Rebirth VR Headset and Head Tracking Support
Since Albion Prelude supports head tracking, will Rebirth?
I personally have not ever used any kind of head tracking, or virtual reality goggles any time in my life. BUT it is something I would like to do when the technology is good enough to actually enhance the game.
It seems like this Kickstarter is getting a lot of attention, Oculus Rift
I can't personally vouch for it but it's getting a lot of hype and looks good so far.
I have always wanted one of those 3:9 monitors to play X games on, but I think a headset would be a lot cheaper and more suitable for games.

Headtracking/Track IR is actually incredibly simple to do. I made a track ir headset with a baseball cap, 3 LED pens and a 5 dollar webcam (and ductape
)... using freetrack software. I made it for arma2 and it worked perfectly.
Point is, it's really not a complicated tech so i highly expect it will be possible with rebirth.
In fact, if rebirth has a seperate control for moving your view and not a ship (for joystick hat's etc) then it will be possible even without official support, I think.

He's not trolling you. I made head-tracker from a Playstation 3 Eye and three IR leds on a baseball cap too. Worked fine.
Then I went out and bought a proper TrackIR5, and it's awesome.
Which brings me to X3AP's support for head tracking. In its current configuration (if someone knows how to fix this, tell me!) it's pretty useless. When you move your head, the crosshair for boresight shooting moves with your head, but the actual aimpoint that your cannons shoot remains boresighted along the ship.
End result? The crosshair is useless and you can't aim properly using the ship as an aimpoint. Very disappointing.
Anyone know how to fix, or if this will be fixed in Rebirth?

From a practical PoV, you can't see the keyboard and other controls while wearing the headset. Unless Rebirth's controls are greatly simplified to the point of a first person shooter being able to see the keyboard will be a must.rrfarmer wrote:I was really wanting the screen in the glasses. I personally don't care about the head tracking, I just want 3 screens side by side with no edges, and the thing I linked seemed to have that taken care of with the glasses.

Oculus Rift Support
Is Oculus Rift support planned for ReBirth? It's incredibly well suited to the X Universe. Doesn't seem to need a vast amount of tweaking, and pledging support alone seems to generate publicity;

I actually saw this before posting, this is a Head Tracking thread?
The Rift is an immersive VR product, quite different to products such as TrackIR.
Note that X already supports head tracking, whereas Rift support is something entirely different hence the original thread/question.
<Read rrfarmer's (original OP's) post 6 up. I have fixed the thread title for you both. Alan Phipps>
Edit: Thanks!

I doubt Egosoft will be able to announce support for Oculus in the near future because the dev kits are simply not out in the wild yet.
I imagine many developers getting a kit in december and then test it out and maybe try to integrate it into their existing game to see how well it would work.
I certainly hope Oculus Rift will be supported but it's just too early to ask this question. Sure big companies have had the chance to try it out but since only 2 (or 3) working prototypes exist, Egosoft is surely not on their list for a demonstration.
I'm awaiting my dev kit this december too and will certainly test every game that will support it
(Amnesia!...I wish)
