Several Questions

Post by shamas_the_wise_shaman »

----- ADDING TURRETS TO SHIPS -----

I am using the Text Editor from X2-Editor, and I get the feeling that additional turrets can be added to a ship just by modifying the text file. I have a few ideas how, but can anyone tell me how, with enough details for me to be able to do it myself.

----- CHANGING GUN TYPES FITTABLE TO TURRETS -----

Using the above editor, it is possible to change the weapon types fittable to the main guns. I don't see a way to change the guns fittable to the turrets. Is there a way, and can someone please tell me.

----- RENAMING STATIONS -----

Throughout the X2 Universe, there are generic stations with unique names, such as the TerraCorp HQ. How do you do this in X2-Editor OR the in-built Galaxy Editor

Thanks for any help in advance

----- ADDING TURRETS TO SHIPS -----
It's not that simple as modifying the text file alone. You have to edit the scene file, position the turrets and corresponding waapons. Remember to count the lines accurately. When you're satisfied with the model, select the ship in the TextEditor, switch to the tab 'Turrets'. Now click on 'Add turret'. You need the main cockpit and up to 6 turrets (no more). You have to use the corresponding body of the turret and the line (the 'path') from the scene file. The same is true for the weapons. Remember that each turret can have no more than 4 weapons except the last one (I don't know of any limit).

----- CHANGING GUN TYPES FITTABLE TO TURRETS -----
This can only be done in the file TCockpits. The entries in this file are the ones you select when adding turrets to an ship in the TShips. This file can be edited with the TextEditor too. Remember, if you change the fittable weapons for an turret, it will be changed on every ship using this type of turret. But you can easily add new 'cockpits', i.e. new turrets, and use the new turrets on the ships you want.

----- RENAMING STATIONS -----
This is simple: In the Galaxy Editor of Doubleshadows X2-Editor, select the station. On the right side you see the panel with coordinates etc. Right click and choose "Add property". Somewhere there's a property named "Description". Enter the id code from the t-file which corresponds to the name you want. Never tried this in the built-in galaxy editor, I don't know if there's a similar function.

Scene File?

Post by shamas_the_wise_shaman »

You mentioned a 'Scene File.' What program(s) do I need to get in order to make these changes?

The 'Scene'-file is a .bod-file in the cut-folder.
Additional information on scene files can be found in this thread:

What programs are needed? It depends on your patience.
If your lucky, you have 3DS Max or GMax, so you can edit the scene files in one of that programs.
You can also change the scene file with a normal text editor, but this is a long process. Setting the position values in the scene file, fire up X2, look at the model, back to the text editor and make the necessary changes to the positions, start X2 and so on. It can be done, but you need a lot of patience.

Thanks

Thanks for that, doesn't sound too hard. Time consuming, but not hard.

You seem to be knowlegable about modding in X2, so perhaps you could give me some advice.

I have sent PMs to Harlock776 and Pogi requesting permission to use some of the models from their mods (Top Gun and Rebels Ridge) However, I have not yet received any response. Is it okay here to release a mod using someone else's meshes, as long as credit is given where due, or do you usually only do so if you receive explicit permission to use them? At the moment, I am going to incorporate them, and just hope that I receive permission before it is time to release my mod. Any advice?

I suggest you to wait for them to approve. Both Pogi and Harlock are pretty regular visitors of a forum, they'll see your message soon.

usage

I didn't see any pm for me but if you want to use somethin from me mod it's all good just remember to give credit to the original author of whatever you use when you post your mod somewhere. I didn't make everything in my mod it's actually made up of many other people stuff and some of my own stuff too.

Modding X2 is incredibly tedious work and it all depends on what exactly you want to do but you won't really know what you want to do until you start to do it and that can get very frustrating lol.

The main things needed for modding are things like interest, motivation and enthusiasm. When you run dry of those you won't feel like modding anything for a while.
