Here's a neat trick that I didn't at least find on "search". Maybe it's been discussed 2 years ago, but who cares.
Fastest way I have found to increase number of level 6 AT ships in my fleet is to assign Teladi Harriers to basic farms. Yeah, M5 for trader. They can haul about 100 energy crystals per go and can carry soy beans and what not also.
Since they really have to haul ass to keep the station supplied (recommend 1 distance max), they're at level 6 before you know it.
This way I've been able to train sell-capable ATs very rapidly for my merchant fleet.

True, using Advanced Trade (BPH) in smaller capacity ships increases the pilots rank quite fast, they're also useful for 'storing' Trade Mk3 pilots.
