Kerbal Space Program (in-dev retail game)

Post by esd »

Found this on Twitter, an indie space-game in the alpha-stage - currently free to download. It lets you assemble multi-stage rockets and then blast them into space.

No missions, and the functionality is pretty limited at the moment, but it's a lot of fun. I uploaded a vid on YouTube showing a launch, stage-separations, retro-grade burn and landing... plus a couple of flights that didn't go so well :D

Updated:
No longer free, but still in development. There's an old, free, build serving as the demo.

Hahaha, watch the little guys faces when things aren't going well.

Thanks, downloading now. Should give a few hours of fun.

Tutorial launch went like clockwork. (This is easy, I think to myself.) Second launch, not sooo wellll. Nobody died, but that wasn't for lack of trying. Watching the kerbals faces as there hurtling to their doom, makes this game. One of them was so traumatized after splashdown, he kept the appalled expression. I'll try to get them into space after work.

This looks like fun. Will have to try it when I get home (somehow I don't think it'll run on my Linux-only netbook...).

 This game is awesome.

I just made my first successful rocket. 4 stages, first was 6 solid rocket boosters, second was 3 liquid fuel engines, third was one liquid fuel engine, final was command module.

Went up ~450, 000m with a maximum of 65 g-force ( 8) ) and maximum speed ~2000m/s on descent. Took 17 minutes and landed successfully. Next time I'll put on another engine stage to get me back in a reasonable amount of time.

Other attempts were utter failures. Tried one with a first stage of 9 solid rocket boosters but it tore itself apart, another wasn't powerful enough and kind of went sideways.

Also, Kerbal expressions are awesome.
Allergic to work.

You know that moment when you build a new rocket, put it on the pad and hit launch...?

...yeah. That. :D

:o ...

How is it even possible to do that? You mess with the order the parts disconnect/activate in?

It's something to do with weight apparently, I had a similar problem.

My first go had difficulties like that too.

I mean, it went up a long way. And it came down ok with everyone alive and such. But we only went high atmosphere.

The bolts all blew at once and... yeah.

I just cracked the 500km mark, using only liquid rockets. The solid ones just burn out way too fast ...

Where did this evening go ???

For some reason the custom-staging-routine didn't work (it was meant to ignite and eject the attached boosters at altitude as separate drones), and rather than light and lift off, it lit and dropped the boosters at the same time...

My record is 6700 meters and that was by mistake since with the same rocket I can't achieve that again :|
