Confusing AI Behaviour

Post by Teebor »

Given several (lets call them) "accidents" after capturing a ship I've taken a more careful approach recently.

Then this weird tale happened. I found a Pirate Elite wandering on its own and I was bored so I attacked him, took down his shields and he bailed instantly. At the time I didn't care what the result was but a bail meant a couple more quid in the pocket.

The bail happened outside the shipping lanes and so there was nothing around.

So I hopped out of my ship and started repairing the abandoned Elite, checked sector map nothing closing on position, looks like a clean cap. Claim the ship, checked the friend/foe, all good. Jumped in my ship check sector map, all clear.

Sent the elite to the gate on the other side of the sector and started off in the opposite directions gate myself. Jumped sector and I then hear my unarmed poorly shielded Elite is being attacked. WTF?

check map and a Argon centaur and two other ships are attacking it. I re-enter the system and get within comms range and apologise, for what I don't know. But they stayed red, my elite went down as it was trying to run :(

I comm the ships again and all but the centaur go to blue. hmmm. I leave the sector and return, the centaur is now blue but one of the other ships is now red (I think it was a guardian or sentinel or something) so I comm him and apologise for him shooting my ship but he stays red. I fly right up his nose and he completely ignores me doesn't fire a shot and neither do his buddies.

So what was the deal?? Did they just not like my unarmed poorly shielded empty cargo hold elite that was on the other side of the sector to them as it once chatted up their bests mates girlfriend at the sector yearly dance?

@Longshanks, freight was empty, I check this now as I was once in a ship that had illegal goods in it. Not making that mistake again.

@TheJakal, I'm an Argon hero of the federation, my chosen in game career route required me to have the highest possible rankings I can get with every race.
Its annoying as hell but will pay off ultimately as they don't know I am secretly training a marine task force to start taking ships from them :) and any damage to my rep will be easily repaired afterwards.

So no, the Argon love me to pieces. Rightly so too as I have built almost half of their economic infrastructure for them now :)

Some times this happens. I have found that if I remember to re-send my global standings to all assets, ships in sector and such first then it seems to work. I guess that previous ship disposition towards them was still enemy or something. But this is just guess, that seems to work.

I had a similar incident, actually two such incidents, twice in a row. Both occurred in Hatikvah's Faith, both were captures that I had just made, both were empty of illegal goods, and both were attacked by different Split task forces 'just happening to pass through the area'. One capture was a Duke's Dangerous Materials TP and the other was a Pirate Nova Raider. And I was on great terms with the Split at the time. I'm thinking some NPC friend/foe flag wasn't being set for the Split once I took over possession of the ships. :?
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

I don't think it can be anything to do with friend/foe... once you claim a ship, it is a player ship. it doesn't retain any residual enmity from anyone. While it's possible for a single ship/object to be foe to an entire race, the reverse isn't true - it's not possible for a race to be foe to a single ship.

I'm wondering if perhaps the Split ships didn't lock onto those ships as targets prior to them being claimed, and it's simply that the target wasn't cleared when it changed ownership?

I've got this exact same problem with a ST, a Demeter in Boron sector Queen Space. Had to move him in the end. Kept getting attacked by boron patrols and messaging me saying the people there hated him.

So I think what you are saying is that the race could have locked on the ship prior to it being claimed but been a long way away and once it was claimed by the player the game engine didn't do anything other than carry out its last command.

Makes sense, there are other times when a similar action is carried out by the game.

It would have been so much simpler if I had sent it the other direction to a shipyard slightly further away in the direction I was going.

Hehe. Same thing (almost same) happened to me, only that I didn't claim the ship, I bought it (fair and square) because I had to deliver it to a person.
For some unknown reason the Terran Police (1 Raiper, 1 Sabre and 1 Katana) are red and keep shooting at me (I'm Planetary Senator at the Terrans). At first I thought I did something wrong, but now a Paranid Military Deimos is red also (Friend of Priest King), and the that ship nor the Terrans won't accept the "Sorry, my weapons were offline" talk.
I didn't do anything to the, I didn't accidentaly shoot any of their ships or anything.
It's quite frustrating, since I lost a Katana and some M5 because of them.

Teebor: I believe this is caused by a recon ship flagging the pirate fighter for termination. Before the forces of justice arrive, you intervene and capture it. But they won't fall for spoofed IDs! Kill the pirate, kill kill!

Vitez: are you SURE you don't ahve any illegal goods?
Irrational factors are clearly at work.

I have noticed this on two separate occasions now, Once in Rhonkars Clouds - I was in the process if repairing a captured Falcon when a Split Military Dragon turned red for no reason - I have also had a Centaur go Red for no apparent reason in Argon Prime - Both times I commed the ships to apologise for stray weapons fire - sucker turned Blue then immediately back to red -

What gives here - get red of a lot of bugs with the 1.3 patch, then up pops some interesting new ones!!

I know that Christmass is close and Santas watching so I was a reeeal goood boy and didn't do illegal stuff :D
+ I only use Terran ships in Terran sectors, and I don't capture them, I buy them. And I don't think the salesman would slip a roll of spaceweed under my cockpit

possible mission spawned reminents? IIRC the "return ship" spawns police ships if you fail to complete in time.

The same happened to me, and is still happening. I started as an assassin and after 2 hours I was getting the hang of it. I have good rep. in Argon space but not in the rest. But I took some missions and got better rep. with Boron. But even when I am Queens protector I still get red dots on there transporters, like I had in the start when they flew though Argon space. But now I have an option “sorry I shout at you” when I take that, then 2 min. later a new transporter and I can do it all the time. Even the same ships turn red.

It also happens in Argon space, the Centaur turns red and I try to calm it with the “sorry I shout at you” But it turns red soon after again! And do I have to mention I did not shoot at any of the ships and all is sat to friend!

Please fix this bug!

Thats very interesting thanks for that.

I've just realised that the area between Split fire and Hatikvahs faith in my game is a hotspot for race ships. I've seen sharks, tigers, deimos, and various others all passing through here at various points. So my new plan is now to park up in and around those sectors and obtain new ships.

Hopefully no more issues with this method as being in pirate space I am hopefully far enough away from any ships that might try to kill whatever I capture.
