Betrayed!

Post by dcovell »

X3 Reunion.

Waited ages.. got my copy on the day of release.
Removed X2
Defragged.
Downloaded the patch to 1.2
Booted it up and got ready to be taken away from my stressful life.

The new menu system is fiddlier and takes more time.
What is the strange black rectangle in the center?

The planets, though pretty, do nothing but hog proccessing time. They simply do not add to the gameplay at all. Stupid, Stupid Idea.

I can't browse the ships when I look at them in the shipyard. When I highlight one, I should be able to see a 3D representation of the ship and be given some idea of what it's good for.
All I get in the little window top-top right is a big question mark "?" So I have to check out all of the ship specs to check wether it's a fighter or a cargo ship etc. Boooooring!

I can't see inside the stations any more. That was a nice touch. Pretty without taking up needed processing power.

I passed the training bit and was congratulated despite not firing a shot. At the time I was trying to find a fire button on my joypad. I had to reprogram all the buttons to do things that made sense.

I got warned that I was entering atmosphere when I was going through a gate.

I worked and saved and had a go at making a complex factory.
A few wheat farms, a beef farm, a cahoona factory and a factory that uses a mixture of the above.. I forget what it's called right now.
I bought a big tanker to get Power Cells and set it all going.
I seemed to be working.
I set the selling prices to average and waited.. and waited.. and pressed "j" and waited for half an hour or so more... but no NPC's came to buy.
I offered a good price for Power Cells too and no one came to sell them to me.

I told my Tanker to go get more calls and it smashed itself to pieces trying to "undock"

My Universe-Trader works well apart from using his Drones in an attack and escaping to another sector while I was shooting his attacker. The drones followed him. But he ignored them and left them all behind to eventually self-destruct.

The HUD.. Why does EVERYTHING out there have to have it's own little box? It hogs processing power and doesn't help at all. ALL you need to stand out on the screen is the station you have targeted, any enemies that show up and your sights. Anything else is clearly visible on your scanner. Way overcomplicated to no gain.

If you use a complex station gizmo on two stations, why don't you have the stations placed together nice and neat with a reasonably short connection once the connection is made? That kind of automation would at least make sense. My first attempt could have been entered for the Turner Prize. So I reloaded and tried again. I got it pretty good the second time round but it is way too much hard work just to position a station.

My station cargo shuttles (the ones you buy to go buy stuff for your new station) Dutifully told me where they were heading. At least they tried to but the information is cut off and so I can only see part of the location name.

My Universal Trader doesn't even tell me that much. I know what he's buying but have no idea where from.

I can play DVD's fautlessly on my monitor. Why should the intro be so slow and choppy?

More than two enemies and the frame rate drops to a point where it becomes unplayable. Too much pretty on the screen even at the lowest settings. Damn those planets. It's a space trading/fighting game. Not a gallery for budding artists. Please simplify it and make the game more playable. Mine isn't a low end machine.

Lastly, If I went to my tailor and he suggested I wear my jacket without the sleeves because they were not finished yet, I'd give HIM a belt around the back.
Are you so eager to get your hands on my money that you would have me buy a game from you that is NO WHERE NEAR finished?

I'm going back to Rome Total War until the general concensus is that the game is worth playing.

Why do you think an unfinished game with more bugs than features is somehow idiot proof. Quite the contrary.

Unless, of course, you mean that buying this game is proof we are idiots. In which case I agree.

DZorro,
Perhaps the mods should merge all this crap into one 'I hate this game' thread for people to cry and scream and spew angst in.

Yeah, work great for me too after I put that extra gig of RAM in. Any problems we have now will be ironed out later and the game community will cause it to be even better with their contributions, same as with X2.

He does make some points, and describes certain bugs/things that are messed up, and most of them have already been yapped about 20 times over.....

I still wonder why people come in here, carry on about how the game is unfinished blah blah, this happened blah blah, it sucks blah blah, I'm never coming back blah blah.......it adds NOTHING constructive at all.

If the forums are read before a vent is posted, they will see that what they experience, is what everyone (almost :D ) experiences. I mean for the love of all that is holy......

Good bye for now dcovell, we'll see you again I'm sure though. Check back again when 1.3 is out...........

I can. I haven't seen ANY glitches. But I have seen at least one small bug and some unfinnished ships.
Spoiler
Show
So far the only unfinnished ships are the Argon Discoverer which does not have a cockpit position and thus the weapons do not work.(You'll have to be a X2 ship model modder to know that) If you find the "Starbrust" ship in the plot, it has the Argon M5 model (so says tShips file, it doesn't lie). So it looks like they set the Disco's model to the Argon Buster and release it. I really hope it gets finnished in 1.3, maybe thats why 1.3 is coming so soon?

And also the Teledi Osprey model is no where to be found.

I buy lots of games, I'm quite used to aspects not beong spot on when a game comes out.

The last game I bought this unplayable on release was not that long ago (Stronghhold 2)

Ok unplayable is a strong word, both games were at a state where most could install them ,and actually perform some activities in them related to th e game.

But that's not the point. The "tailor" analogy is very fair. The game isn't fiished , it lacks important stuff.

Egosoft mods got arsey with me 2 years ago when I complained about scripting not being active in X2 on release.

I was told in no uncertain terms that discussions about "breach of conract" - and "false advertising" would get me the boot...so I desisted.

On looking closer I found that only the "self repairable hulls" was actually on the box, the rest was hidden in people's pre-release comments, or previews. Egosoft had "plausible deniability" I suppose.

Did that make me feel any better ?....no

Did i still feel cheated?.... Most definately !

I've heard that whiners like me will spell the end for the PC as a games development platform.

Well, if games continue to be "over advertised on features" (A polite way of saying something else) Then the PC games industry deserves to fail.

I work in industry - I have worked in various manufacturing management roles for nearly 20 years. Production Manager / Project Leader / Production PLanner etc etc.

I can say honestly that I have never heard of another industry where this is tolerated to such a massive extent by the paying public.

Yes patches can add features...But lets get the game running with features as errm "advertised" on systems that don't require the processing power of Deep Blue's older cleverer brother before we waste time adding content.

... I think they spell the end for poor games developers. If there's a profit opportunity in a market, simple economics means good developers will emerge. Good developers will be defined and exist only by providing their customers with satisfaction.
