Can you turn off vertical sync in x3 albion prelude?

Ask here if you experience technical problems with X³: Terran Conflict, X³: Albion Prelude or X³: Farnham's Legacy.

Can you turn off vertical sync in x3 albion prelude?

Post by Gothic Ghost »

Hi all.

I cannot seem to find the option to disable vertical sync on the graphics options before the game loads or ingame unless I missed it lol.

Thanks for any help.

Dam it I posted in the wrong place :(

Moved over for you. To answer the question, you set it in the driver not the game.

Thank you for moving the topic and answering my question :)

I using 5870 + ati 11.12 drivers.

Thanks.

I'm no expert on this but here goes: games have a default setting for vsync. Video adapters have a default setting. I believe that the default setting in TC was off but was changed in AP to enabled. If you changed the default setting on video adapter that doesnt necessarily change what happens in particular games. On mine at least (nVidia) there's a seperate thing in the video adapter properties where you can set individually for each game. Disable that one and it won't matter what the game wants, vSync will be forced off.

For me as well (not that I like playing with no vsync) the option in catalyst control center does not change what happens in game.

Forced off is still on in X3AP. Some other games are the same.

Similarly forced on is still off for X3TC, so the problem was there for TC as well just the other way around. Obviously the devs do not use ATI cards or they know of a secret option I don't know about.

Some other games do the same thing I just end up using a tool called D3DOverrider to fix it. But this does not fix X3AP either, setting forced off for X3AP.exe and forced off in CCC does nothing for this game.

This is on Catalyst 11.12 on a HD5770XT. Not that I care, I like vsync :)

Cheers.

Reading the replies to this reminded me of something that had slipped my mind. We didn't change VSync directly in X3AP but we did enable a setting to limit the framerate to the monitor refresh rate, because very high framerates were causing some graphics cards we were testing with to overheat if we didn't!

I can also confirm that forcing vsync off in AMD drivers has no effect on AP - still capped at 60. I was looking for a way to turn it off...perhaps an option in the launcher that is turned on by default? If someones GPU burns to the ground, then its the fault of the drivers and/or hardware, not the game. GPU has safeguards for that.

That being the case, it shouldn't matter what VSync is set to on gfx driver, yet it certainly does on my system. Never above 60 fps before, 1001fps seems to be the limit after disabling. I can see framerate limiting as something that could save some systems that are close to burning out already, but this is something that absolutely must be user adjustable.

There's a surprisingly high percentage of video cards out there that have at least one fan that no longer works. Cheap bearings, plus the fact that many "double wide" video cards actually take up slightly more than the width of two slots. Put 2x GTX-4?? cards two slots apart in a tower case and you may get to notice that one of the fans on the top card drops down slightly, touches a particular part of the next card and thus cannot turn. This is unnoticable if you keep GPU load low as there is a second fan that seems less prone to this. Some of the new LGA2011 motherboards have a slot configuration that seems to recognise this problem and when you use 2x vid cards, they are placed with several slots between them. These in between slots typically will hold thinner cards (sound, SSD).

Egosoft should probably use a frame limiter with default setting of 60 to 100 fps, but have this settable in the window on first running AP. Add a note about make sure your GPU stays within temp bounds at high framerates.

It's not just the limiter to refresh for me...

Even at the 11FPS my game currently gets I do not see any incomplete frames being sent to the display. Although this could be because the card is no longer doing much work and is always sending complete frames.

In any case even when starting a new game I still don't see any tearing when turning like you do in X3TC, I'm not just looking at the FPS here. I've played games with 30 and 60FPS caps still have tearing on screen I'm sure vsync is a completely separate option...

But still X3TC no matter what you do vsync is off.

Oh and talking about graphics cards overheating, I have had that with another card with only very few games.

It was a passively cooled card (fanless) so it had no excuse (ATI 4850XT Sapphire), I ended up putting a 12cm case fan attached to four massive screws and a piece of foam (from HDD packaging) and dangled it at the bottom of my case. That stayed at a cool 40C temp no matter what I did after that LOL (I just hate small fans because they break and make lots of noise).

My new passively cooled gigabyte card has no such problems thankfully although it is very heavy :/.
