Your sound drivers and DirectX could probably use an update as well (in fact it's not impossible the latter is why updating your video drivers had adverse effects before). Create a System Restore point first if you're feeling cautious.
Fine! Finally did that chore I was putting off... updated Dx with the latest redist (web update was playing me about), updated graphics drivers to the 178.24 WHQL (latest) version. Couldn't find any newer audio drivers.
System still works (so far - *taps desk*), old other-program-issue-with-other-drivers isn't there with these new ones (phew). X³:TC still runs. Will have to wait until I get a decent play-session to see if the issue reoccurs.

industry friend says to take a close look at the texturing and meshes of the models.
dont know myself what all the tech jargon he spouted at me was,but he used the word "slapshod" a lot.
the way he said to see what he means was to get close to a ship and shoot it at different spots with the repair laser to see what he means.
i did,and still dont see what he means
when he started talking about the way scripts are also affecting FPS i zoned out.
maybe thats what the next patch will have,a lot of "nip and tucks" as he said.

Ok, got a chance to play last night, and the issue happened twice. First time was moments after a Khaak cluster seperated and started heading towards me. It went after a few seconds.
Second time (had closed the game and reloaded since the last time) was a station defense mission. As the pirates were coming through the gate, the computer simply choked up and stalled with the HDD grinding away.
This time, however, the grinding did not stop. It was there right the way through the fight, accompanied by a large drop in FPS. The pirates were killed, and the grinding still didn't stop. I docked at a station and happened to look at their wares when I spotted that as the HDD was grinding, the little video window was showing random frames of different videos. Each one was there for a split second before it switched to the next (Teladi - Goner - ware - question mark - Argon).
I took some quick-succession screenshots of this.
I then jumped to the next sector. Once the previous sector had been unloaded, the HDD's grinding stopped. I commed the nearest ship to have a look at the vid-window, and it was back to normal. (Took a screenshot of that too).
Stuck the screenies together so you can have a look: 1.18mb gif.
I'm hoping to dig out a copy of FileMon so I can try to work out what file it's grinding on soon.
