Post by ChairborneRanger »

After the last patch to 1.21 I've been having CTDs. The windows error I receive is as follows:

It seems however I've only gotten this CTD when piloting:

My springblossum with Aldrin starbursts in the left and right turrets. It almost is like it's happening when they go off.
Please keep in mind I have two 9800GTX cards in SLI, however I have not been running them in SLI mode because I like having my map up on my other screen. Here is my DXDiag:

Ok, small update to my problem..

It seems to only happen when I'm fighting in Xenon patrol missions. Being assassin rank things tend to get pretty hairy, and that's where my last save was when I started getting the CTD. So I decided to go and do something else for a while. This allowed me to play the game for quite a few hours with no problems whatsoever. Then I took a Xenon patrol in upper right boron space. Very hard mission, so it was a total P swarm within minutes. Sadly It looks like I got Vindicator while on this mission halfway through and it started dropping Ks :o

During a rousing fight around the gate with about 6 P, 10 L, 5-6 Ms, and an undisclosed number of N (starbursters obliterate the poor little bastards so it's hard to get a count) I was just about to have that K get in range and ..... CTD

I'm going to go and try to pick up a mem stick to see if readyboost, or whatever it's called, will help because about 2 to 3 minutes before I crash, I start getting the HDD shudders.

BTW I'm on Vista Ultimate 64-bit and I am now running in SLI mode with my vid cards.

UPDATE:

This is no longer attributed to flying the ship mentioned above. I've seen some other threads that hint at problem with the storyline enabled scripting and how it seems to effect the game. Particularly when it comes to the stuttering problem during combat. I believe this is linked to the scripting or programming that determines the difficulty of any mission.

I was flying the above mentioned ship, had no changes to my system setup, and I was doing operation Final Fury...
Spoiler
Show
The part where they ask you to scan 3 asteroids for high yield in the adjacent unknown sector. Being Vindicator I was pestered by moderate amounts of fighters, interceptors, and scouts. After almost every enemy Kha'ak killed I had a .5 to 1 second stutter. Upon finishing my scans and the mission moving to the next stage to protect the TLs I had a nice 2 second pause before I noticed a destroyer had jumped in. Since I was in my springblossom and had probably no chance against it, I called in my Thresher. Not 5 seconds after transporting to my thresher and ordering my springblossom to defend the TL so I could engage the destroyer, the game crashed to desktop.
There seems to be no correlation to any graphic settings I make seeing as I never max out my CPU, and I have a pair of SLI set 9800 GTX GPUs. I know my CPU never maxxes because I have a G15 keyboard that lets me monitor CPU and RAM usage on the fly and I've never seen a core max out even during a P swarm.

It'd be nice if someone would respond. I feel like I'm talking to myself here...

I must have completely missed this thread. Sorry about that.

Your DXDiag report looks OK, though I think there are newer drivers for your X-Fi. Your Logitech sound drivers are the exact same ones I'm running, though for slightly different headphones, so I'm pretty sure they are OK. I'd also like to congratulate you for having the shortest, cleanest codec list I think I've see in here! ;)

All that leaves me scratching my head a bit for possible causes. I'm pretty sure it's not related to any specific game feature as CTDs are one thing that very few people are reporting with X3TC, and those that do have all been fairly easy to track down to a system configuration issue.

Only two things spring to mind I'm afraid.

The first is that with dual 9800GTXs, even in non-SLI mode, your system is going to be drawing a good bit of power. If your PSU is even slightly underpowered or suffering from any kind of minor fault, that could easily show up in the form of crashes. The additional disk activity could a contributing factor as that would draw still more power, especially if the disk is a SATA one, or it could just be a symptom rather than a cause of the crash.

The second possibility is that it is indeed related to the disk activity and is caused by something interfering with disk access. The most common culprit in these cases are viruses and, ironically, anti-virus software. Run a thorough scan, then switch off your anti-virus and try running the game without it on. And of course don't forget to switch it back on again when you've finished!

Thanks for the response CBJ. I will have to admit something I really don't want to, because you got me thinking when you talked about power and hardware. It's not that I don't have enough power for the cards. I run a 900W PSU and none of the rails are under volt. I do, however, run my RAM over volt because it will not run stable at the standard 1.5 it's designed for if it is set at the board max of 1333Mz. It's actually somewhat aggravating because the board will easily run at that speed and the RAM is rated to run 1333Mz, but the RAM is unwilling to automatically do so unless it is set manually and with the voltage increased to the 1.65-1.675 range.

At this point I went ahead and set it back to 1066 on the board and RAM in linked mode and set my timing back to defaults. From my last testing it seems to be working ok, because I was able to finish the previously mentioned mission without a CTD. Also I was able to get mostly through the next mission, however...

7 Kha'ak clusters is too much even for my poor springblossom!! I got toasted by about 50 scouts despite the fact that I had about 150 poltergeist missiles in the air and my starbursters sucking on my generator to the last electron. Also, you need to tell the guys in scripting that spawning Kha'ak M5/4/3s all over the zone for me to intercept, and then popping a corvette 2 clicks from the convoy is not nice. The clusters I can figure out, but that is just plain evil.
Anyway, I was still having the stuttering throughout both missions and I don't really think it has to do with my hard drive. I run a hardware SATA RAID 0 with 2 7200 RPM drives, and I have a 4GB flash stick set for ready boost. It could have been the fact that I set it to idle in SETA X 10 and left for work. I'm still working on the hub, and I didn't reload the game from desktop when I got home. Anyway, more info as I get it I suppose.

Ok, I still have problems with CTD during combat. It seems to happen no matter what settings I have, and if I have EAX/Alchemy turned on or off. I think it may happen more often when there are missiles in the air, but that is something I haven't tried to really test yet. I'm arming an Aquilo M7M now in an effort to have a decent stab at it.

On a similar note, I am now unable to build stations. Period. Upon issuing the command to any one of my TLs, I will get confirmation from Betty, then the nice camera rotation around my TL, and then..... CTD. I've tried every kind of station I can think of, and it doesn't seem to discriminate.

None of my information has changed. The drivers I have are up to date, despite what it might seem in my DXDiag. I install the latest packages from all component manufacturers, and the dates you see up there are what I've got. Is there a station limit? I have at least 50-60 stations in 3 different zones.

That's a known issue. The workround is to hit F2 for external view, then tap 0 on the numeric keypad to cycle through all the available external view types. Apparently this crash is purely related to how long you've been playing and has nothing to do with the number of stations you have.

Am I going to have to do that for every station I drop now? I will admit that I've used SETA to pass about a few hundred hours, if not more.

Only until it has been fixed in a patch.
