3D Renderer?

Post by ISammael »

Okay, to preface, I've never modded anything before in my life and consider myself dumber than dummy on even how to install it. I could read a guide, and I will when it isn't O-dark-thirty in the morning, but I want to pose a question before I hit the hay.

I would like to start rendering ships for my own little enjoyment, just to see what they would look like and stretch my 'artistic' talents a bit. The problem is, I'm poorer than dirt and don't know what to look for. Those of you who have created ship designs for modding, what have you used? Is there a free DL somewhere that I could try to learn? A Google search gave me more questions than answers, and would probably cost me money anyways.

Thanks ahead of time for your answers, sorry if this is a repeated post, cheers on a great game, and wish y'all the best of luck. Peace.

I think gmax is free for 30 days or longer to try and it's a free download from autodesk.com you should try that first. It's basically a sort of cut down version of 3dsmax and there is an importer/exporter for it to use with X2 and X3 available at doubleshadow's website. Name of the exporter is dbox and it works well with those that use gmax.

Check out doubleshadow's site for more info...

Gmax is completely free, but it is also no longer supported by Autodesk. It was supposed to be no longer available after early October last year too, but the community complained and it is still available from Turbosquid at http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax. Get the tutorial and help downloads as well. 3dsmax would probably be the best program for the job, but with its $3,500 USD price tag its not an option for most people. And Gmax should get the job done well enough.
I'm not disappointed in you; I'm disappointed in myself, for believing in you.
