Oh, I just finished replying to you in another thread, I recognize the activemovie mention ;)

Anyway, I posted ideas there so won't duplicate here. Music looping is very indicative, of where the focus should be. I would suggest the basic things like a media player reinstall, but very likely there is a file version mismatch that's not as easy to fix by reinstalling DX9 or MP, but if we get to that road we can cross it later.

Well, all game bugs aside, many issues are due to directshow filter merits and file mismatching of drivers, DX9, and Media Player and I'm betting your issue is one of those. Hopefully you read this thread in some detail and did the basics already. If you ran Driver Cleaner and reinstalled drivers then verify that you have the proper file versions of Media Player 10. Here is how you can verify file versions quickly.

THIS IS SPECIFICALLY FOR MEDIA PLAYER 10 FILE VERSIONS:
Open Windows Explorer, browse to windows\system32\dllcache
(Make sure you go to Tools\Folder options, and check show hidden files and uncheck hide extensions and hide protected files.) Now you should be able to see everything.
Right click in a blank area of the the right pane, click view and click on details.
In the right pane, right click on the heading where it says name, size, type. At the bottom of the list that opens, select 'more'. Scroll down and check "File Version". Now the file version shows up and if you click on the "File Version" header it will sort files by file version.
If you see any of the following files in this picture at a version lower than the one in the picture, then THAT is a problem.

Here is the picture of how the windows media files should appear with Media player 10 installed, in the DllCache:
Windows Media 10 versions

Dllcache is Windows FileProtection that overwrites your windows\system32 files with these and if they are older than the program files being installed that is a problem. In that case you will have to get the proper version files from extracting the windows media installer to a temporary folder.

You will then need to manually copy the "appropriate" version 10 files "in this order" to:
windows\system32\dllcache
windows\system32

NOTE: Do not install any additional files into DLLCache that don't already exist there.

Then repeat the file copy in that order. Refresh the folders and check that File protection actually allowed the file copy to take, and that the new version 10 file is in both "windows\system32" and "windows\system32\dllcache". If it didn't allow the copy, repeat the file copying until Windows accepts the new versions without reverting it back to the old files.

If you see any other files in DLLcache that are still version 9.0.0.2980 OR 9.00.00.3250 they should be updated from the Windows Media 10 extracted files.

Finally if you checked this over and found no other media player 9 files and it didn't fix your issue then the DX9c uninstall, and reinstall from the CD/DVD may be the way to go.

I am also including the proper DX9c file versions list here for future reference. If any of the following files exist in DLLCache are an older version they also need to be replaced with the proper version from an extracted DX9c. Happy DirectX Uninstall and reinstalling should fix this problem, but JUST IN CASE here are the versions anyway. Do the copying, as shown above, to dllcache then system32 and repeat in that order until the new files replace the old.

So it looks like we the consumers are now doing all the programming for Egosoft. I can't believe that I have to go through all this just to get this game to play (which I don't intend to btw)

It's a hidden system folder by default in XP...
Set the option under "hidden files and folders" to "show hidden files and folders" and...
then uncheck "hide extensions for known file types"
and uncheck "hide protected operating system files"
Also make sure "display the contents of system folders" is checked.

That should do it.

That approach works for some, then there's music, movies, sound effects. It doesn't always work because it is trying to treat the symptoms not the cause like addressing the cough, when an antibiotic is needed for a bronchial infection. It may work until some newer codecs get loaded that take priority over them, from anything like creative software, PowerDVD, and a host of other apps.

But at times all people want is to try a quick simple fix for codec issues, so it is good to have it in the thread.

Shouldn't this thread get a sticky? I'm another user who recently bought a ridiculously expensive computer followed shortly by X3 and experiences horrid frame rates in this game even on lowest graphical settings. It's bad enough that this issue hasn't been resolved yet through a patch, but having to look hard to find information like this doesn't make much sense... I haven't actually tried any of the ideas in here but I plan to.

Thanks for the research MadBoris!

Another thread (CTD while switching targets) pointed to here and it seemed the codes was indeed my problem. Or I hope it was:

I finally managed to get the CTD consistent. After loading and undocking I just had to:
- 'target nearest enemy'. No enemies around so crossraid turned red with searching LEDs.
- 'target next object' a few times and BOOM, I see the window border of X3 and it crashes.
- sometimes had to do it a few times, but could get it crashed within 10 seconds of undocking

I tried that procedure about a dozen times, everytime messing with the codecs (running other sound drivers, installing media palayer 10), putting Windows and Microsoft codes at the top, running those tools setting the priority higher, rebooting at each step).

Last step I did was uninstall Media player 10 and removing the Media player codec from the list (standard windows configuration screen: properties of audio codecs). Reboot, restart and I can't get it to crash.

At least I hope that was the solution..I'll post again if it does crash again.

You say you uninstalled MP10, you mean you rolled back to 9, did you then reinstall it?

From my experience rolling back to 9, rolls back only some file but not all.

nha, removed it. I guess removing it leaves stuff (it left the codec).

Worked for a while, but now have the same problem

It beats me where the Media Player Codec came from, I just installed 10 again and official version 9 codec pack. Both had no effect (that particular codec didn't return and those actions didn't fix my prob either).

I'll reread your post. Maybe it'll start to make sense someday.

I will bump this up too by sayin a big "thank you" to madboris...
So much spent effort on solving the issue... and even more effort to make this accessible to the community... good guy ;)

in a couple of days I will get my new graphic card and if the patch is not out by then I propably will have to follow your instructions ;P

Reinstalling Media Player 10 should not require the version 9 codec pack. If it's the same media 9 codec pack I'm thinking of, it's actually comprised of mainly Media 10 files even though it's called 9. ;) Once you have 10 you don't want anything that says 9 anymore to avoid possible file mismatching issues, however improbable.

Before the holiday weekend there will be a tool available that will clarify and simplify things tremendously, although I am having to cut alot of features to make my deadline so some people can play over there holiday time, when codec issues stand in their way.

Enough horror for today :(

Tried removing and reinstalling 10 and verifying versions, but no luck. Also some other stuff, like messing with the order and and those merits.

Not getting very optimistic atm and wished i returned the game.

Anyway, thanks again for your help :) I'll probably just store it for a while. Don't have the energy anymore to blow off steam here (not that it'll do any good).

Only good thing that came out is a verification of the reason i mainly buy console games.

ONE more thing: is there a way to completely turn off sound? I'd like to verify that sound indeed is the problem.

Disabling it from the device manager is probably not sufficient.
Removing a soundcard probably work, but I haven't verified what X3 actually does or doesn't do in that case.

But if you also rename the soundtrack and mov folders I know it won't open those files and a large amount of directshow filters, start a new game and just fly around a system and target things and see what happens. That's what I suggest to rule out sound issues. Some have said that renaming those folders causes them crashes but not sure if you just fly around a system and target things.

Hmm, going to operate.

About soundtrack folder, renaming the soundtrack folder was one of the first things I tried. Still had CTD. Re-encoded them as well (wonder why I even tried that.

I wonder if it's the dynamic voiceover (the target identification), as it always seem to be when switching targets. Perhaps it uses a different codec? I guess those would be handled by directsounds instead of directshow, no?

It happens on a variety of targetting: ships, stations, gates. input device doesn't seem the matter either (keyb, mouse, joystick).

EDIT:
Sheesh, that filemon utility is pretty sweet. A crapload of errors by starting up X3. Ofcourse most are for trying to access a dll in the current directory and then switching to the windows directory. Could I just put a filter on X3 and then play till CTD? Wonder how big it'll get and if it would be of any use to me.
