The best defended Fedhelm ever or what?
For a while now i was not able to board anything after a Balor and the plot Taranis, im also unable to find any Veteran and Elite Marines to buy, only the recruit shows up on the trade screen.
So today i tried to board a Fedhelm with 44 Recruits and 6 Veterans, with a Officer that has 5 Leadership, 4 Boarding and 3 Morale, always fails. I cant figure out what is going on.

Boarding mechanic changed in 3.0
Here's what I've pieced together...
* you can only buy recruit marines now -- the ones that don't die during boarding up level up if the boarding op is successful
* you need to reduce a ships 'boarding resistance' to succeed -- new metric 'boarding resistance' can be found in a ship's details

The new boarding mechanic gives ships a "Boarding Resistance" value, that is affected by things like, active turrets, shields, ship hull, and drones in the drone bay. Your marines are given a "Boarding Strength" (which is never shown to you so you have to guess) that is based on the marine officer and what level the various marines you have are.
Right now the current mechanic takes all drones into account, which means that they MASSIVELY inflate the boarding resistance value. Your problem with the Fedhelm is that it probably has anywhere between 40-60 drones on board. If you destroy that drone bay (which destroys all those drones), and take the hull down to below 50% or so, you should capture it easily.

Yeah, I prefer it when it was easier... but tbh it was a bit too easy before. But I think they may have gone a bit too far in the other direction now. It's almost impossible to board any decent destroyers now without a capital ship to assist you in damaging its hull.LTerSlash wrote:Yeah i damaged the crap out of it now, destroyed everything and reduced to 30% hull... Also, think about it, if say, some pirates tried to board a U.S. destroyer, do you think 50 odd rag tag pirates would be able to take out an entire ship full of militarily trained officers and crew? Combat ships should be very difficult to capture until at least you have a crack team of 50 elite marines, and even then it should still be somewhat of a challange. Everyone just got used to the basically 1 click board and win game mechanics we had with boarding up until now. I do agree that some adjustments/balancing need to be made, but the mechanic behind boarding now is pretty good I think.Sparky Sparkycorp wrote:I don't see why this is a bad thing. It would be better if the Defence Officer or even a Marine Officer had 50/50 Slot capacity and placing that Marine Officer on your Ship gives it a resistance buff.
Like an Engineer can carry/use 50 Welder Drones.
Marine Officers should be used as hired muscle on ships to protect from Piracy which I hope Egosoft will introduce in a future release.
Freighters will have a mixture of 5-30 ragtag rookie Marines (Maybe even a chance to level up if they get boarded by Pirates)
While Destroyers have 40-50 mix of Rookies, Vets and Elites.
They should also be able to wear down the crew, if you fail the first time they should be weakened by having several losses.
Rather than reset, more Marines thrown at it the weaker they get, until they break and you take the ship.

I complained a lot about new boarding mechanics (especially on need to destroy the drone hangar - that large $$$ piniata). I failed like 3 times trying to board mining ship - this was like large WTF?!
However once you reaad the rules of boarding, like here:

it becomes quite logical (still the dronse need to be more ballanced in next patch).
The key is to destroy the drone bay and then do 50% or 70% to the hull.
If you have low tier marines and Marine officer then I sugges destroying every surface module and 80% of the hull.
