Nortons and ZoneAlarm
Here's the problem. I downloaded ZoneAlarm, because my pc didn't come with a firewall, so figure, what the heck, its free. Two days later, when I shut down my machine, its not shutting down. Get's stuck with a black screen, and just the curser sitting there.
So, I'm thinking, having Nortons, came with the pc, and Zone Alarm, are they conflicting? And screwing up my windows XP.
I removed Zone Alarm, and no problems.
Either that or Norton's, racketteers that they are, want me to buy thier firewall?
Any suggestions guys, other then buying a Norton's firewall. Cause not crazy about the program.
Thanks,
Lisa

Just a guess here, I haven't used Norton in a long time and I don't have XP, but it could be that one of the Nortons applications is trying to check to see if there's an active network connection and zone alarm is catching it, trying to display the popup alert but as windows is trying to shut down it's just freezing everything up.
Try setting zonealarm to the mode where it learns what connections to allow automatically, and then shut the machine down. If that works you should be able to see a new program listed as allowed in ZoneAlarm, and you can set everything back to normal
hope this helps, but as I say it's just a guess

Er...if you have Windows XP then your machine did TOO come with a firewall, since it's built-in on that OS. Try getting the properties on the network connection you use to access the Internet--under the Advanced tab is a checkbox saying "Protect my computer or network by limiting access yada yada yada", which turns on the built-in firewall. It's not as configurable as stuff like ZoneAlarm, but it does the job!Torch wrote:Here's the problem. I'm using both Norton, and Zonealarm too.
I had a similar problem, not exactly the same, but it sound's like the same thing. with Zonealarm running, tlick on the Norton update, and then you will get the Zonealarm popup, whick ask's should it allow Norton access to the web. Tick the alway's remember option, and then yes.
Should solve your problem.
Good luck.
P.S. the XP firewall is shite, so don't bother with it.

paul, i once read somewhere tha the built in XP firewall offered very little protection as opposed to others such as zone alarm etc.
i turned it off anyway, i dont really wanna use the built in stuff.
I installed Sygate after, havent had a problem with it, and its stopped many attacks on my system.
and now with a freeBSD box connected, and routing i hopefully should be alot safer

I don't believe that to be true--the only security disadvantage the XP firewall has over ZoneAlarm is that, being built into the OS, it's a natural hacker target. Of course, if you can point me to a site where they've actually proved the XP firewall is crap (e.g. not just "It's Microsoft, it must be shite") then I may revise my opinion.Commander Gold wrote:paul, i once read somewhere tha the built in XP firewall offered very little protection as opposed to others such as zone alarm etc.

Hi Torch
Open Network Connections in Control Panel.
Right-click the connection you want to firewall and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
Click the Advanced tab.
On the Advanced tab of the properties dialog box select Protect My Computer And Network By Limiting Or Preventing Access To This Computer From The Internet.

Well, it allows ALL outbound traffic as far as I know--it just blocks inbound stuff.fireblade wrote:well there is the usual stuff about it letting progs send info to microsoft

I found the xp firewall. Are you guys telling me that it is not adaquate protection?
Cause if its not, I'm going to have to go buy one. Cause don't want to be out here without protection. And my XP Pro, doesnt like Zone Alarm. I tried running it again, doing all the stuff you guys told me to, but system wont shut down.
Thanks for all the help.
