up" about the subject if it is deemed illegal.

I run windows XP, properly purchased.

All my software, games and apps, are properly purchased, including disk imaging software.

My prefered games are sim-like, ie X3, SH4 etc and as such can be played continuously for months, or well over a year.

Any image produced is computer specific, ie mine, only used by me to ensure the most stable platform for playing multiple games and general computer work is available, ie ever had children on your computer, or conflicts from several game installations?

As it stands the game is not copied, it is installed ONCE, patched and played. The image of the game is only active while the game is being played, ie 1 image for X3, 1 image for SH4, 1 image for Crysis. When not playing games i just use my Windows image with no games installed.

I have never been told this is a problem before but if so i shall desist and not mention the subject again.

Not quite true. Backing up your hard drive does not involve circumventing copy protection - backing up games and/or imaging CDs often does.

Under EU law (which is what covers this forum) it is perfectly legal to make one backup copy of your software unless it means circumventing copy protection. In the case of Terran Conflict, it means circumventing TAGES - which makes it illegal under EU law.

Disk imaging software itself isn't illegal - just the same as a BitTorrent client isn't illegal in itself. It's the use it's put to that can break the law.

Note: Using the installer to install the game to your hard-drive isn't copying it, it's using it for it's intended function. Using disk-emulation software to simulate the disk being in a drive, however, counts as copy protection circumvention.

Just to clarify I don't use any emulation software to mount images or try workarounds.

The computer is disconnected from the internet, so no firewall/anti virus. The game image is restored, replacing my C:\ root drive, ie it is the working computer with the game disk in the drive. Nice clean virgin OS and game.

From previous experiece the game would not run without the disk in the drive.

So thanks again for the clarifying, I was fairly sure i was safe in what i was doing.

To be fair it has only been in recent times the average computer has been fast enough to make all this worthwhile.

I do like gaming this way, how many times to people have problems and get told to start from scratch with a new build after suffering for weeks with bloated apps/conflicts etc?

Good for the devs et all as well, present a problem with a short concise system report... hopefully get a quick answer!

Anyway a few things to finish up and i can finally install the bloody game and give it a go!

This post is the important one:

OK, we have a workaround for people with this problem. It involves switching your TAGES copy protection to the version with online activation, and it means that I will need to issue activation keys individually to those who need them. Please contact me by PM if you are having this problem.

For obvious reasons I will only issue activation keys and instructions to people who have registered their copy of X3TC. I also don't have time, or available activation keys, to deal with more cases than absolutely necessary, so please don't bother to contact me by PM unless you are having genuine problems with the disk not being recognised by your DVD drive.
