X3 my experiance!

Post by Johnny9ball »

I would like to take the time to say thank you for all the devs and mods that post regularly and help people on the boards. Having active devs here is a treat they are really committed to helping you all and everyone here should appreciate them more.

Well I finally got X3 (Tuesday) installed patched to 1.2.

I had 3 goals while installing X3 more like wishes. I wanted firstly the game to run without crashing and it runs without crashing. Second I wanted my joystick to work cause some people had joystick issues. My joystick works perfectly. Third I wanted at least 30+ fps all the time. This is where the game failed me. I exceed the minimum req by quite a bit and people with far less than my system have reported running the game smoothly. I am probably getting an average of 4-25 fps mostly in the 10-20 fps range. I am also getting dips in performance where I might not be doing anything particular and the fps drops very low then comes back up. 3.2P4E 1GB PC3200 X800XTPE

Its fairly frustrating  to exceed the min req by a good amount and get sub par performance. Although the game is playable and it is beautiful. I see I'm not the only one getting low performance on a mid-high spec machine so I don't feel totally isolated. No matter what settings I choose I get the same performance. I have tried many different settings in my video card control center and the game itself and the performance varies by only a few fps 5-8 fps probably on average even from the very lowest possible settings to the highest. I have read and tried many of the different suggestions and stickies without any success. I wouldent mind playing at lower graphic settings but even the lowest settings gives the same performance as the highest settings. Disabling the hud gives a significant performance increase but playing without the hud isn't much of an option. It seams to be the only thing that really affects performance but I simply cant play without the hud.

I built this computer myself so I know how to take care of it such as defragging and updating drivers for everything and bios and such. Everything is up to date drivers, bios everything. I even like to play around with http://www.tweakguides.com/ and get into the nuts and bolts of truly tweaking your programs and bios and OS. I have done a clean boot for gaming to make sure nothing is running in the background to interfere with the game. Even with the clean boot with the bare minimum programs/drivers running needed to play the game I still get the same performance problems low frame rate and stuttering performance.

You can check out how to do a clean boot here.

Although I am not getting stellar performance I am still happy with the game just not as happy if my performance would have been better. I would have been much much less happy if my joystick didnt work or if I was experiencing ctd or lockups. Probbly the best way to describe my feelings is disappointment although I can play.

I have a question for the devs or for people in general on this board.

With a higher then min req spec machine in good up to date running condition should I be getting better performance than I am currently getting? I mean truly should the game be running smoother for me and other people with performance issues who have higher spec comps? 3.2P4E 1GB PC3200 X800XTPE

I think overall this is a good message board and the frequency of posting form the devs shows there commitment to makeing the game smoother and better for everyone. I really hope 1.3 solves some of the problems I have with my game. Take your time Egosoft dont rush it. :D

I would just like a mod or dev to tell me I should be getting better performance. I believe I have tried nearly every possible thing to improve my performance. I really hope patch 1.3 helps me if not I don't know if I can continue playing with average 15-20 fps and enjoy myself.

You should be getting better performance. I'm pretty hopeful that 1.3 will help with the HUD problem, which will improve things for you somewhat. Whether other performance improvements will come from game changes or other adjustments to your system remains to be seen.

One area I would concentrate on in your position, while waiting for 1.3, is your sound subsystem. Try disabling it completely and see if performance improves. If it does then you know that you need to look at this area. Similarly, try removing any peripheral input devices such as joysticks and see if that has any effect. These are not solutions, just tests to see where the problem might be.

Thank you CBJ you have renewed my hope in my quest to get X3 to run well on my computer. I will try your suggestion and disable my sound system while using bengoin's ideas in this thread.

I will also do this --->

It is disabling everything and leaving only the minimum to run the game. That is windows bare with video and sound only. But this time ill disable sound completely.

I am going to continue working on trying ideas for better performance I wont give up.

I disabled everything including sound I had nothing except for the bare essentials for windows to run and video using the methods above. I get the same performance very low fps. It seams the only thing that ever made a significant difference is disabling the hud and I cant quite play the game with the hud disabled.

Its so frustrating to see someone with a 3.0mhz or less processor and a 128meg 9800 or 5900 get good performance when I cant even break 30fps and I average 15ish. I have disabled everything except the bare minimum for windows and video and I still get the same crappy performance.

I believe the performance issue is probably based in the program itself and I hope and pray 1.3 will fix this problem. I am just feeling very frustrated and angry right now.
