X3TC (Steam) Freeze. Was working fine, no changes. - Possibly fixed by chkdsk repair.

Post by adriaans »

Version: Up to date Steam download
Steam verified cache.
Language: English
Game start: Humble Merchant

Issue: I have been playing fine the last 2 days since starting the game, however as of today it has started freezing/locking up (requiring a ctrl + alt + delete to get out of), so far only after having docked in a station. (NOTE: Not every time, only on random occurrences it seems). *Edit: Crash only occurs AFTER the save when trying to do something in the station*

Would greatly appreciate help in solving this issue!

System specs:
Nvidia GTX 670
16GB RAM
Intel 3570K
Windows 7 64 bit.

Reading the sticky I went to look for any files referencing ffdshow etc, didn't find any, but I do have media player classic.

Hello. I cannot see anything wrong in the DxDiag although you can probably get a newer Win7 x64 HD Audio Driver from the RealTek site (that is not your issue though).

Make sure your verify was recent (ie since the issues happened).
Any 3rd Party mods or scripts?

Things to try:
1. Start the game in XP SP 3 compatibility mode.
2. Try windowed mode rather than fullscreen.

Things to look out for:
1. Stop the orders for any traders you have on manual trade run.
2. Look for any NPC TLs with station kits onboard acting strangely (wandering/idling) IS.
3. As for 2 but for NPC Military capital ships IS.

Hardware:
1. Check system temperatures and voltages while in-game.
2. See what your RAM usage is in-game, especially after playing a while.

See if any improvement or clues pop up from those. Good luck.

Hardware temps:

GPU: 25-27
CPU: 30-35 (varies on core and whats happening in the game)
RAM use: never seen it above 2.5GB.
Voltages are normal.

Will look out for that, not seen something like that so far though. Out of curiosity, should I find something like that, how does one 'fix' it and how is it caused? (Well I've seen a collossus that might be patrolling, but I assume what you mentioned is noticeable different behavior to everything else).

I have no traders operating other than my personal space craft currently. I have a few ships being remotely managed with commands for fly to X/Y etc as a form of mobile satellites since there are none for sale.

Will try Win XP S3 and windowed mode if it crashes again. (Trying admin mode atm).

File verification was about 2-3 hours ago, so pretty recent :)

The issue with NPC TLs (and maybe military capitals) was that they could somehow get conflicting equal priority scripts applying to them (eg Fly to & drop station at/attack, etc) and get stuck in a loop as a result. Manual traders can sometimes arrive at a set of trade circumstances that their scripts did not foresee and so go into meltdown. There are workarounds and ways to avoid/escape.

Unfortunately with a lock-up freeze, we don't get any useful error messages to help identify what is going wrong. If the problem continues, would you be prepared to delete the X3TC local content and virtual store X3TC folder before redownloading the gamefiles to eliminate installation as a factor? (The verify is not always 100% reliable unfortunately.)

Be aware that an in-game issue can be stored in the gamesaves making those affected immune to any remedial changes made to the gamefiles later on and so possibly useless for further play. You might have to try an earlier save to see if the issue can be avoided in future.

Assuming none of the possible solutions work then I have no issue re downloading (Takes less than 10 mins anyway).

Would starting a new save be involved in that?

edit: just checked the virtual store folder, nothing there regarding X3, just some microsoft files.

I have crashdumps associated with the freeze btw if they could be of any use? I have no software that can read them so can't check what they actually contain.

Located in: appdata - local - crashdumps.

I am assuming they are the microsoft ones, but asking anyways ;P

No need for crash dumps, just use Windows Event Viewer.

Type EVENTVWR into a RUN command and expand CUSTOM VIEWS. Select ADMINISTRATIVE EVENTS and wait for the log to load.

Look for events in red that tie into the times of crashes.

We're expecting to see X3TC.EXE as the faulting module (if the process is actually crashing). However, this may highlight a different module crashing and cascading to bring X3 down with it.

If you need advice on any related info in Event Viewer, you can copy/paste the text.

Let us know how you get on.

PS - Are you using any Endpoint Security (AV) products? If so, you may have a new definition which is taking a dislike to a X3 script or a save. You may want to consider adding scanning or access protection exceptions for the X3 installation folders and the save folder (%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Egosoft).

Yes it helps. We see ntdll.dll errors when there is an issue starting and stopping applications and would affect launching or closing the game or a supporting driver or service for example. The second is more worrying as an 'unknown' faulting module and path points at application or OS corruption.

I would do a clean game reinstall to eliminate the game installation as the culprit. If the problem survives then we need to look at your system and OS.

I couldn't see where the dependency lay with ntdll.dll and x3 processes. I was going to research it a bit further tonight, but you've saved me the bother Alan.

As it's a core dll, I would be tempted to run a system file check in Windows.

Goto a RUN command and type SFC.EXE /SCANNOW

Have the OS installtion disk handy incase it's needed during the scan.

If I recall, you have to call the MSDOS Command Prompt using 'Run as admin' before typing 'sfc /scannow' otherwise it may not always run or do any repairs if it finds issues.

Frankly, I'm hoping the game reinstall will fix it as OS corruption would probably appear in application use elsewhere and not just in X3.

I did a reinstall of X3, verified my OS drive - no errors.

Freeze happened again, the unknown one, however this time with the exact same timestamp this error was present too:

Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program X3TC because of this error.

Program: X3TC
File:

The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
User Action
1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
- It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
- It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

Additional Data
Error value: 00000000
Disk type: 0

So I did a disk check on my 2nd drive which is where my games are on (I like to point out this issue doesn't happen in my other games for some reason). (Also, more strangely, only after having docked, game autosaved, then ONLY when I try to do something, and only every now and then).
It said something about bla bla fixed bla bla (went away way to fast for me to catch it exactly).

I haven't had time to test over a longer play period yet (which seems to be the only time I have gotten the issue so far, but might just be coincidence) so I don't know if the issue will persist, hopefully not.

After a reinstall, did you also reinstall the BP if previously installed? Have you cleared the Virtual Store of any old X3TC folder from the previous installation?

You say you verified the OS drive - but did you do a Steam verify gamefiles cache for X3TC after the reinstall? Are your gamefiles still where Steam reinstalled them and expects them to be for verification?

If everything checks out above then try running 'sfc /scannow' in the MSDOS Prompt using run as admin.

Cleared the virtual store yes. BP not sure what means, sorry.

Yes, steam verified right after install. Same location yes.

BP = Latest X3TC Bonus Pack from Egosoft downloads.

Missed my previous late edit: 'If everything checks out above then try running 'sfc /scannow' in the MSDOS Prompt using run as admin.'

I'm a touch confused by your last comment as scannow checks the OS files and not your drives - or do you have more than one OS? Anyway it sounds as if the OS is all clear.

Has anything improved since the chkdsk repair?

Ah, my bad

Been fine so far, but I've only been playing for 1-2 hours. (It could take many hours or simply 30 mins before). Hopefully it remains fine.

Can you confirm whether you had issues in XP SP3 compat mode or in windowed mode yet?
