It looks like you're using beta graphics drivers. You could try updating them and see if that helps. Perhaps the overclocking is also having an adverse effect. It may be worth giving it a test at normal clock speeds.

Is the slow down happening as you press any key, or is it only if the ship is moving?

its only when i move, and the drivers run every other game i play fine, eve online, football manager 09, empire total war, crysis. And ive been using this cpu clock since basically the building of this rig which was about a year ago now. And its running at a very safe 1.136v's

just reinstalled and tried with the 1,4 patch. same problem. i accelerate and my game turns into a slide show

-update-

if i move slow the game goes fine, it seems as soon as i move fast enough that u get the star stretchin effect (where the dots seem to stretch past ur screen to show how fast ur moving) that the game craps itself

X:TC is very CPU intensive - much more so than just about every other game there is. Anything which loads the CPU can cause serious problems, and quite often beta graphics drivers haven't had their CPU use properly optimised. So, what Xenon-Slayer said still holds: X:TC may be the one game you play that needs the latest non-beta drivers available.

this game is nothing cpu intesnsity wise compared to empire tw which my system handles fine. but just to satisify the beta driver complaints (which r the recommended nvidia drivers atm) i used 182.50 which r the latest official release and the problem is no different

I don't know how you've arrived at that conclusion, but suffice it to say that it's very unlikely to be true. Please clock your CPU back to normal speed to see whether heat-related throttling is what is causing your problem.

 i apologize for the alcohol induced bitchyness last night but i know this is nothing heat related. I've already stress tested my gpu with furmark and stress tested my cpu with prime95, im using aftermarket cooling on the cpu and dont reach load temps above 50c on the cpu and 65c on the gpu. Ambient in the case is at 35c so i know my air flow is fine, my cpu is idleing at 37 with the gpu at 45c.

Ive tried playing windowed, playing on all low settings, downgrading my gpu drivers, playing vanilla, 1.4, and 2.0a. Tried compatibility on windows xp, run as administrator. Nothing worked, still can move slow 20m/s but as soon as i see one of the white dots start to stretch to simulate moving fast my game goes to hell and even when i slow down it doesnt recover.

Random Suggestion have you tried Defragging your hard-drive recently?
also not sure if its feasible, but try freeing up additonal hdd space see if that has any effect at all, also a another quick check would be when it starts turning into a slideshow, does the air output from the PSU increase in temp drastically, or does that stay the same? Just putting a hand near it before playing X3:TC and then again while the slideshow is happening would let you feel if there is a temperature increase.

PSU air remains the same, and i have 45gb free on my main hd right now and over 900gb free on my external (which ive tried with it both plugged and unplugged) so i dont think its hardware related.

Random thought, your not trying to run the game from the external hdd?

OK PSU air staying the same means its highly unlikely that the PSU is going under stress while the game is running.

ok is it the dvd or Steam version of the game?

are you using a flightstick or joypad? If yes try running it with that disconnected.

It might be worth updating the sound card drivers Realtek released several new drivers this year since January, i would also be tempted to look for new motherboard chipset drivers to see if that has any effect.

Unfortunately your on Vista and ive managed to avoid that so far, due to seeing how badly it went at launch, so i cant really offer any suggesstions there.

Have you tried lowering all the graphic details to low in the graphics settings just to see if that has any effect?

ok when the new card appears, download the newest drivers from creatives site, assuming its a creative model, uninstall the realtek HD audio drivers, rather than restart power off, install the new card, when you power on go straight into the bios and disable the onboard soundcard, then when you power up into windows install the drivers you downloaded.

Think this is the latest MB drivers for the P35 which is what i believe your machine has http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-026488.htm

select the P35 chipset drivers and that will ask for OS, also there is the intel Matrix Storage Manager, but that needs a supported I/O controller hub

Mayby nothing but your ram amount read 3.5gig.
This can either be because you are running 32bit or you have bad ram stick.

I don't think anybody has asked if you are running a virus scanner while playing. I doubt it has anything to do with that, but we're desperate so I'll suggest you turn off virus scanning - in case that is relevant.
