NEWS: New Interview on Gamecloud

Post by jjoyce »

New interview ( dated 30/9 anyway ) and can't see any reference to it on here

http://www.gamecloud.com/article.php?article_id=1693

It's by Greg Kingston and although probably not much new it's something to read while waiting !

Good read although I'm a bit curious about the "earth-shattering" finale. ;)

This may sound like an incredably stupid question......

but what does NPC mean ?

I cant say I like the sound of the ship specialization. I havent come accross a game with that in it that I liked yet. Have to wait and see I guess.

But all else sounds good.

But I think most people who played X2 up to magnate/AoA1 levels are in for one hell of a shock going back to post X2 main game state. (Broke and with a damaged Nova I assume).

NPC = "Non-player Character", i.e. all the zombies. 8)

And, some of us re-start the game because being a Zillionare is too much like work. :P

I like this interview alot and heres why... :)

Engine and rudder tuning as well as power generator upgrades will be available for all ships. The new weapons are particularly exciting, with many new types of lasers and some really innovative new missiles as well. Flak cannons, disruptor lasers, synaptic, cluster, multi-targetting missles, dumb-fire rockets and many many more. The way that NPC ships use all these weapons is greatly changed and will provide a far more challenging combat experience – they will use them and switch to different combinations. This in turn will force the player to think about their own multiple weapon loadouts prior to engaging in combat – there certainly isn’t a “own all” weapon in X3.

Power generator upgrades, finally, woohoo. :)

Also cool info about weapons, especially looking forward to see if flak cannon is like the one in homeworld 2 as i thought it was mint :)

NPC traders are probably UT traders not owned by the player. I hope they have JD too...
random (yet reactive) rather than scripted global and localised universe events
Nice. But some things are more random than others. Or 'sudden and unexpected' as the insurance terms call them ;) Somehow, the "Game of Life" came to my mind as a basis for gradual changes of the political map, with player actions naturally bending the normal rules. But that would be a scripted approach.
in many cases the outcome of these missions can dynamically affect the sector of the universe
Isn't that what people are already doing with the Xenon Taxi missions
Or of course, you can do all elements together or move seamlessly out of one into another.
To gather a band of bullies and rob a sector and then wear a police badge, kill the mates, be model citizen and keep the loot :? Good guys can always turn to crooks, but the other direction should not be too easy. Good guys punish criminals and become heros, but crooks kill other crooks just to stay in character. That is the standard plot: bad guy kills to show how deliciously evil he is, the good guy is witless pacifist, the bad attempts to kill the good, and in finale the good guy finally kills the bad. Anyway, mending atrocities by slaughtering innocent pirates is more than dubious. It sounds though that the race ranks will have more impact.

As for power generator, depends what it is used for. Fusion injection in each crystal buyer would be nice.

Greg Kingston - Firstly as is clear from the visuals, all the ships have been completely re-designed and re-modelled. Not only now will there be different ship classes (i.e. M3 is a heavy fighter) there will be different formats of these ships as well, i.e. interceptor, freighter, or sentinel, each tuned to a specific purpose. ---------To add spice, not all of these different models and types will be available to purchase – indeed some will be few and far between so if the player wants one, they will have to.. erm.. appropriate one!-----------
Can you still buy destroyers and carriers? because i want all of these different models and types of ships
I diserve them cuz i was very good santa  :D

It would be possible, you'd just have to leave one of the races alone instead of just pirating everyone. ie: act as a privateer.

Which is exactly why the player shouldn't be forced to take this route - it is a cliche. Some races might tend more towards the peaceful type of law enforcement, but if you want to shoot ships and take names, races like the Split should be more than happy to point you towards suitable targets.

It is annoying that they haven't mentioned any interesting ships yet. By "interesting", I mean ships with features I couldn't easily add in myself (like tugs and fab ships).

Great pics! :D

Best Quote of this interview:
One of the other bigger changes players will see immediately are the new multi-functional factories – rather than have 8 different types of factory manufacturing and selling 8 different types of missile for example, there will now be a missile superstore so to speak, manufacturing and selling many types at once. This will also be the case for other goods as well.

Good. Looks like some of my suggestions in the Dev forums are making their way into the game.

Multiple types for each class of ship. Finally!

Power upgrades!

I'm trying not to overhype this in my head...

Hopefully they've actually made Tunings actually mean something too. There were zero ships in X2 where you bought 3 out of 12 engine tunings. Everything was too slow (except the pegasus, but speed was the only real reason to buy one of those).

I posted this in another thread, but maybe this would be a better place for it:

Errr.....I'm probably just getting my hopes up, but in reading that last interview, I noticed this:

The player is led through planetside chases through skyscrapers,

Did anyone else catch that? Is this a hint with regards to being able to fly around on planets, or just a storyline-specific thing?

I'm already drooling with anticipation about X3, the ability to be able to fly around on planets.....well, I'd probably wet myself....
