Why does my mouse go slower when in game?

Slower, my mouse is much slower, pointer speed, when in game. It is at its worst when I am in the various menu screens prior to playing, such as options etc...

Any advice on how to speed this up, there is no obvious mouse sensitivity option in the controls that I can see?

Can you give us some information to work with? The information requested in the very first thread in the forum isn't requested just for fun; without it it's almost impossible to help. In your case, for example, it could be simply that your PC is struggling with the game and that's affecting the speed of the mouse pointer, but we don't know that unless we can see your [url=http://www.egosoft.com/support/faq/faq_answer_en.php?answer=610&version=8][b]DX[/b][b]D[/b]iag[/url] report.

The game plays, as you can imagine, very smoothly indeed, as do all my mmo's also. The mouse is a microsoft intellimouse optical utilizing their own software, it never moves any slower until I run X3 TC. Then the pointer speed slows down by around 20-30%, very annoying and frustrating when in game. I did wonder if I needed to buy a variable speed mouse but that seems a lot of expense for just getting normal mouse speed on just one game.

I've no reason to suppose it would fix your problem, but installing SP2 for Vista wouldn't go amiss, unless you have a particular reason not to.

I have my mouse speed set slightly faster than default in windows and I notice it being slightly slower in-game. I've always just put this down to the game having it's own setting. What kind of setting do you use normally?

Is it a USB mouse? Try removing any other USB devices while playing to see if it makes a difference.

If you have another mouse handy, or that you can beg, borrow, or steal, give that a try as well. PS/2 if possible.

I have ordered a mouse which has variable dpi which I can switch on the fly, in game, so hopefully that will do the trick.

Yes Eladan my current mouse is a USB but removing my keyboard and headset does not make any difference, other than I cannot run the game at all then.

Just as a footnote and while I await my new mouse, the actual problem can be better described like this...

When I move the mouse in game or at the various menu screens there is a tiny fractional delay before the pointer moves, really small but it is there, as if it cant keep up with my hand. Then when it does move it seems slower than my hand movement. It is almost as if the pointer is being pushed through some invisible field which slows it down and makes the "feel" of the whole game kind of slushy and not crisp at all.

I repeat, it "only" happens on X3 TC. Very strange indeed. Eve is fine, LOTRO, COH, SH4 and all the rest of my games are all fine, it also had this effect on X3 reunion and the original X3 also.

Ok done that. Running on max everything, alongside Argon Equip Dock keeping it in full view with the controller chat window open and him speaking the fps went down from 55 to 35, average around Argon Prime spinning around and weaving in and out of stations etc was about 50.

OK, not too fast then. There has been a problem that very high framerates disturb the coordination between X games and mouse input, and that forcing vsync in the GPU control would enable the mouse to move more smoothly. I suppose it might be worth a try for you, but I'm pretty sure it won't work.

Having eliminated that, I'm out of ideas. Anybody else?

If I enter mouse combat mode, then it is fine, but when i am using any menus etc, it moves much slower than in windows. Even happens if i switch to to windowed mode for some reason.

I use windows xp... and although it is still totally playable... it is kinda annoying...

I have tried many things... ( including buying a new mouse...) with no luck... so pretty much given up. I cant believe we are the only 2 people that have this problem...

A little bit of news that may or may not help. I seem to have got the mouse running a lot quicker now... although not perfect, it is much less noticable. Hopefully may help, but maybe just on my machine.

I noticed that if I speeded up my mouse in windows ( control panel ), the mouse got worse in X3 TC, so I decided to slow my mouse down in windows, and this helped a bit. Also one thing that has also helped a great deal is turning off "Enhance Pointer Precision" on Pointer options. Again this was done through Control panel mouse settings. I probably have improved mouse performance by about 80%... as I say not perfect, but alot better.

Sorry if this does not work for you, or is a red herring, but worth you having alook just in case.

Hi gdsvalentine, just browsing thread and saw your DXDiag. (By the way, your DXDiag is an awful format to read, suggest using the simple default Notepad format next time if ever.) Can't directly help on mouse problem but this may help.

You said this was a new PC yet you are using onboard sound with drivers that are 2 years old. RealTek have HDA drivers out dated Mar 09. You also seem to have a lot of sound devices all enabled in parallel - might be worth going into device manager and disabling what you don't use as it all adds to processing overhead. Now if your sound driver is outdated, what about mouse drivers? I cannot even see any non-default mouse drivers in the DXDiag (or I might have just missed them) If you have an even newer mouse, have you successfully downloaded the driver on the CD and checked for updates on this one (or even for the old mouse).

Worth a shot.

Thanks for the driver tip, I have indeed just updated my realtek hda.. latest version appears to be Nov 2008, well that is what the auto update found anyway so its now installed.

According to my device manager there is only one audio device functioning, realtek high definition audio, indeed the other two you mentioned are not even listed so I guess that means all is well there.

Ah mouse drivers eh?.. I definitely have the latest driver installed, I downloaded it myself from Microsoft so I am completely up to date there also. To be honest this issue of the slow mouse also occurred on my last pc with a totally different mouse.. I have even tried the top gaming mice now with variable dps but to no avail.

Once again thank you for your help, I posted the wrong dxdiag format I know.. doh! now I cannot edit it with the correct, text, one so nothing I can do about it now, sorry.

Maylen mate, I tried the slow pointer speed on the desktop, no joy, I also turned off precision, no joy there either. I am convinced it is a game issue, how else can the same fault occur on different pc's using different mice and different drivers and setups.. nothing else seems to make any sense. Will keep looking for the answer though.. cheers buddy.
