General Performance Inquery

Post by johgalt »

I have a general performance query for all of you seasoned X players. As my (2.6) game has gotten older, its performance has gradually deteriorated to the point that even when in a completely empty sector such as Unknown (4,16) my framerate averages between 13 and 20. However, if I start a new game and fly so a super busy sector like Seizewell, Neptune, or Empires Edge, I can hold a solid 60fps even with 32x anti-aliasing.

I have completed all plots. My game stats are listed below:

----------------------------------------------
Ships: 466
Stations: 345
Game time: 2m 0d 01:19:05
Player cash: 25,889,172 Cr
Total ship value: 2,472,719,054 Cr
Total station value: 4,775,555,232 Cr
Total station cash: 4,796,846,182 Cr
Total cash: 4,822,735,354 Cr
Total asset value: 7,248,274,286 Cr
----------------------------------------------

Only about 120 of those are actually ships, the rest are satellites. Also, the stations are HQ, Hub, and 7 complexes. No free-standing stations anywhere.

I'm certain that this is a processor limitation, because my average framerate went from 13 to 23 with a 20% overclock. My guess is that the number of AI controlled ships is much larger now than in a fresh game. My empire is rather modest, and I don't think that the extra overhead of the scripts for my ~50 trade ships should be enough for a -66% performance hit.

So, my question is: are there any game activities that are known to significantly affect performance one way or the other? I am interested in things I should do to improve performance (not mods or graphics settings, but in game activities), and activities I should not do to avoid a performance hit (are big complexes really bad and things like that...).

Thanks in advance.

are all the stations linked together?
what kinda ships are you using? what commands are they running?
do you have a satellite network in alot of sectors?
are you using non-BP mods?

There is a trade mission not correctly terminating that seems to be at least one of the factors in the 2.6 slowdown. Tech support forum has a few threads detailing things.

If by "linked" you mean to a complex hub, then yes.

Of the ~120 ships that are not satellites, the majority are docked at my HQ waiting to be reverse engineered, so they have no command at all. I have a few fighters docked at my Tokyo, and that is the ship I have spent the most time in. I have 5 M2s using "defend position" on some xenon gates. I have less than 40 Universe traders, mostly Minstrel Super Freighters, 7 CAGs (one per complex), 3 CLS2s loading 3 TLs with products from my 3 largest complexes. I have 2 Cobras with 20 marines each, all 5 stars including fighting. I have an Aran parked by HQ with a couple M6s docked. I think that covers it.
do you have a satellite network in alot of sectors?
Yes, ~360 satellites, no more than 3 per sector.
are you using non-BP mods?
Only 1. I use Complex Cleaner. Not by choice exactly, but by necessity. With the changes to memory management that came with 2.4 and 2.5, my game became completely unplayable in the sectors housing my complexes. By unplayable, I mean that the game would crash attempting to load the sector. I had to temporarily LAA patch the game, install the Complex Cleaner, use it to compress the complexes, and then deactivate LAA again for the game to be able to load those sectors again.

This sounds like an issue for the Tech Support forum, not the Spoilers Forum. As there are threads there already discussing this issue, I'll not ad to the clutter by moving this one. Instead I'm going to lock it and ask you to post in the Tech Support threads.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.
