Congratulations Egosoft ! - X3 returned for refund

Post by Disgruntled »

Congratulations !

In twenty years of playing computer games I have never had to return one to the shop for a refund due to it being non-functional......until now.

X3 is the first game I have had to do this with.

From the days of hand-crafting memory configuration boot disks for DOS I have always managed to get some response from a game eventually.

X3 failed to run on my machine although it is within stated spec.

I patched and updated everything and followed every lead in this forum but nothing improved matters.

I got the apparently common crash at start every time.

I now have my money back and will be sure not to spend any more on any future Egosoft or Deepsilver related, potentially non-functional products.

Sorry to hear that. If you had posted your problems and details of your system then we might have been able to help, but you didn't so we couldn't.

Keep an eye on this site after 1.3 patch is released and check peoples response's. X3 is a stunning game with lots of potental ,you may at a later date want to reconsider.

The be-all and end-all of it is this..

It is supposed to be an entertainment product.

...Didn't get any.

If I, as a Network Systems Manager, can't run it straight from the box then it has problems.

Just swapped it for F.E.A.R.

I bet that works from the box. Wanna take the bet? No?

As lukethegordie says, I might reconsider. After 18 months when it is discounted to a fiver !

I take my hat off to those willing to struggle on.

I was waiting for this game for over a year. So dissapointed :(

Situations like this are why the PC is finished as a games platform.

I'm sad to say I have to agree... I've been looking forward to this game very much, a lot because of all the eye candy that has been shown in screenshots. But I feel eye-candy is all I got (if I ever buy a $500 graphics card) because the game-play is so non-appealing, thrown into the deep ... and the manual is even worse.

Couldn't they have written the manual chronologically instead of trying to load as much detail as possible into my head without even touching the basics? It was completely unable to get me on my way and I'm really not a moron.

Maybe a good tutorial would have encouraged me to try again, but now I just don't think it's any fun at all.

i'm sorry for Disgruntled...

maybe he will give x3 a second chance :)

of course x3 needs a special care in the starting time- but most of the people here get it running, and i'm sure it will be stable on most pc soon.

come back soon - take and give somne patience ;)

*shrug* just got my copy this morn, been testing it out on my main machine as well as my wifes machine.

Her machine has Athlon XP 1800+ and a nVidia 5900 FX and runs fine even maxed settings, (has some lag here and there, but not anything making it unplayable)

So, im going to get her a copy as well since it runs on her system with no probs.

And of course, it runs great on my own rig as well But that was expected given mine is a powehouse. Main concern was the wifes, but all is well. Sorry to hear you had trouble or dislike the game.

I've got mixed views so far.

Yes it's a great game..I lost so much of my life to X2 and X3 builds on this..it's the same (familiar) but different. The graphics are the obvious change but it does go deeper and i particularly like the inertia.

I was sceptical about my own rig.. Athlon 1700XP, 512Mb RAM and an ageing but faithful Geforce 3 Ti 200. It works but does get chuggy. I wasn't surprised but was a little disappointed with the performance on our other machine..P4 3.0HT 512Mb RAM (will upgrade soon) and recently bought 6600GT card.

My main bug bear is Seizewell and Argon Prime. These sectors take an age to load up and if I have saved in one and load that savegame when starting up it takes over 5 minutes (I'm not kidding..I've timed it).

However, I look on these as times to reflect, relax and have a drink.

Has this game lived up to my expectations?..yes.
Do I hope future patches and upgrade improve performance?.. of course.

But I shall continue to enjoy playing this game in the meantime.

Oh that really cracked me up :) Thanks for the humour.
If I, as a Network Systems Manager, can't run it straight from the box then it has problems.
The fact that you are a Network Systems Manager suggests you are more likely to edit the core functional aspects of your operating system, so I'd expect to run straight out of the box less often that someone who never touches their stock Dell PC.

PC’s aren’t gaming platforms, they are designed to do a HELL of a lot more then just play games, which is why there are so many different components for them, and all of them different components have to be accounted for when programming a game or a bit of software which is why they are bugs. But software for computers can be patched and fixed and updated and made better then the original, that can’t happen with consol game, and even with all the extra work that has to go into PC games they are still up to half the price of consol games.

So I don’t see how people can complain when in the end they get something better then the original for less then the original costs on something like a Playstation.

Oh no it needed a patch. Works perfect for me after the 1.2 patch albeit with somewhat laggy performance in argon prime.

You should have said something sooner. Next time you should make sure to note that DVD's don't work in the CD player.

No charge.

I'll almost guarantee your PC is just badly configured and not very well maintained. Plus the sad thing is you will really think you know what you are doing ...but don't. hey ho. sad but true.

This is the only downside of games development for PCs - you can't guarantee the state of the PC your game is going to get played on and its people like above that start to send out bad messages. It's funny though, the guy above will be one of only a few. Otherwise everyone would have had a refund by now...

BTW. Don't bother replying to me because as much as your not convinced that there is anything wrong with your PC, I'm not convinced by anything you say in reply.
:(

X3 isnt the great sequel we were all hoping for. They were given nowhere near enough time to come up with a polished product and it shows. I guess they did what they could in the small amount of time they were given.

I've played it half heartedly for a couple of days but its just too similar to X2 to keep me playing for long I think. It crashes quite often too which is a disincentive. Given a few patches the game may be much better. As it stands though its X2.5 (beta).
