After quite a few battles with ID, MD and PSG's, no slowdown caused by the weapons now. Although it's still sluggish in any system with lots of roids.

I bought a 6600GT 128MB to replace my Ti4800 64MB GPU and then bought X3. Installed it, patched to 1.3 and ran it. Moving through the vacuum of space more closely resembled trudging through mud. Performance was unacceptable. I only run the game at the lowet settings with AA etc. turned off.

I installed 1.31 and what an improvement! I'm going to add another GB of RAM - start the game in windowed mode and what the free RAM counter drop!!

Game Day 2
> Property Screen - r - ships tab - now displays correctly. Thank you. No extra lines.
> Selling equipment to an equipment dock that does not normally sell it fixed, ie not being held in stock. For example sell dragonfly missile to an argon equipment dock.
> CTD - 3x in Teladi sectors when in sector with an Osprey.... very nice. First time I had it on F3 to watch it and CTD. Second it was in sector but not on F3 - just too close. 3rd time I was in Lucky Planets and had hit "." just before CTD.
> Can dock with Split at Shameless Creature 34%
> Can dock with Paranid at UnHoly Nomad 46%
_ Not that I did the last two, I waited until my rank had improved.

> No freeze to date.

Yeah baby, Yeah!

Before this beta patch i was only able to play ~5 - 15 mins before a lockup occurred. Installed the patch, 19.5hrs of gameplay without a problem so far.

Good work guys thank you so much that was driving me nutz.

Unfortunatly because this is really the first time i have been able to get anywhere in this game i made a heck of alot of progress and im not looking forward to loosing my save games..

Is there anything stopping me from using this patch till i beat this game or is there any known mission stopping bugs or whatever that will make me use the next official patch.

ok, i have been running 1.3.1BETA for a couple days now. here are my observations:

static/popping audio issues resolved
overall framerate improvement
psg's are better, but still slow me down a little, other weapons never slowed
never had freezing, and ctd's fixed since 1.3.1
have some asteroid problems: i was chasing some pirates through mi-tons refige with my destroyer from an external view, and changed back to teh main view just in time to see that i was heading for a few small asteroids with no time to evade. i jumped into the forward turret and opened fire, destroying many of the asteroids, but i still hit many more, and ground to a halt finaly just before my shields fell. i then switched to an external view to look for a way out, and noticed that several of the small asteroids were being rendered improperly. two halvs of the sphere were sepparated by a distance about half as long as my destroyer, and the texture was being stretched across that distnace to produce something like a stone log. i believe this to be a new problem with 1.3.1, but honestly i have never been in that situation before. this is the only graphical anomoly i have ever had in x3.
i dont realy have problems with asteroids slowing me down, but i find savage spur to be incredibly laggy. this is probably due, in part, to teh massive comples i have built there. i have a complex producing AHEPT, APSG, BPSG, APPC, GPPC, APBE, BPBE, AFAT, BFAT, 25Mj shields, 125Mj shields, 1Gj shields, Advanced Sattelites, laser towers, Space weed, and space fuel along with all the necessary supporting resources in sufficient volume to keep the station from ever being undersupplied. u can do the math on that :P
anyway, that sector first became bad when 1.3.1 began spawning yaki in that sector. since then, i have killed enough of them to make them hate me, and now that 1.3.1BETA allows them to leave the sector, i can keep them thinned out by simply guarding the west gate in emperor mines (which conveniently raises my reputation with the paranid. however, even with the yaki down to a constant count of <10, the savage spur is still incredibly laggy. i find that if the sector is too laggy (<1fps) if i jump to the other gate (jump without changing sectors) then the sector will load again ane be much more efficient, but still very slow. this points to a memory fragmentation issue. if you do not have a program for memory defragmentation implemented, you might want to look into it. i know some other games (like doom3 and quake4) use suck programs. however, i do realize this may be way beyond the scope of a patch.
i have found laser towers to be surprisingly hard on the system. as i mentioned before, i have placed guards on teh west gate of emperor mines to attack the yaki that come out of savage spur. i also have an equipment dock immediately in front of that gate. to aid my two corvetts in attacking the yaki i placed 18 laser towers off to teh side of the equipment dock. this dropped the frame rate to jsut below smooth, and emperor mines is generaly a very fast running sector for me. this was surprising because i can jump into xenon sectors with hundreds of ships swarming me without any noticable performance loss. i suppose what im getting at here is that i do not believe it to be a poly-count problem.
finaly, the beta introduces a problem with kyons. iv only had a chance to see gama kyons since the patch, so i cant say anythign about alphas and betas. the kyon beams now have a problem with depth. that is, they are now being renered "always on bottom." so if firing on a station, and they have to pass in front of a large section of the station before finaly hitting it at teh center, then the section of the beam that should be passing in front is being forced behind the station, leaving only the section of the beam passing through open space visible.

now for some system specs:
athalon XP 2200+ running at 1.8GHz
1Gb of 266MHz DDR
Geforce 6600LE
SB Audigy Platinum, running in 5.1 digital mode

I just found a strange glitch in the 1.3.1 patch, my 1 MgG Shield production station in Argon prime, is being swarmed by 50 or so civilian and yaki ships, all trying to dock. Stranger still is that the yaki don’t appear hostel to me or my station, but they are being shot at by the Argon authorities. There is lot of fire power flying around, and a lot of lag. I know I had one or two of docks filled, and was running the seta for a few hours. My station has nothing more to sell but maybe I can try and make them not want to dock there. Just more strange than anything.

Overall the patch seems to be working fine, the black screen after gating is fixed for sure, nice job.

Great work, Egosoft. Took care of my freezing issue. I had a saved game about 1 min before the game would freeze, and once I loaded the BETA patch, the problem was fixed.

I like all of the civ. ships flying around again.

Haven't noticed any freezing with explosions either! Looks like a down right playable game again.

argh, looks like i spoke too soon on that earlier post. tonight i experienced two ctd's. first one was when loading a saved game. the second was just after completing a bullitin board mission, jumping my destroyer to emperor mines, and then jumoing myself. it crashed on the sector load. i have experienced ctds in teh past on saved game loads, and tat seemed fixed with 1.3.1, but i never experienced a mid game ctd until 1.3.1BETA.

I have been using the beta for about 1 hour so far. No problems to report yet!

However, I scripted in the tractor beam and loaded it on the centaur, mammoth, nemesis and nothing happends. It sounds like weapons fire when you are close enough to a station and hold the the fire key. however I cannot seem to push, drag, pull a station in any direction.

I've tried it on my own stations and argon stations. nothing happends except with the argons. They think your attacking them and then you have to deal with the argon military :(

Has anyone else been able to get the tractor beam to work? if yes, then please explain how! I have looked under the commands to see if there is an option but.. I haven't found any!

That is your problem right there. That PSU is just not up to the job of running anything more than a 1 gig athlon, let alone an overclocked 2 gig one.

X3 is more taxing on your system and that is most likely causing your CTD's and random reboots.

Get yourself a good PSU, 550w should be sufficient. I would bet my bottom dollar that it will fix your CTD's and your reboots.

ok, I tested out the patch a for 5 minutes (Hoped the special commands MK I saw the asteroids now but oh well). Anyway, had a few micro hicups during SETA travel, Argon prime Shipyard sent out its civilian minions in very long lines.

Still can't see ION D firing from my front guns, I can only see it in the targeting screen for some reason.

Mass drivers fine.

Don't know about storyline or PSGs.

Other than that things seem to run a tad bit faster in regular sectors.

yup *tottaly agrees* sounds like a simple "out of juice" problem :)
gpu and cpu just dont get enough power to maintain a stable state.

shortage of power results in a reboot etc :)

500watts should be enough, I have a 500w version, and im running a:

-Gigabyte n8 MB
-Athlon 64 3500+
-1 gb ram
-1x XFX 7800 GTX geforce
-1x IDE HD
-3x Sata
-1x DVD Writer combi
-1x DVD reader
-1x Audigy

works perfectly for me

Thx for testing this issue. Then it must be something with my savegame. I'll wait for the official next patch and try again. Hopefully it will work then.
Now after about 12 hours I haven't noticed any other problems than that with the hiring of STs....

Ok ive been playing x3 with the beta patch for 2 days now (13 hours roughly) and i still have the roid problem (very big slow down in sectors with loads of asteroids) the weapons issues seem to be alot better, psg's and md's dont cause slow down, the ion d problem i had is still there(if i have 1 installed i get graphics, if its 2 then no graphics) but ive fired and been fired at with md's and psg's and the game is ok, just the roids, but only if im pointing at them, if i point the ship away from them then the game returns to normal speeds, so from my point of view the asteroids need sorting, id like to keep them as they add to the game, but i cant do anything in an asteroid field due to the slow down, other than that the game is great :D and much fun to play.

Patch 1.3.1 Beta

Post by AndyChristian »

Everything was working fine for me until I installed patch 1.3.
It was ok for about 10 mins before it froze. Now it freezes after about 1 minute. I have tried earlier save games, but it doesn't make a difference, the game just freezes after about 1 minute, wherever I am and whatever I'm doing.
I have installed the new Beta patch, but it has made no change.
Please help!!
I was enjoying the game, but have been unable to play it now since 1.3 came out.

Strange how X2 and X3 taxes my system that badly, while Far Cry, Doom 3, ect, doesnt. I remember when we used to be able to run 286's off a single lump of coal. Regardless, I just ordered a Hercules 450 watt PS, and will be installing it sometime next week. Thanks for everyone who gave their thoughtful input. I hope it helps others. Tootles!

I’m not doing much with X3 ATM but thought I’d try the new beta patch. This is what I found:

To reduce freezes ages ago, I had recoded and made the mp3 files smaller (making them smaller, NOT recoding them did stop my “guaranteed” freeze, but I had freezes after this time). To test the patch I put back the original, big mp3 files. I also normally turn all processes off. However, to start with, to test the patch, I only turned off anti-virus and ZoneAlarm. I have also used the Madborris stuff, but I do not want to undo all that work! (the game has frozen after doing Madborris stuff as well though).

A couple of days ago I went to a sector where, recently, I often had a freeze. I left it running for a while and did not get a freeze

Today, I had been using the computer all day, and just started up X3, then:

I ran the old “guaranteed” freeze game position and it did not freeze. However, around the place where it used to freeze, fps dropped to 3 i.e. it looked like it was about to stop, but then got going again.

I had dreadful difficulty in the story line where there is a battle with the Yaki in Cloudbase South West. Before the patch, I guess I got about 0.5 to 1 fps and my lasers did no damage to even small Yaki ships. So I tried this save game position several times, but I put the small mp3s back for this:
This time, during a fight I got 2-4 fps and my weapons did have an effect;
I rebooted the computer and got 9-10 fps;
I re-did the old “guaranteed” freeze point, then re-did the Yaki mission and got 6-7 fps;
I then turned all process off, re-did Yaki mission and got 9-10 fps.

Every time I did the Yaki mission and went back to the menu screen, it had changed from its silver colour to gold! Don’t know what that’s about!!

So, it looks like the patch has made a speed improvement (but it would be nice to get more than 10!!);
It may have sorted my freezes, but I’ve been here before i.e. made a change and it’s been fine for a while, then I get a freeze. I’ll start to believe it after many more hours!

To optimise things it may be still be worth:
Turning everything off on low to medium level computers;
Re-booting before starting X3;
Re-booting after playing for a while.

I’m running a 2700XP with 1G 3200DDR, ATI 9600XT, no AA etc, Shader low, but Texture high (surprisingly, changing the texture settings makes no difference to fps).

LOL! thats all i can say!

spent the last few weeks reinstalling windows over and over again, trying different codec configurations convinced my pc was dead! just noticed this forum!

the game crash's while loading for me about 50% of the time since installing 1.3. im quite relieved to hear im not alone, dont think my pc can take many more hard re-boots!

anyway, that sums it up really. im one of the people suffering from codec problems...despite the fact my codecs are the same as i have always used to play x3 :P the beta patch made no difference what so ever (sorry!)
according to "directshow viewer" my codecs are perfect for playing x3...but theyre obviously not.

looking forwards to the next patch!
One suggestion tho, if i could roll back my 1.3 savegames into 1.21 save games, i could reinstall x3, and play in the mean time, then just update my game and save files when the new patch is released :)

luv ya! ;)
