X3TC not utilizing my graphics card?

Post by FortLong »

Hello,
Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I have been experiencing the same stuttering issue most people seem to be having, so I decided to check what my graphics card was doing during gameplay.
To my surprise, it's not doing a lot actually. :o
Here's what GPU-Z showed me. The shot was taken right after I alt-tabbed out of the game.
[ external image ]

Look at the GPU load, its mostly at 0% with only a few peaks at around 25%. This is measured at Brennan's Triumph, where there was a small skirmish going on with some pirates against an escort of ships. The last peak was when I quitted the game.
Also, the temperature of the GPU doesn't rise at all, confirming it is indeed idle.
Finally, the clock speed seems to randomly switch between desktop mode (500MHz) and 3d mode (750MHz).

For comparison, I tested X3:Reunion, where the GPU load easily into 40%, even when I was just flying around with no battles going on. Here's the screenshot.

Can anyone confirm this? :?

This is not surprising. Terran Conflict is completely CPU limited if you have a decent GPU. And in the game's current state the CPU is getting bogged down with errant scripts or something which doesn't leave it much time to keep your GPU fed.

I can run TC at 1440x900 with 2x2 supersampling AA + 4xMSAA + 16xAF and get the exact same (low) FPS as I do without any AA or AF at all. I have a GTX260 and an overclocked (3.2GHz) E6750 :)

Thanks for replying.

A bogged down CPU might explain it. On the other hand, I'm running a new game; no UT's, no factories, no fancy new wings, just me cruising around in my sabre. :)
I've checked my CPU load, and one core peaks around 85%, the other around 60% (I know that the X3 engine doesn't fully support multi-core CPU's).
I just wanted to point out that a graphically intense game like this should be stressing the gpu a bit more, like it does with Reunion.

This seems due to some inefficient coding somewhere. Someone created a script which deleted all ships and stations in the entire universe, so it was just him alone in a single sector, and it was still randomly quite laggy. I am constantly refreshing the news page with high hopes of it saying the new patch is out, but alas not, so far.

I just wanted to hop in and say I've noticed the same thing. I run the game at max possible settings and 1900x1200 resoluation, 8xAA 16AF and my GPU utilization using gpu-z and monitoring BOTH of my 4870 x2's cores WAS around 20-30% when I first fired up TC.

Now the GPU on both cores sits idle at 0% with a few spikes into the 1% range. Literally, my GPU is sitting around twiddling it's thumbs. Now while I expected that TC wouldn't be a GPU dependent game, I didn't expect a 3.8GHZ QUAD CORE to be a limiting factor. You can't buy any cpu faster then mine (STOCK) so that can't be use as an excuse.

I really hope they find the solution to these slow downs.

Everyone keep in mind the X3 engine is over three years old. Don't expect it to tax your DX10 class GPU like more recent games will. Like I said earlier even with gobs of AA and AF my GTX260 is on cruise control with this game.

That said I think X3:R and X3:TC still have excellent graphics, especially considering the very low GPU requirements. No other space sim comes close IMO.

Hi, after looking at my graphics card as the issue to system crashes during gameplay, i found this little nugget which (after 3 hours no crashes, and good enough framerates) seemingly has solved my issue!

Even if that did fix the problem, it wouldn't be a good solution for me as I'd be using two gpu's at 800mhz. My room would become a toaster oven. Besides I'm guessing the problem was to do with your gpu going back and forth between 2d/3d clocks which mine doesn't do.

On a side note, you may want to fix your sig. I'm fairly certain you aren't running a 2.4MHz quad core

 You are correct :)

Actually, i might reload my other profile with the CPU clocked up to 3.4GHz(better ;)) as see what happens. Im happy with 15-20 FPS in busy sectors on SETA 1000x though.

So maybe the flicking between 500MHz and 750MHz is what causes the freeziing, and forcing our Cards to pick one and stick with it makes the game (and the card) much happier :?:

I think this might be a real issue... I have the worst performance with Terran Conflict than any other game, I wouldn't even call it playable (Call of Duty 4 runs flawlessly) New Game and not much going on in the single explored sector and depending on what's on screen, anywhere from 4 frames per second, to well over 40 if Nothing but a jumpgate is in front of me... It seems that the Video Card isn't being used at all... from what I can tell

Shaders to High, Textures to High, or both on low, there's no difference in performance, at all, for me, which makes me think the poor performance isn't related to my video card (X1650 with 512meg) It's like models have more poly's than the engine can handle, yet I have a 2.1ghz where the recommended is just a 2ghz, surely 100mhz difference wouldn't be the difference of Playable and completely unacceptable, now I have only 2gigs of RAM but I don't think RAM is an issue at all here either, I can put everything that's going on in the sector to my back, and it'll run smooth as can be, but when I have a lot on screen (Mostly that damn Terracorp HQ) Is when the framerate dies a horrible death

Forgot to mention, Other than Siezewell (Which is my favorite sector, yet still runs around 15 FPS), Reunion, unless there's a complete mess of 100+ ships fighting it out, Runs perfectly fine, I reinstalled Reunion from Steam and picked the humble merchant start, just like I did with TC, and they were almost Identicle, ship location, asteroid count, the Mine in the bottom left of the screen, yet TC ran that at 6 Frames per second, and Reunion ran it at 37, There's something severely wrong with how Terran Conflict is optimized, But the game is new, and Egosoft hasn't let me down yet, just as long as they acknowledge that there is an issue I'll be happy to wait for a patch

Not so sure, I'm running a Quad core at 3.5ghz with 8gb of ram and two GTX280's which stay at their rated clock and still get crap for FPS as outlined in my thread @ http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=220154

GPU use is almost nill unless I'm at the opening screen, then both GPUs in the SLI are slammed.

Looks like some kind of computational handicap built into the game at this point, nothing hardware/software/driver/etc wise.

I to have noticed my gpu is almost completly idle while in game. iv also noticed if im not looking at anything (ie black space) i get 100 - 120 FPS but while attempting to dock at terracorp hq i slowed to 20-25 and this is on my new start only 22 game hours in, which on this start i have taken all the advice on these forums disabled waptunnels/medium textures ect but i still get massive slowdown just from static stations, i cant imagine what a big battle would be like. :(

o i just remembered its not only the new stations, while on an escort mission last night the target passed by an argon trading station and while the station was in view my fps halved, turn away and it jumps back up again, i know i should see some hit as the game has to render the station but a loss of 70 fps for one station IMO is too much this led me to run gpuz while playing to log the gpu usage and my gtx260 is hardley used at all in nearly 2 hours gaming it spiked at about 25% there are obviously some very serious issues in this game i just hope we get a fix before i become that annoyed with the game that i forget it and go play someting else which i really dont want to do as x has been part of my life for so long i hope this is not the dissapointing end to what could have been the greatest series iv ever played PLEASE Ego fix the performance issue and i will be a very happy pilot .

I disabled my onboard soundcard and installed drivers for my X-Fi Xtreme Audio and started using it instead, just to see if it would at the very least gain a few frames per second, but nope, no change... I really think it's a GPU problem now, it's just not being used, but I think it's just certain Video Cards

I can confirm,
I'm using a ATI4870HD and my entire GPU sits around 0%
I can also say I had this problem with *Age of Conan*
some people have performance issues especially us ATI users and the GPU sat around 20% on that game and a select few Nvidia users.

so maybe thats something to take into consideration.
they have had almost 1000 years to terraform Aldrin, why are they all still sitting around a giant rock?

there's a few specific graphical effects (the ppc weapon projectile iirc) that might cause mild usage in your graphics card, but otherwise it _is_ going to the cpu limited :)

nevertheless, it shouldn't be that bad. It's running fine on my e6400 core2duo, (I have since overclocked to 2.8GHz, but it was running fine anyway) so there's something else going on here, that isn't just a case of "the game has a really badly coded script" or similar. I think it's something, or many things, in the engine that work exceptionally poorly with certain combinations of hardware.

fortlong: did you try asherBen's solution relating to clock speeds?

gregOP: I agree it's unlikely to apply, but could you try it anyway, just as a sanity check?

I'm at work at the moment, but when I get home this evening I'll do a compare and contrast on my setup, to see if I'm getting different gpu load levels (I'd expect somewhat higher loads anyway, as my card's an 8800gts640). I can say (because I have 2 screens and run a monitor app on the second one) that the game pushes one cpu to about 80-90% and the other one to about 60%.

Run a program that monitors what files are being accessed while X3TC is running you may start to see why the CPU is so clogged up, it is not just those adverts spooling to those floating ad boards or the music stream but some files are being accessed 100's and in some case 1000's of times a second, none of this happens on this scale in X3R.

This may not be the whole cause but it is not helping, it is starting to smell like some scripts going into endless small loops.

Yeah, after reading around the forum it does appear the game engine is just accessing certain files that it doesn't need to access, too much. Which explains the HD access and skipping from time to time as well.

Just a side note, I finally made it up to the terran territory and I found my GPU started to get used, around 30% on each core. So at least that sector is somewhat utilizing my GPU :)

A little update:
First of all, I think that the 500MHz/750MHz is just caused by the gpu idling and the ATI power-saving utility kicking in. It hasn't caused any crashes so it doesn't bother me that much, it was just an oddity that I've noticed.

I did some more testing, and discovered that the opening menu is taxing the graphics card. (gpu-load 83%)
In game, I've seen the same gpu-load of 0%, until I decided to fly off into deep space. With no objects in font of me, the gpu-load rose to about 30% and stayed there. The moment I turned around, it was 0% again, with the occasional spike. The sector was Brennan's Triumph.

How to overclock my graphic card without risking damage?
I have never done it? What shoudl I do before doing overclocking. I have only updated my drivers and made disc defrag.
