The modifications are:
Vanguard - Faster, better energy for weapons, less cargo
Raider - Fast, Nimble, low cargo
Hauler - Slow, poor weapon energy, large cargo
Sentinel - Better shields, slow
Super freighter - huge cargo, slow
Miner - fits mining laser, good cargo
Pirate - different weapons and shields to basic
So a Nover Raider has a top speed of 145 (over 114 for the basic Nova), accelerates at 13 (not 12), steers 104 (over 89) but can only hold 212 cargo (not 224). Basically they are set up so you can 'customise' your ship to your playing style. Raider for fast combat, Vanguard as balanced fighters, Sentinel for defence etc. The Pirate versions (capturable, not for sale) carry better weapon load outs and are usually faster but with slightly weaker shields.

Remember in X2 you could get the suped up versions of ships during assination missions, well this has been taken to another level. Some variants have better speed, some better shilds or more cargo space. I think there is a complete list on here somewhere. Also check out the new supper fraters. Just what you need to max the proffitsss from a SPP.
What do you do if you see a space man?

Yeah, ship looks in X3 all have very little in common with those of X2.
Clearly most of the changes must have been needed to make use of the docking clamps. I don't care much for the TS/TP looks. They all more or less are flying logs.
I just bought an Osprey and when I saw & piloted it decided that I'd put it on patrol. It's in line with the rest of the Teladi ship looks I guess.
I guess they all got a little design changes due to new docking arrangements..
