"X3.EXE has enccountered a problem and has to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Ok. I can't even get the game to play. It goes to the screen with the X3 logo and spaceship in front of a planet. It acts like it is about to load and goes to a black full screen with a blue border at the top then to a smaller area of black in the upper left corner of the deskstop with an error message very close to.....

And that's it....I don't know what to do now. I've put the specs below but I'm not very computer savvy...hope it's enough.
Plesee Help!!!! ...and thanks in advance!
- Operating system = Windows XP Home Edition (5.1 Build 2600)
- CPU = Pentium 4 3.00GHZ (2 CPUS)
- Graphics card = Radeon X700
- Memory = 1024 MB Ram
- Sound system = Realtex HD Audio rear output
- Game version = 1.2.01
- Exact nature of the problem = See Above
- Sector location in the game and scenario =N/A
- Type of game played, i.e. plot ot non-plot = N/A

No dice. Tried DirectX and Reinstall and drivers........
Yeah...I've updated DirectX, drivers (Bios, CD-Roms, Video, Sound) and now I have just reinstalled. No dice!......The same error message keeps popping up at the same place. I don't know what else to do
...but watch football
....hehe.... I think I've had enough for today.
Thanks for your help though. I should be a little closer to finding the answer now.
Hope you are having fun too. I'm so jealous.

neaudio.ax
I cannot find a file called neaudio.ax on my computer.
Do you have any other suggestions or possible problems?

There are a number of causes for this message:
- processor is an older Athlon processor and SSE is disabled or not available
- graphics card that does not support pixel shaders (e.g. GeForce4 MX series)
- DirectX 9.0c not installed (can be installed from the DVD)
- graphics drivers are not functioning correctly (common additional symptom is no device/resolution list in the graphics options)
- recently upgraded graphics card (solution for this one only is to check "Ignore Last Settings..." checkbox)
- Nero audio tools installed (neaudio.ax interferes with correct codec operation)
Clearly the first two do not apply to you, and you have checked the last one, so checking the remaining three would be a good idea.

Still doesn't work.
- DirectX 9.0c not installed (can be installed from the DVD)
DIRECT X 9.0c is installed
- graphics drivers are not functioning correctly (common additional symptom is no device/resolution list in the graphics options)
All of the resolution options are present. Driver Catalyst 5.11 (upgraded and working for others on the boards here)
- recently upgraded graphics card (solution for this one only is to check "Ignore Last Settings..." checkbox)
Tried checking and unchecking that box......
Still doesn't work. There must be something else causing it....

If you don't mind a fairly radical test, we can eliminate another possible cause for this. If you go into your BIOS and disable the on-board sound entirely and then try again, we can eliminate this common cause of problems. If the game runs with it disabled but not with it enabled then we know the problem is somewhere in the sound subsystem.

Disabled Onboard Audio in Bios...Didn't work.
OK. I tried that and I'm getting the same error message. Does this mean it's related to the video card or something?
What should I try next?

The problem is that, as with pretty much any DirectX-related error, you get no information about what is causing the problem. If it says something like "Error opening video" then you can be pretty sure that it is a graphics driver problem, but this message means very little to anyone.
Anyway, I think the next step is for you to post a full DXDiag output here so that we can see all the relevant data about your system.

Ok here's the scoop... It looks like the 'auto saved games' are somehow corrupted. I had saved with a salvage thingie and went back to that and that started up with no problems. what I did...
-had just installed new drivers for my vid card. 8189-nv rolled back, and still had ctd's
-lowered the hardware accelleration on my sound card and tested... no joy
-used default settings in startup of X3 ( 1024/768- low/low-full screen with no boxes checked.. no joy
-checked my DX9c drivers, reinstalled said drivers no joy
-renamed neaudio.ax to neaudio.ax.old... no joy
though when I went back to the saves that I used the salvage insurance, they worked fine. So for me, it's not the video, sound, DX9 drivers, or the nero renaming thing. As far as I can tell, the auto save 'just broke' and the last three auto saves that I had now do not work. But the Salvage insur saves do work.. Oh I did not reinstall the game but I may try that as well. (pain in the ass though). I'm going to test manually saving at stations and see if those saves will work. I will post later on tonight with my results. Hope any of this helps.

Ok manual saving at stations is working fine. seems like the saves are not being corrupted. But now Im experiencing random CTD while in space. LOL Im starting to think Im cursed... I dont know what to do. I know the devs must know about this and are working on it so I will be patient. I see this game has alot of potential and I do enjoy playing plus its not in my nature to bash anything unless it really deservs it. Im sure 1. 3 should fix alot of the little bugs that people are getting now. Oh and I also upgraded to 8194 on my vid drivers and I am able to play with high settings on both shader and textures with minimal if any studdering or slowdowns. Looks like those drivers are good. Again here are my specs for comparison for any who are interested.
AMD xp 3000
2gb ddr ram @ 400 (NOTE: I turned off the swap file with the added ram.)
BFG 6600GT 128 mb
Windows XP pro /sp2

Is there a solution to this problem without buying a new graphics card?- graphics card that does not support pixel shaders (e.g. GeForce4 MX series)
I may be a knucklehead but I have searched high and low regarding the minimum requirements to run this game and have failed to find where this is listed. This would have been a "nice to know" before I spent the $50 US on this game that so far is just taking space on my HD.
I am trying my best to keep a positive attitude regarding this game because I enjoyed X2 so much.
Any help will be appreciated.

I've had that card. mx4 64mb and that is not a dx9 compliant card. You will not be able to play some of the newer games that are out now with that card. I wasnt able to play BF2 and I just upgraded to the 6600gt. Right now you should be able to find it for relatively cheap. Dont give up on X3, its a hell of a game it just needs some bugs to be squashed and you'll be ok.
