Tutorial: How To Unpack your Game for mods

Post by ShadowTek »

This thread is to teach everyone how to Unpack there game so they can use mods created by the community.

The Post below this one shows how to use my Mods

Step 1:

Download StoneD's X2/XT PatcherV09b, you can get it here:
The Commander

Step 2:

Run Program Click on Utilities

Step 3:

Click Unpack DAT
Navigate to your X2 - The Threat directory default is C:\Program Files\Enlight\X2 - The Threat

Step 4:

Pick 01.cat, The program will then begin unpacking 01.dat be patient it will take awhile.

Step 5:

Repeated process for 02.cat and 03.cat

Step 6:

open explorer and go to your X2 - The Threat directory (default is C:\Program Files\Enlight\X2 - The Threat)
you will see 3 Folders called XData-01, XData-02 and XData-03.
Step 7:

Go into XData-01 directory and select ALL the folders in this directory and move them all to your C:\Program Files\Enlight\X2 - The Threat directory.
If a box pops up asking if you wish to overwrite existing data click "Yes to all"
Step 8:

Repeate this prosses for all folders in the XData-02 and XData-03 folders
NOTE: You MUST do this in order do XData-01 first XData-02 second and XData-03 last allowing each one to overwrite existing data.
Step 9:

Delete empty XData-01, XData-02 and XData-03 Folders
Delete or move 01.cat, 02.cat and 03.cat
Delete or move 01.dat, 02.dat and 03.dat
Delete or move XData-01.idx, XData-02.idx and XData-03.idx

Step 10:

Your almost there, now you must unpack your .PCK files that you want to modify or replace due to mods you may want to use. To do this run StoneD's unpacker, click Utilities click Decompress PCK go to your "Types" Directory default is C:\Program Files\Enlight\X2 - The Threat\types and choose the file you wish to decompress, TShips.PCK is a very commonly modified file for mods, so choose TShips.PCK

Step 11:

Look in your C:\Program Files\Enlight\X2 - The Threat\types Directory where you just decompressed the TShips file, you will notice that there are now 2 TShips files, TShips.pck and TShips.TXT, you must remove the TShips.pck file so the game will default to the TShips.txt file, I highly recommend backing up ALL files before you modify them.

NOTE: You do NOT have to re-compress these files, the .txt files work just fine

You are now ready to add mods to your game :) keep in mind that if a mod adds multiple files to the "types" directory, you must remove the pck versions, for example if a mod adds TShips.txt, TBullets.txt and TLasers.txt, you must remove TShips.pck, TBullets.pck and TLasers.pck

Back these files up!! in case you dont like the changes made.

Also sometimes moddlers will re-pack these files into pck files, make sure you backup the originals first before overwriteing them.

Also some moddlers may pack there Mods into a Dat/Cat file, Though this may be handy, I personally like acsess to all files, to unpack these mods simply unpack them like you did the original 3 Dat files, it will create a folder named XData-??, ?? being whatever they named there dat/cat files, for example if they named it 04.cat and 04.dat it will create a folder called XData-04, Then simply move folders in the XData-04 folder to your C:\Program Files\Enlight\X2 - The Threat Folder.
Make Sure before you do the above step that the new mod wont overwrite a previously installed mod or any modding youve done or you will lose all your hard work.

Thats all there is to it, happy moddleing :)

How to use my mods:

In order to use some of my mods, you will have to do a little editing, for a example I'll use my 17 Gun Split Raptor as a example.

To add the 17 Gun Raptor to your game click the above link.

Notice the long string of data? This is the info that must be entered in your TShips file, to do this:

1. click above link and Copy the "Blueprint" Data to your clip board.

2. open up your TShips file and serch for SS_SH_S_M1
NOTE:
a. The S means Split and M1 is Carrier
b. All the info listed BEFORE SS_SH_S_M1 is the Data for the Split Carrier on this line.
c. turnning off word warp in note pad may help, since each ship has its own line in the TShips file.

3. Select all info in TShips file for SS_SH_S_M1 and replace it with the info from above link.

4. Save file and enjoy!

Dont bump threads, this is 2 years old and the commanders site isnt around anymore...
"There must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero, From this it follows that the population of the universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the product of a deranged imagination" - Douglas Adams

Funny that. When you dig up a thread that's two years old that quite often happens.
